It was a bad storm late last week, possibly the worst this year. The usual culprits, tons of snow, high northeasterly winds and drifting were joined by thunder and lightning, our first experience of that phenomenon during a snow storm. It was a good time to stay inside.
My husband and I hadn’t been past the harbour since Wednesday. Three days later, we were surprised to see open water there.
The high winds, coupled with high tides, moved the ice off shore. The day before this latest Nor’easter, the sea was ice covered along the southwest coast.

Meanwhile the shoreline has pans of ice,
while off-shore some pans are grounded on sand bars.
The 24th was bitterly cold with the Northeast wind making it difficult to steady the camera. I would not have been able to set up a tripod. My hands were near frost bitten.
On the brighter side, at least the ice is gone!

Quite a change in a few days. Here, I am in awe of how much light there is. I'm talking about the strength, not so much the extended hours. I don't think I've ever noticed it like this before. Of course, I may say the same next year because I'll forget about my observations this year. :)
You live in an unforgiving land. Hand in there and do not slip o the ice. Taht photo of the playground is haunting and lovely at the same time
we had the same, but it was warm the day after and the days since so most of our snow is gone. i love the look of your pictures, clean, virgin snow, so pretty!!!
You've been hit Down East with so much snow! And so many bad storms, one right after the other!
Wow, the change came fast and before you know it, it will all be gone.
Wind can do marvels with ice. We missed that nor-easter, haven't had snow since just before the St. Patrick's Day weekend, but it's remained consistently at or below freezing.
Love to see the comparison shots Marie. Oh my gosh it does look bitterly cold. One p!us though, makes for amazing images!
That is a big change for just a couple of days. Wow! The Summerside Harbour photos are startling.
Guess the ice going helps but i hope that you soon warm up a bit more. I would never survive in those temperatures. Take care Diane
That is a huge change - which must fill you with hope. And glorious images. Thank you.
My kind of weather! Beautiful shots.
Thunder and lightning in the winter seems so strange!
You still managed to take great pictures... as usual!
I also have rarely seen thunderstorms occur along with heavy snow. So many Nor'easters in a row! Hope it's the last of them and we will soon be seeing bare ground and blue skies! :-)
Looks calm and peaceful! It amazes me that you out there to take the photos. I can be a bit scared of cold. Great photos! Thank you for the post!
Hard to imagine the cold and all that ice. I really enjoy your photos.
The light is not that gray any more, AC.
It was so cold there, Tabor.
Cold too, especially with the wind, Debbie.
Yes indeed, Debbie. Time for a change.
It happened over a morning, Bill.
It’s finally going to warm up here later this week, William.
We’re tired of the cold wind now, PDP.
Quite a change over one morning, Celia.
I guess you get used to it, Diane, tough I’m not sure about that.
It is hopeful, EC.
Not me, William!
It was unusual, Jenn.
Thanks, Catarina.
Blue sky today. Jan. A start anyway.
Taking off the mitts for taking photos is the worst part, Angela.
Thank you, Mildred.
Those pans of ice are really interesting. I haven't seen that before.
In Newfoundland some people jump from pan to pan Barbara.
