Spring ice

For the spring equinox yesterday, my husband and I went to the beach at Linkletter Park just west of Summerside. The harbour at Summerside is frozen still from temperatures cold enough to sustain the ice. From a distance, it looked like there was open water at this park, an unusual sight thus far in 2018. We were disappointed.

What looked like open water was clear ice over part of Miscouche Cove.

Beyond this area, the ice and snow covers which are characteristic of the winter coastline, look to be broken into chunks and frozen underneath.

With the bitter wind, it felt more like late January.

The coastline is snow covered,

the playground equipment

and picnic tables frozen into the earth.

They provide the foreground for the more famous Confederation Bridge and the Indian Head Lighthouse in the distance.

Snowmobile trails skirt the shoreline

We hear birds in the distance though they are unseen, probably fluffed up and sitting in the evergreens. They are the only indication of spring. However, the return of longer days and strengthening sun will soon melt the ice, won’t it?

  1. It does seem to look like water at first glance.

  2. I sure hope it begins to warm up there soon. I just read an article that says spring is starting earlier and earlier in most places. I guess not there, huh? :-)

    1. It has been a weird winter with the freeze and thaw cycle we’ve had. Spring is taking it’s time however.

  4. Beautiful shots!

Spring is elusive here too, but there are some signs. Some of the ice on the Ottawa River is breaking up.

  6. Oh My Goodness....You must be a hearty woman. Not much would get me out to walk in the freezing cold. I, admittedly, am a wimp in temps below 57°.

  12. You really do look like you are having a chilly and long winter. We have had sun over the past couple of days but with it has come heavy frosts. We all need higher temperatures and a bit of sunshine I think. Take care Diane

  15. I really like your ending question, Marie, because one really wonders if spring WILL come. HA! It's been such a strange winter for us here in the Netherlands, after many winters of mild temps hovering around 40-45 F. In this first week of spring this year we have had some of our coldest weather this winter. But we ARE seeing the sprouting of the spring flowers everywhere.

However, I must say that seeing all that ice and snow still there, what we have in comparison is totally spring. HA!
