She walks with a cane but it doesn’t slow her down much. Five days a week, she and her husband walk the boardwalk in Summerside, Prince Edward Island. They are both islanders and know the history and culture of this place instinctively. They are great ambassadors for the island and for life.
He walks beside her though he is quicker on his feet and sometimes moves a bit ahead. Not for long though. He turns around and catches her eye and waits or walks back to her. They don’t speak to each other much. It’s all been said during their many years together. Each knows exactly what the other is thinking.
They greet everyone on the trail. “Good morning,” or,”It’s a beautiful day,” are standard but other conversations may ensue, especially if a dog accompanies the others. They both loves dogs.
The two observe all of the birds and other animals along the way. They enjoy every one and are in tune with their habits and activity and often share stories about them. The couple also knows every tree, bush and flower and their rhythm with the seasons.
They stop to speak with old friends, sharing the latests news and stories from their younger days. News of children and grandchildren is always spoken. They are proud of each and every one.
Their eyes twinkle, full of life and brimming with history and wisdom. My husband and I aspire to be like them in twenty years!
What a lovely word picture. I would love to know these fine people. And of course you will be just like them in another couple of decades. :-)
A charming portrait!

Sweet story. Love it.
A lovely story!
That sounds like the way I'd like my life to be when it slows down even more. Walking and looking at nature around you is the most precious gift we give to ourselves.
Definitely something to aspire to. For us all.
Thank you so much for this vignette.
What a beautiful story. As I started reading, it reminded me of a couple walking along the harbour yesterday evening. She had a cane, he had his arm locked with hers and they strolled along enjoying each others company. Thank you!
That is a great relationship, it seems. It does not happen often, I don't think.
What a wonderful description.
I have no doubts your aspirations will be successful Marie 💙💜
Lol. If I could be so fortunate, Jan.
Thank you Debra. That couple inspires me.
I totally agree, Barbara. Nature restores us in so many ways.
It is indeed, EC.
Many such couples around the world, Bill. Inspiring!
It is rare indeed, Catarina.
Thank you, AC.
From your lips, Grace.
They are Mage.
I hope you are just like them as you get older, too, Marie. I think you are heading that way.
They sound lovely! That's exactly how I want Nick and I to be when we're older.
