Sunflowers Past and Present

Their gorgeous yellow faces make me smile. I see the dark center as an eye with a rim of yellow petal-lashes around it.

They can be tall with a single bloom

or dwarf with many.

Either way, they are glorious.

My earliest memories of sunflowers are of the late 1990s in France and Italy. My husband, Rick, his mother, Sylvia, our daughter Claire and I went on a tour of parts of Europe, including France and Italy. The fields of poppies and sunflowers were remarkable. They went for miles, over the hills and valleys, the sunflowers with their faces turned towards the sun. We were instant fans.

This year, because of our fascination with these beauties, we planted some dwarf sunflower seeds.

It took transplanting them twice before we found a good spot in the garden. Now they are in full bloom with their pretty faces turned towards the sun. Last week, a local retailer sold some blooms, so we could enjoy them in a vase as well.

Happiness is the face of a sunflower.
