Our morning walks along the boardwalk in Summerside inspire us. Seniors of all ages are on the move in that great setting, using a variety of means. But not only seniors of all ages, seniors with a variety of mobility issues are moving to the best of their ability, some with assists. They are out and about, enjoying nature even though it may not be easy.
One day, a senior wearing a helmet, elbow and knee pads roller bladed past us. It is common for seniors to bike along the boardwalk too.
An elderly gentleman used walking sticks to help him along. My physiotherapist recommended I use them as well, so I asked the man about them. He responded, "I wouldn’t be able to walk across the room if didn’t use these. They could help you too.” He walked slowly, but he was moving.
Canes are a common assist used along the boardwalk.
This time of year, one can see bandaged knees below the shorts sometimes.
The most determined seniors are those who walk the trail pushing their walkers.
One elderly gentleman, over a period of days, appeared to get stronger.
We have a walking track in town also, which is well used by people of all ages and levels of mobility. My preference will always be the great outdoors, with the birds singing and the squirrels chattering. Many other seniors appear to agree.
It's wonderful to be outdoors when the weather is fine. I'm glad you have such a large group of seniors out there enjoying the outdoors. It's very therapeutic to be active, I think. :-)
ReplyDeleteIt really is, Jan.
DeleteI can see why they like walking these places. That boardwalk and those paths look very inviting. I'm not that old yet, but I hope I am still doing this when I do get there.
ReplyDeleteYou are on the right track, or trail, Ratty.
DeleteThat's great seeing people take advantage of such a place. Walking is beneficial to your health both mental and physical. We have the coastal walk here and you see the same kind of seniors taking advantage of it.
ReplyDeleteNice photos Marie, they illustrate your story well.
Have a wonderful weekend.
Thanks, Bill. Your coastal walk sounds great!
DeleteThat is wonderful!! Wish every town big or small would have places like this for people to walk. People's health improves in all levels, physical, psychological, spiritual, etc. Have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteThere are great benefits from walking such a trail, Angela
DeleteLove it. I don't walk easily or fast or (at all) elegantly but I do walk. And hope to continue.
ReplyDeleteAnd the walks you take us on would inspire me to do just that.
Great, EC. Keep on truckin'.
Deleteunassisted walking, some people take it for granted. not me, as i often need the help of a cane, walker or even a scooter. i don't like that i sometimes need help, but i'd much rather be outdoors!! have a lovely long weekend!!!
ReplyDeleteWhatever it takes, Debbie. Keep going!
DeleteI go for a brisk walk every evening around my streets and back again. Unfortunately I don't have a scenic boardwalk with birds and squirrels at my disposal, but I can walk round the pond, and usually scare the heron who is looking for his dinner! I'm happy to walk, as I have nasty memories of plodding along using a 4 wheel walker last summer while recovering from hip surgery.
ReplyDeleteWe can't take our mobility for granted, Shammi, as you saw last year. How great to come through that experience so well though!
DeleteWalking is so important for EVERYONE, Marie, but especially for those of us "seniors" who need exercise after retirement. You're reminding me that I need to go take a walk! I'm lucky to have a citadel path outside our backdoor that is to die for...similar to your boardwalks in that regard. Let's do Keep on truckin', no matter what, as long as we are able!
ReplyDeleteKeep movingis a good mantra, Ginnie.
DeleteFantastic! I love to see people determined to carry on whatever.. it would be so easy to just give up!
ReplyDeleteit is so easy to give up, PDP. Especially when the going gets tough.
DeleteI guess I shouldn't feel too badly about my pains and a bit of a limp.
ReplyDeleteI feel guilty for complaining when I see some of the determined walkers on the boardwalk, AC.
DeleteLet's keep moving! Even though I joined a gym, I prefer the outdoors. Our winter are tooooo long!
ReplyDeleteIndeed they are, Catarina.
ReplyDeleteWalking is the best exercise! And staying active is the most important thing you can do.
ReplyDeleteWalking is my favourite exercise, FG.
DeleteHow wonderful to see so many seniors out and about, active and moving in such a pleasant setting! I would far rather be outside, than in, any day! Enjoyed your pictures, and observations Marie :)
ReplyDeleteWalking is such wonderful exercise, eapecially outdoors. I always enjoy reading of your walks, Marilyn.
ReplyDeleteIt is so nice to have a safe place to walk. My neighborhood which is old has some cracked and raised areas. I've done a stumble more than once.
ReplyDeleteThe uneven surfaces are bad for us seniors, Barbara. That's one reason people like the indoor track
