Lobster season began recently and it draws us to the sea every spring.
My husband and I went to the New London Lighthouse this year,
one of our favourite places where boats are so close to land in the channel.
One will always find Cormorants and Gulls in that area. One Cormorant flew off in front of a mussel boat which was headed to port.
We picnicked at Cavendish Grove that day,
enjoying the beef stew I made for the occasion. Later we walked towards the coast, passing an Osprey nest which was occupied as its partner ate nearby.
Last week I saw my first Merlin, which was a thrill! However I have seen it since along the boardwalk and fear for the Song Sparrows in the area. Merlin’s can grab their prey right out of the sky.
One evening, my friend and I did another Owl Prowl without any luck. We did see lots of woodpeckers that evening near the Dunk River though.
My friend and I will go another evening soon. The old dirt roads are waiting.
One morning, as my husband and I prepared for our walk, we saw a fox across the street. We don’t usually see them in the day, but this time of year, when foxes are feeding their young, we often see them hunting in the area in daylight. It was a foggy morning which affected the clarity of the photo but this fox has something in its mouth, probably food for its young.
Another day, when we arrived at the end of the boardwalk, two large hares were eating in the grass there. They were both brown except for their feet and lower legs which looked like white boots. Another walker with a dog scared them off before we could get better photos.
It was a rainy day which required use of an iPhone for photos. Such circumstances almost guarantee we will see some interesting creature and struggle to take photos.
Finally today, I am struck with how adaptable seniors have to be to continue to have any quality of life. With diminishing senses and bodily functions, declining mental acuity and physical ability, life requires we adapt.
A friend told me recently she didn’t want to adapt. We talked about what she wanted for her life at this point in time. If she didn’t adapt, her life would get much smaller, confined to the house. By the next week, she had come to terms with the conditions she faces. She has adapted.
In some respects, we become invisible as we get older, an afterthought in society which bustles around us. However, we are here, adapting to life as it is for us at this stage. Just give us a few minutes!

Yes, aging is one adaptation after another, isn't it.
We have merlin activity round here, and there's one stretch of open road where they hunt. I had a mourning dove fall onto my windshield once, evidently escaped from the merlin I saw overhead. Maybe too big a prey to hold onto.
Hello,
Wonderful post, I love the beach view and lighthouse. Congrats on your Merlin sighting. Awesome shot of the Osprey. I love the fox and bunny too. Quality of life is so important, we have to keep moving. Take care, have a great day and happy week ahead.
What a great week for spotting wildlife! I don't think I've ever seen a hare.
A really good post, Marie. I loved all the great shots, and especially that beautiful fox. I enjoyed this very much.
Marie,
Your photos are great!
Lobsters are in, the stew was hot,
A Merlin showed up (the sparrows better not).
The fox was foggy, the hares wore white,
Woodpeckers laughed through the owl-less night.
Adapting takes time, but we’ve got the flair—
Just give us a moment (and maybe a chair)!
Have a happy week ahead!
John
Big Hugs - Sending Positive Vibes Your Way - Such Lovely Photos
Rock On ,
Cheers
Lovely photos.
Things are moving much faster nowadays with technology.. I feel the seniors of yesteryear may not have needed to adapt as quickly as one needs to now. Even we feel a need to adapt in order to understand and keep up with our children.
Oh to live by the coast! Your pictures are just gorgeous. Living inland it is such a treat to see your photos by the sea. You take wonderful pics Marie. Yes aging has its challenges...most days I try to ignore it but reality says each day we grow a bit older. Still we have lived a life of many changes and we are extremely adaptable. Also being invisible is not such a bad thing at times. :)!! Have a great week. Hugs!
We have Merlins as well. The first time I saw one, was in the city where it had captured a small bird and was eating it in my evergreen. My brother assures me they prey on mosquitos and other flying insects more than the small birds, but I still don't like hearing their call.
Adaptation is something that I struggle with somewhat as well. I've always prided myself on being able to do hours of yardwork and still maintain a relatively tidy house. Now it is one or the other, and I sure feel when I do work hard.
I also agree, that we tend to be ignored, or considered as an afterthought, with the exception of one area. We are, according to social media, the cause of all the problems in the world. It annoys me incredibly to be labeled as a selfish boomer and worse.
Nice photos, you do see lots of wildlife. Love seeing the hares. Have a wonderful new week.
I'm astonished at how much I've adapted but this week my MEDICAL AID IN DYING (MAID) escape hatch arrived. It provides a measure of comfort knowing if I reach the point of being unwilling to adapt further, I have an option.
Lighthouses, picnics and LOTS of wildlife. Wonderful to see - for you and for us. And yes, I can adapt or diminish. I chose to adapt.
We have a choice to be adaptable if we make a decision on time. Unfortunately many seniors are to late with their decision.
so many beautiful things to look at, this lighthouse is such a pretty one!! i saw that lonely picnic table and was so happy to read that you were able to give it some company. we are seeing a lot of fox too, and our osprey have been very busy!! good luck on your owl prowl, we had heavy rain today. sorry about your friend, that is so sad to read. my mom feels it too, but i do all of her difficult "computer" stuff!! i am happy to see you today!!!!
Hello Marie:)
I'm still adapting, but doing it with gusto.Lovely nature shots, and what a lovely looking lighthouse. The beach looks inviting too, and also the picnic table.
It’s good to see the boats out again, and you are right about adapting. At times I fight despondency, but I don’t mean that in a deep way, just in passing when frustrations occur.
Did someone say lobster...and beef stew!?! You sure know how to picnic, Marie, for which I applaud you both. I get my fill of Mother Nature's gifts when I come to visit you, which always delights me. Thank you. And, yes, if we don't adapt at our age, Life can be terribly miserable. Let's just keep walking and picnicking!
Yes and amen Marie.. Dave and I find ourselves in that advanced stage of life and we are really trying to adapt in the best way possible. The "Old Body" doesn't always cooperate the way we wish it would.
I love your photos of all of the critters you see on your walks and I like the lighthouse so much. I think I would wear out my camera shooting it all the time and the lobster boats too... and oh yes, that shot of the dirt road..Love it..
Sue
My adaptations have included a very, very expensive walker that is light enough that I can put it into my car and has big enough wheels that I can use it outside on grass and gravel.
Your first photo fills me with yearning. I loved it on PEI, especially at Cavendish where a baby bunny popped up and posed for my children - and my mother, the biggest child of all. She fought to be herself right to the end of her life - and I hope I will be able to do so as well.
To adapt or not that seems to be the issue (apologies to the Bard). This decision can affect one’s quality of life as you have noted, Marie. We should all make the most of our days which you both do by getting outdoors and enjoying the world around and a picnic too. Hope you and your friend spot the owl soon.
Facing the challenges of ageing requires a lot of fortitude and grace, that I hope I can have throughout the coming years.
Was that your first picnic with the beef stew? Such a great idea to eat outdoors whenever possible.
I hope the lobster and mussel boats have a successful and safe season.
As always, a visual treat, Marie. A beef stew picnic sounds just perfect!
Adapting, hmmm. I find that I am not wanting to learn any new technology these days, but it seems to be foisted on us at every turn. I am thankful that my kitchen is still simple, no fancy gadgets there to confound me!
Lorrie,
We had our first picnic at Kildare Capes prior to the picnic at Cavendish. We eat on our patio most days in the summer. We have such a long winter so we enjoy the outdoors when we can this time of year.
Interaction with nature is about the best kind of adaptation I can think of. Age and infirmity may modify daily habits, but the connection to the wild world is all important. It is vital in my world and absolutely non negotiable.
Like a tour of the island - boats, a lighthouse and interesting wildlife. The pictures of the Osprey are excellent!
Adapting always to things. Adapt or die. So to me, change is here to stay, throughout the life I live. I'm okay with that. I moved around a lot of as a kid and that made me adapt quickly to things. I'm glad your friend made her mind to change.
Thank you for your comment about Bug. We miss her bunches.
Mother nature at it best.
Marie, this post fills me with longing to be back on the island right now and yet in five weeks the scenes will be quite different . The trees will be dressed in green for a start.Happy owl hunting.
I think I've adapted without realising! Foxes are such beautiful animals.
Wonderful post. I love the wildlife and lovely scenery. It makes me smile and that is good. I just got out of the hospital with yet another bout with COVID. I will be a shut in for a while, but my deck garden is calling me.
You had me at “Lobster Season.” Oh, my!!
Does one ever get tired of lobster and mussels? I think not, but I am guessing if you lived up there, you just might.
Beautiful moments spent in magical environments dear Marie 🥰
These short spring months must last so long in heart I believe 🤗
I loved dunk river and birds of prey ,fox and hare everything symbol of life !♥️
I am glad that your friend learned to adapt eventually.you convinced her rightly my friend 👍🥰
At 54 I have started to learn that life is hard when body is declining. I want to keep trying
oh yes you have to be brave and resilient when getting older. It can be so hard sometimes. Love the hares and the fox!
