Our friend Phyllis Buchanan DesRoches has a beautiful cottage at Thunder Cove on the north shore of Prince Edward Island. The beach at Thunder Cove is one of the most beautiful on PEI.
The sea stacks at the western end of the beach, especially the famous Tea Cup, add to the beauty of the area. However, my husband and I have never seen Thunder Cove in winter. Phyllis shared her photos of the area with us and gave me permission to share them with you. These photos were taken on her cell phone.
Last week the ice was on-shore due to the northeasterly wind. When we were last on the north shore, a southerly wind kept the ice off-shore. That beautiful beach looks a bit different when ice fills the shoreline.
Three sea stacks in the area look different too as they stand amid the ice and snow. The one in the foreground resembles a vase.
Behind it in the photo is a block-like stack, while the Tea Cup takes centre stage.
Before long Phyllis will be back at the cottage for the warmer months when the snow and ice are but memories of the past winter. Meanwhile, one can appreciate the beauty of nature in any season.
P.S.
Yesterday I did the dance run as usual. I picked up my ten year old granddaughter from her dance class and dropped her home. During the fifteen minute drive we catch up on school and family news. She has my full attention and we love those precious minutes together.
She talked about war, the Russian leader and Canada taking in Ukrainian refugees. She will welcome any newcomers to our area and looks forward to meeting them. The tragedy of their situation wasn’t lost on the child and she struggled with the reason for such a tragedy.
She is not alone.

Your first photo lulled me into a state of complacency before the rest of the photos showed me that "winter in Thunder Cove" was every bit as foreboding as it sounds, though with a certain stark beauty.
Please thank your friend for the pix. Such a wintry scene.
My State governor has messaged Biden to offer hospitality to Ukrainian refugees and pressed along with our senators, successfully, for tpsfir them, too. Tps= temporary protected status, meaning visas automatically conferred for refugee status, can't be deported.
We have a big Ukrainian population, won't need camps.
The Tea Cup is so aptly named!
The beauty of winter...
The weirdness of these times we are living in.
I was a child, in WWII.
And now, in my 80's, I am living through this........
Surreal....
🌼
You have a very precious granddaughter with a tender heart.
I really don't understand this horrific tragedy either.
Gorgeous snowy photos..so unusual with the stacks surrounded by ice.
Thanks for sharing.
Sue
Time in the car provides the opportunity for great conversations. Love that your granddaughter is so sweet and caring. Thank your friend Phyllis for the winter photos. I think I prefer the beach in the summer.
What a great name, Thunder Cove. The teacup is unique and the beach is stunning.
Hello,
The beach and sea stacks are a beautiful sight. It is nice you are able to spend time with your granddaughter, catching up on all the latest news. The Ukraine takeover is is a terrible tragedy. Take care, enjoy your weekend!
Beautiful photos - my thanks to your friend.
The Ukraine. Horrible. If I could wish one thing beyond its being over, it is that those responsible would be held accountable.
Gorgeous shots.
Thank you and your friend for these pictures about the beauties of nature. They are very welcome in these times.
Interesting to see the shoreline in different seasons. And yes, the Ukrainian situation is tragicc.
Lovely photos. Thank you for discussing current events with your granddaughter.
Gorgeous in summer, but fascinatingly beautiful in winter, too. I am having difficulty with the Ukraine invasion, too. Praying for them and glad the world is sending Ukraine weapons, although it won't level the playing field. :-(
These are lovely photos of the area.
There's always change in sea ice with the tides. We went under the ice when the tide was out at Wakeham Bay Quebec. You've probably seen articles and photos of Inuit going under the ice for mussels.
That special time together is wonderful. She will remember always.
The pictures are stunning.
Winter does have a way if changing the landscape, Marie. As for Ukraine, it is beyond comprehension for most of us.
The title of this post would make a good title for a novel or even a biography. If it wee a mystery, I wonder how it would unfold,
Interesting pictures and dialogue, but most of all I really like your conversation with your grand daughter. The young see right to the heart of things.
Beautiful photos. Thank you and Phyllis
Her photos are spectacular and hard to believe they were taken on her cell. She really captured the beauty of the season.
Thank you for the powerful winter pictures.
New word for /me...sea stacks.
Thee horror of the war isn't lost on us either.
Stunningly beautiful Thunder Cove in sunshine, but not a place to visit on a wild winter's day.
You must be so proud of your caring Granddaughter and the loving family she is growing up in.
I bet you are proud of your granddaughter for thinking about others and considering what they are going through.
How lovely and how different the beach is with the seasons! It is wonderful that even 15 minutes can be a treasured time with your granddaughter. Yes, our thoughts and prayers are for Ukraine.
Lovely photos. I was born in WWII. I just hope that peace returns very soon. so so sad. Take care Diane
Hi Marie, What a wonderful post. I just sat here for a few minutes reflecting on your Postscript. What a sweet granddaughter you have. If there are enough young people out there who think like she does, we are going to be okay. Now, you know me … I could go on and on about Phyllis’s pictures of the beach at Thunder Cove. I will just say this, I could look at that first image all day long … wishing I was there! :-) And the sea stacks are amazing. Thanks to Phyllis and you for sharing the excellent images! Take good care and have a fine week ahead. John
I've never seen a beach in winter with snow like that before! it never snows here in Brisbane! It look so pretty - although I do prefer the first pic that is more like winter here, haha! :)
It's good you can talk to your granddaughter about such sad things too. The world can be a scary place sometimes but there is always goodness and people willing to support those and give help to those impacted by it.
Hope that you had a good weekend! Was a hot and sunny one here :)
Away From The Blue
It amazing how young people is so aware of what going on in world.
Coffee is on and stay safe
Such a sweetheart. The beach picture is amazing. Quite different from the red cliffs.
Your header photo is so colorful and looks so charming, I could live right there! So many things happening in the world now...thank you for a little "escape" to enjoy your lovely part of the world. Mary
Wow..that is so incredible. So unique. Nature never ceases to amaze.
these are beautiful images of thunder cove, i like seeing the natural grasses softly surrounding the area. the tea cup looks so pretty surround by ice!!
this is a good time for children to really learn about war, instead of just reading about it in books. as difficult as all of this has been for all of us, i am not sure children, teens and young adults fully understand the gravity of the situation of war. it's nice that your granddaughter is talking to you about this in such a mature way!!
Beautiful photos!
So much beauty in certain parts of the world and so much ugliness in others parts of the planet...
i thank your friend for magnificent photos dear Marie
winter beach covered under heavy snow makes me sad .
your time with granddaughter is precious indeed ,she sounds smart and wise child by talking about refuges in such positive manner ,what a blessing to have children with such insight
I suspect there is only one person on this earth who doesn’t understand the horror that is happening in Ukraine - unfortunately he is in charge of the country that is orchestrating the attack.
love the photos! so sad that even young kids have to worry about such things as Ukraine. hard times for us all lately.
Lovely images, can't believe one of your grandchildren is 10 where does the time go! Such difficult times for those in Ukraine, actions taking place on civilians is horrific.
