Georgie had an owie, as our granddaughters call it. Georgie is their six year old golden retriever who stays with us when her family is on vacation. Several weeks ago, Georgie had surgery to remove a growth from the roof of her mouth. The growth was benign but there was a shaved spot on her leg where anesthetic was administered. Georgie licked the spot so much it was sore!
Hence, the cone around her neck prevents licking.
When she arrived at our house last week, we were determined to give Georgie some time without the cone. We bandaged the trouble spot and watched her carefully, using the cone at night. Meanwhile, the spot grew some hair which discouraged the licking. We weaned her from the cone completely and worked on weaning her from the bandage for the entire day.
Georgie is a great companion. She is friendly, eager, energetic and loving. She is also a great deal of work. I wonder though if there is any other creature in the world who loves as unconditionally as a dog?
Happy days are here again.

The cone of shame. Poor Georgie. Many years ago, our dog Shebah had an injury but no official cone was available, so she had to wear a bottomless blue plastic bucket with a dog collar attached to it.... now that's really embarrassing.
Retrievers are great dogs. If I were to have a dog, this is one that I would consider.
They are great companions and are the epitome of unconditional love. It sure was nice of you to get rid of her Cone of Shame. I remember dogs of my youth, but we don't have one now. They sure are a lot of work. :-)
Glad to hear she is all better now!
I'm sure you know, Dog is God spelled backward. They are the best.
Good you were able to get Georgie through the licking episode. It's tough. I had a friend whose dog ruined its leg by licking a hot spot.
I've never had to use one of those collars. Bless their hearts. Can a dog ever understand it is for their own good. They must think we have invented the cruelest trick. But what can you do. A terrible infection could have arisen from the sore if you had not been able to lend a hand. So glad you were able to help everyone - especially Georgie - out.
Poor dog. I hate those cones. I have found that Witch Hazel dabbed on stops them licking. That and my special Anglo Saxon words.
Lol. Inventive!
The goldens are wonderful!
Georgie went home this evening. We love her but it's great when she goes home.
Let's hope that the problem is solved.
Such imcredible creatures!
I hope she'll be OK now.
We are glad to help and enjoy time with Georgie but it's great when she goes home again. Until next time.
Lol! We know some of those words I think. We will try the witch hazel if the need arises again.
OMG. What a sweetie-pie. And YOU are to be commended for all the TLC you gave to bring her back to normalcy.
She is a wonderful creature to be sure!
