You have to admire their tenacity. In a rock face,
or in a piece of driftwood,
a seed finds enough soil to sprout and grow.
How do seeds thrive in rock and other inhospitable substrates? There must be enough soil in the crevices to sustain them.
Seeds are on a mission. Propagate! Grow! And they do, in harsh circumstances where they hang on, even thrive, long enough to bloom and produce seeds.
Roots push into cracks and crevices and water gets in. The frost and freezing in the harsher months creates a bit more soil and the next year a few more seeds can sprout. Before long a patch of wildflowers is thriving.
Tenacity helps plants establish life in the most adverse circumstances.
Sounds familiar!
Don't forget the plants that grow in little cracks in sidewalks. Amazing really.

ReplyDeleteI always think it amazing at the places plants will grow. At one point there was an old building down town that had a tree growing on the roof...and it was a 'wild' tree...not one someone planted in a pot.
ReplyDeleteAnd somewhere I have a photo of a tree that was growing up out of an old silo. I had watched it for years before I finally made a point to stop and photograph it and the next time I looked the silo and tree were both gone.
That being said, it would be interesting for you to go back in a year or two and see what has developed.

ReplyDeleteI too am often amazed by the places where plants find a foothold - trees that grow out of cliffs, flowers that take root on walls and once, at 6,000 feet up in the Yugoslavian mountains, a tiny pansy growing in a crack in a boulder surrounded by ice and snow. That sandstone is a wonderful colour to highlight the green growth.
