A day with sparkle

We make the most of the days without much wind on Prince Edward Island, enjoying our time on the boardwalk immensely. Any day we don’t have to put hoods up and heads down as we walk along the familiar path is a bonus day. This particular day was very different from the one described in my previous post however.

It was a grey blue sky day and earlier than we normally arrive at the boardwalk. A hint of the colourful sunrise just an hour earlier remained in the eastern sky and the Confederation Bridge disappeared into the ether.

The air was bitingly cold, with that east coast dampness that cuts to the core. Winter without the wind!

My husband and I noticed the sparkles on the water, where the ice was forming overnight.

The bay hasn’t frozen over yet this season but nature has cast her icy wand over the sea a number of times. Every time, a return to mild temperatures foiled her efforts. Later this week, an Arctic blast of air will probably do the trick however.

This particular day, the view from the bridge presented an interesting phenomenon

as hoar frost had collected on the bulrushes and grasses in the marsh and only there.

The sparkles in the scene can be seen in close-ups of the bulrushes and grasses.

Meanwhile, on the bay, ducks swam among the sparkles too.

And all the while, regardless of conditions, other animals go about their business. A Hairy Woodpecker made his presence known as he tapped on a tree.

A fascinating discovery was a small flock of Common Redpolls, a species I had never seen.

It was a sparkling day along the boardwalk alright!

Wonderful sighting of the redpolls. I wonder if the weather changes have affected their flock movements?

A bracing day for a saunter! Our east coast can also have that chilling dampness.

OMG!

It is the magical beauty of nature that so delights, isn't it? As I inch closer to death I cherish all of it more and more and it's wonderful to read of your enjoyment!

Your sparkles are so beautiful. The first photo is a real wall hanger.
I love everything about it.
The frost on the weeds is really pretty too.
Glad you could get out and not freeze too badly.
Sweet little birds too.

Brrr, funny how something as little as a duck can float around in that cold water but we can't...

I bet you were happy to see the redpolls, Marie. They are delightful little birds. Some years they occur here in huge flocks, but I have not heard of any reports this winter. Stay warm down there!

I have not heard of the Common Redpoll. So exciting to see a species new to you! My old house was on a wooded acre and we saw all kinds of birds. I really miss being able to do that. Thanks for a wonderful post and a bit of education.

We have days like this as well - today has been one of them. What my daughter calls a blue sky day, though, very different from your pastel and muted sky. Great photos, as usual. Love the ducks in the mist and sparkly water shot.

Hi Marie, Another excellent post with interesting photos. This one triggered a memory for me. Being around the water, as much as we are, when the conditions are right, we are going to see the “sparklies” on the water. That’s what my wife and I have always called them. A few years ago, we had a day when the sun and wind were just right and the sparklies out on Puget Sound were amazing. I did a little research about it, on the web, and, discovered, first of all, “sparklies” is not actually the correct word. 😊 According to Wikipedia, the correct terminology is “sun glitter.” I think I will stick with sparklies. 😊 I also discovered early native American Indians thought the sparkles represented the souls of their ancestors. Reflections indeed! John

Beautiful landscapes, love the sparkles and the woodpeckers. Great sighting of the ducks. The Redpoll is a favorite, I have only seen one a long time ago.
Take care, have a great day and happy weekend!

You always capture such beauty of the wildlife in their natural environment. How I remember the cold winds of the island. A bonus day indeed, a day without wind! I have heard about the cold arriving in the northeast. We had it here for a few days, got down to -8 F here. The windchill is definitely the worst! Always love the hoarfrost. It will be interesting to see if the bay freezes over during the cold snap. Blessings to you!
