At some point this month I had to do some Christmas shopping so I started this past week, though reluctantly. Time is running out however. I don’t enjoy shopping. My husband and I find it difficult to shop for the grandchildren these days as their taste and preferences are evolving as they grow. Our daughter accompanied me one day which was a huge help. It was nice to have that time with her too. Her father joined us for lunch which was lovely.
We didn’t get to the boardwalk as often this week as a result but the scene there certainly changed in that time. Early last week, a seaweed dam at the mouth of the salt marsh had resulted in flooding of the marsh which had then frozen.
On Sunday last week, as we walked away from the parking lot, ducks were flying overhead to the north. With no open water in the salt marsh, the ducks had headed out to look for some.
That day, I captured a photo of a Dark-Eyed Junco which was feeding along the boardwalk.
The Bluejays are always entertaining of course. A flock of the pretty avians will appear quickly along the bridge if one offers peanuts, one of their favourite snacks.
The Chickadees require the shells removed from the nuts and wait patiently for them.
The vessel, Federal Ohio, came into port when Blacky left the previous week.
From the photo of what looked like a Coast Guard boat further in the bay, you can see how much ice was in the harbour.
Gulls were a highlight another day.
They played in the bay opposite the stream.
We heard honking overhead and I found the Canada Geese quickly enough to take a photo.
The mild temperatures later in the week melted much of the snow and ice in the area. The dam of seaweed at the mouth of the marsh gave way and the ducks returned.
When it turned cold again, they ice skated in the marsh to get to areas where the water was still flowing.
A Downy Woodpecker drilled into trees near the marsh
and a Mourning Dove perched high above the scene watched everything with interest.
On a more serious note:
In conclusion this week, I have news of a scam which targeted seniors on Prince Edward Island. Two people visiting the island phoned various islanders, addressing those who answered the phone with “Hey, grandma,” or “Hey, grandpa.”
I answered the phone one day. It looked like a local number so I said, “Hello.” When a male voice said, “Hey, Grandma,” I hung up without saying anything further.
Apparently the caller scammed several islanders out of money, saying he was the person’s grandson and needed money for bail. One senior however, arranged a meeting to pass over money, called the police and the scammer was arrested at the appointed place.
There are so many similar and worse scams going on these days that one has to be alert and suspicious of everything, especially unsolicited phone calls, emails and the rest.
Nature is an important reprieve from the worries of the world.
I wish you a scam-free week.

Glad you hung up right away on the scam call!
It seems like everybody is getting scammed these days. Good for that person who got the scammer arrested!
Your action shots of birds are so good. The blue jay ones are keepers. Good for that senior who trapped the scammer!
Breathtaking photos dear Marie all of them so lovely and beautifully captured!!!
i am glad your daughter joined you for the shopping for grandkids and how sweet of her father to come over as well
the scam sounds heartbreaking indeed
glad you figured out and hung up soon
best wishes for next festive days :)
Nice pics from nice outings as usual. I like the well balanced one of the two jays.
I loathe shopping too. Your other outings are MUCH more to my taste. As is the cool evident in your photos. Sadly that grandma scam exists the world over. Glad you hung up on them.
Smart of you to hang up. They made a movie about the grandma scam. It was a comedy but it showed how often such things happen. The first picture and the picture of the blue jays in the tree are my favorite.
Those bluebirds! WOW!
You always have wonderful photos to , thanks for sharing. That's sad that people are trying to scam others, glad you just hung up. I usually don't answer my phone if I don't recognize the number and their name doesn't come up. Everyone that calls and I save their number has their name added to it so when a name doesn't show up I know it not someone I know.
Scams are horrible !! We know from experience...
Be wise and just hang up is the best solution for sure.
I love all of your bird photos but the one of the ducks "skating" on the pond is adorable. You captured it perfectly.
Stay warm and cozy this time of year.
Sue
I always wonder if the birds feet freeze like ours would, should we venture out to the cold water. Obviously they are better insulated.
Very smart of that grandparent who was able to have the scammer arrested. I, too, would hang up. My 7 year old grandson better not be calling for bail money. :p
It would seem like it would not be too complicated to trace these thugs down.
Lots of birds this time. And one less scammer.
It's looking very wintry out your way.
Those scammers - such dreadful people. I have been receiving texts from an unknown number saying, "hey mom, I lost my phone - can you text me on this number?" No. I don't think so.
So glad there is an coast guard.
I grow weary if the weekly shopping... Christmas is added stress when you dint know what to get. I only have ine grandchild and she just dont want a lot. But seems thankful for whatever she gets. I need a place like your walking area...it might relieve stress. I am so glad someone thought to scam the scammer! It really ticks me off that they try to take advantage of us older people.
It's winter, but still the boardwalk offers so much joy to you and through your wonderful lens and words, to us. The Blue Jays look amazing in this stark, snowy scene. I was surprised at how much ice had formed and even more so, at how quickly it melted. This weeks temperatures will no doubt see it return.
I love the first blue jay shot and the waterbird playing. You do take wonderful story shots. We have gray skies and rain and more rain, but there is enough snow on the ground to make it look like December, at least.
And I hear you about the grandkids. I am giving up on them this year and they are getting cheques and a hug. To be honest, I had an aunt who always gave me money, and I loved it as it felt like freedom to spend on something I would not otherwise have chosen.
that junco and the blue jays are so lovely! I just give money these days to any young ones in my orbit. Who knows what they want?:) Cheers and happy festive season. sherry
No fan of shopping either, especially for teens. It does get easier when they are adults with their own homes.
Great bird pics, and good news about the scammer being caught.
Marie, Delightful images, as always. I truly enjoy the way you feature nature and maritime. Guess who else likes that in a blog too? 😊 Shopping: I do almost all of mine online, except for groceries. I’m one of those who likes to go to the grocery store almost every day and can’t bring myself to let someone else pick my vegetables. 😊 Scams: I saw, on the news, someone has figured out a way to get AI to answer scam calls and keep them on the line with questions, etc., until the scammer hangs up. I got a kick out of hearing about it, but don’t have the patience to do it myself. I’m with you on simply hanging up. Best regards from Seattle, John
Hello Marie :)
Lots of lovely nature sightings and great shots. My daughter does my Christmas shopping for my grandchildren because she knows better than I what they would appreciate. That said I love Christmas shopping for everyone else. Scamming is despicable. I never answer the phone unless I see a familiar name, I put the phone down if I don't recognize the number. Not to finish on a sour note, I wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
All the best
Sonjia
It sounds like you had a busy but meaningful week, balancing shopping with quality family time. It’s always a challenge to keep up with the evolving tastes of grandchildren, but it’s nice that your daughter was able to help! I can imagine the boardwalk scenery changing dramatically with the frozen marsh—it must have been quite a sight. I hope the rest of your shopping goes smoothly! I invite you to read my latest blog post: https://www.melodyjacob.com/2024/12/one-blogging-mistake-that-is-reducing-your-traffic-and-how-to-fix-it-now.html
You are a wonderful artist with the camera Marie...the photos of all your birds are fabulous. As I have said before it is amazing how many varieties you and I share. Have been taking pictures of the beautiful snow and the birds at the feeders this morning...truly it is nice to appreciate our birdies. Hope you and your family have a lovely Christmas (I don't like to shop either). Glad you didn't get scammed. We have had this same scam here in my part of the world too. Happy New Year too!
I used to quite enjoy shopping, but not anymore. After so many years of doing it it’s become a bit of a grind. Beautiful photos here, as always.
Thanks for sharing this. Scammers are getting more and more sophisticated. Very scary. Happy holidays to you and yours!
Hello Marie,
I agree Nature is an important reprieve from worries and stress.
I love you sweet Junco, the Blue Jays, the woodpecker, the gulls and ducks. Lovely views of the water and boats.
Scams are happening more and more lately. I am glad they caught the scammer there. Merry Christmas to you and your family. Have a happy weekend.
Bellos espacios naturales, en el que que acuden diversas epecies animales para encontrar algo de alimento.
Feliz Navidad.
Scams proliferate it seems. The dark side of human nature is never far below the surface, Marie - sad, but eternally true.
The photo of the blue jays is spectacular. I've started giving the grandkids money bc I just don't know what to get.
Glad they caught the scammer.
Man alive! I HATE that scammers are able to get away with such despicable acts, especially at this time of the year, Marie. Thank God you knew what to do. And thank God for Mother Nature who DOES know how to heal us. I do wonder, however, about the Chickadees requiring the shells to be removed from the nuts! Would they die of hunger if no one was there to unshell the nuts...or would they learn to do it by themselves?? So many questions! And of course you would have snow and ice already, even if it has already melted!
Happy Holidays now to you and yours. Soon it'll be 2025!
It is always pleasant seeing and reading what is happening in beautiful PEI from a long way away.
: )
i dislike in person shopping but i do well on-line and make many of my gifts!! my mother gets those call all the time, thank goodness for the quick thinker that got them arrested. nice photos today!!!
Scams are the pits. We noticed money going out of our bank account on my card!!! Four payments but luckily we watch the account quite closely, The bank eventually paid us back.
Love all these photos, great shots. Happy Holidays, Diane
So good that you knew to hang up on the scammer. I have found it difficult to purchase gifts for my great nieces as they get older. Such lovely photos. Wishing you a very merry Christmas!
Christmas shopping is the bane of all civilised people I think! I need little excuse to go birding - and shopping in any form is enough to have me running for the door!
Really like the first blue-jay picture!
Wishing you a happy Christmas / Holliday and Great New Year. SM - Melbourne
I just cannot get over how dramatic your weather changes are!
Yes, grandchildren get increasingly hard to buy for. Eldest grand-daughter just wants money!
Glad your daughter helped with the ideas for gifts. Sounds like a fun day. The scam stuff is a big deal. It's happening so many places and in various ways. It's so gross. We've gotta be careful that's for sure. Glad they caught the one guy. That's a start.
