Could it be? Are these the first signs of the spring thaw that will release the harbour from its winter blankets of ice and snow? Will the strengthening sun, offering its twelve hours of light now, be enough to offset the colder temperatures at night? Will the harbour soon break free again, released from its winter prison?
We pondered these questions as my husband and I walked along the shoreline this past week. Close to shore, there is open water in several areas now. Short days ago, the shoreline was frozen solid, exhibiting footprints of adventurous humans and animals, such as foxes.
Now only the fool hardy would attempt to traverse anywhere along this shoreline, as slush is obvious in places. It is a hopeful sign to us who have felt trapped for months, prisoners to the gray light and bitter cold.
We are waiting for the sun to release us now, sentence over for this year. Time to make plans for the days of light!
Besides, the geese are back!
Yay! Another winter is beginning to recede and leave us with the first signs of spring. And welcome back, geese. :-)
ReplyDeleteIt would be wonderful if it were spring but two snowfalls are in the forecast fro the rest of the week, Jan.
DeleteMost of our days now are slightly above 0 and our nights slightly below. This is good sap weather.

DeleteThat's an assuring sight Marie! Spring will be with you before you know it.. can you believe I am looking forward to winter, but you would mock what we call winter for sure ☺

DeleteI hope that winter is on its way out, time for warmer days me thinks!! Have a fab week Diane
ReplyDeleteCan’t wait, Diane.
DeleteThe ice is showing signs of weakness here, including open spots. Though on one of our rivers, crews actually get that started by blasting the ice.
ReplyDeleteI’ve never heard of blasting here, William.
DeleteSoon enough it looks like! I feel like we have all be in a frozen prison lol!
ReplyDeleteThat’s how I feel, Jenn.
DeleteGlorious images. On this side of the pond there are signs that summer is releasing her stranglehold.
ReplyDeleteI wish you cooler days, EC.
DeleteAfter having the snow here, I can really appreciate how cold and long your winters are and how you both still manage to get out so much to observe it. Sarah x
ReplyDeleteI imagine the recent snow had a huge impact in your area, Sarah.
DeleteI think you're right, it could be the break we all are looking for. Beautiful photos, Marie!
ReplyDeleteSnow in the forecast, Bill. Ugh.
DeleteIf the geese are back, it MUST be Spring!
ReplyDeleteI know!
DeleteWe get large flocks of white parrots here in the autumn - and they are here, which it means it MUST be spring for you soon!
