Island beauty

It has been a windy week and the temperatures have been cool, which we enjoy. It was a busy week and we walked between the raindrops a few days. The grasses along the boardwalk bent to the wind and we held on to our hats.

The bay was busy this week as well with sailboats, pleasure boats and an occasional fishing boat.

In the salt marsh near the mouth of Bedeque Bay, two Green-winged Teals joined the regulars,

Mallards and Black Ducks. The Teals are small compared to the regulars and camouflaged in the marsh. Can you see the two Teals in the picture?

One day, I discovered a male Northern Flicker

among the trees as I watched the now former nest site of a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker.

We spent some time at Cavendish with our friend, Helen, last week. Sadly, I had forgotten my camera’s card that morning. We did manage some photos with the cell phone, however. The Grove has the green glow these days and was the perfect place for our picnic.

It was a great day and Helen and her husband, Frank, are like family now. We hope Frank will be able to visit next year again.

A chipmunk ran up a nearby tree after lunch was over.

Along the trail, a dragonfly flitted about, stopping long enough to be photographed.

We stayed close to home with our bike riding last week due to the high winds. However, we hope to be back on the trails this week.

Despite the wind, the peonies

survived the worst of the week. The blooms are huge

and plentiful but short-lived.

This past Saturday, an airshow at nearby Slemon Park, meant we could watch the show from the front of our house. The airport was part of the Canadian Air Force Base which was established during World War 2 and closed in 1991. The airport is still in use, such as the night our first grandchild was born in distress and was airlifted to Halifax hospital within a few hours of her birth.

I took photos of the aircraft during the show.

The best photos were of the Canadian Forces Snowbirds

in their Tutor jets.

The loudest was a Hornet which flew over the house, the sound following it at a distance. It was a reminder of the sounds which many people in the world hear today and fear as the sounds of war. However, in an age when drones are used in war too, some cannot be heard apparently. Is that better?

As we watched, safe at our home on a pleasant afternoon, it was impossible not to think of others in less secure situations in various places around the world. It was a reminder of how fragile our peace can be and a thought for those suffering now.

Meanwhile, we are thankful for the peace we enjoy and the beauty around us. We will never take it for granted.

Our daughter took this photo of her husband bass fishing on Grand River last week. I wish everyone in this world such peace.

Such a serene post, Marie. I too wish the world was at peace, but we are fortunate to live in areas that are mostly at peace. Thank you again for the pictures and commentary.

Some spectacular shots here -- the Snowbirds, the peonies, that cute chipmunk!

Fun watching and taking photos of the air show! I only found one of the Teals. The other two water fowl I saw look more like the Black Ducks in the other photo. The Teals really blend in.

Your Peony are so pretty! The last photo looks and "says" peaceful. This world could sure use more peace.

What great pictures of the planes in formation. I think Peonies are the prettiest flower, even prettier than Roses.

As I was the mum of two boys, we went to many air shows. I always loved seeing the Snowbirds and their fancy flying. Did your peonies have those big black ants living in the blooms? Mine always had them and I had to make sure the little devils were all gone before I brought cut flowers into the house.

Your photos are always so stunning, my friend. You have a gift for capturing nature in its finest!

How special to see the Snowbirds! Pure Canadiana.

Peonies are the prettiest flowers, and perhaps we appreciate them so much because they are short-lived.

Our peonies have big ants and tiny ones. I gave a bunch to my friend recently and had the blooms in the house where I killed ants for a day first.

Yes that's my wish too. Peace to all.
I love the Snowbirds and their acrobatic maneuvers.
Great place to picnic and watch the boats and critters.

What a lovely post Marie. I feel the peace that surrounds you through photos and your words. You are so correct that we should never take our peace for granted. We too have the flickers. I am not sure but are they not related to the woodpeckers? They seem to enjoy their holes in the trees. Had some baby ones in an oak a couple of years ago. So fun to watch their little heads peak out chirping for food. Hope your July brings you many more picnics, walks, and bird watching. Have a great day. Hugs!

Hi Debbie, the Flickers are indeed woodpeckers but they spend time picking insects off the ground too. They are beauties!

Dear Marie, your lens reveals
The Island’s grace, the way it feels—
Wind in the grasses, teal in the reeds,
Peaceful moments, gentle deeds.

The Flicker calls from trees nearby,
While dragonflies in sunlight fly.
The Grove aglow, a chipmunk’s dash,
Raindrop walks and seagulls’ splash.

Snowbirds soar in quiet might,
Their arcs a dance of sound and light.
Yet in that thunder, thoughts arise
Of fragile peace beneath our skies.

Through all, your photos gently show
A world of wonder, calm and glow.
I thank you for the view you share—
A soul that sees, a heart aware.

Your walks sound so nice. I for one have always loved to walk in a summer rain. I found though when I was younger to not wear non waterproof mascara! lol...Love your area to walk. So nice, and peaceful! Enjoy!

What a week you had. Even with the wind, it sounds like you made the most of it spotting those Green-winged Teals (I definitely had to zoom in to find them, discovering the Northern Flicker, and that picnic at The Grove. It's awesome that Helen and Frank are like family now.

Every sight gives delight to senses ,the birds and blooms are breathtaking 😍

Spending time with friends during such beautiful season is bonus undoubtedly 🥰
Yes , not all the people are as fortunate to live their life peacefully my friend!
Despite we can’t control harsh conditions like this,I too keep praying for them 🙏

What a great photo of her husband. And that teal and northern flicker are beautiful. How wonderful to get such a good shot of a dragonfly!
It's the Wales Airshow just down the road this weekend so we will have jets and planes of all sorts flying over too. Wonderful to watch but, as you say, must be terrifying for refugees.

I know that nowhere is perfect, and that we're definitely more fortunate here in the US than a lot of other people are, but Canada seems more and more peaceful every day.

I'm impressed you have peonies that late in the year! Ours are long gone well before June.

I love that chipmunk picture! S/he looks so cute!
