Foxy

This past August, my husband and I had an encounter with a fox early one morning on the boardwalk in Summerside, Prince Edward Island. I omitted this fox from any posts so here he is today. Foxes live in the area and we’d seen one in July and I suspect it was the same one. Its colouring and markings were the same.

We came around the bend in the trail and there it was, stood near the culvert area he frequents.

We were the only ones on that section of trail and we stopped to watch. He thought we’d have food I imagine. Its soft fluffy coat was a beauty, with markings of grey, black and red. White triangles on either side of its face were in perfect symmetry!

Eventually it sat on the stones watching us, not missing a move, content with the distance between us.

By this time another walked approached, walking the family pet. He stopped too and watched for a few minutes as the fox licked out its tongue. I imagined Foxy jeering the dog as it did so.

Foxy felt safe enough to lie down and continued to watch every move.

When the dog walker started to move forward, the fox disappeared into the undergrowth. As we continued along that section of trail, I looked back to see Foxy at the bend in the trail, watching us.

He disappeared into the woods as another walker approached.

This past month, just before Fiona blew through, we saw another fox on the north shore of the island. We didn’t get a good photo of this one, however, it spent several minutes scratching as we watched. As it walked away, it looked like it might be mangy.

Mange has ravaged the Red Fox population on the island in recent years. We can only hope our fox of the boardwalk stays healthy.

Hello,
The fox is beautiful. We see them in the forest around our house, they are shy critters. I hope it survives. Take care, enjoy your day!

What wonderful photos! At my old house we once had a den of foxes living under the deck around our pool. Honestly, they took over. In the morning we would find them sunning themselves on our chaise lounges!

We have foxes trotting around here looking pretty fit so the hunting must be good. I wonder if yours is young enough not to have learned much caution around humans?

We too have fox in our area ( Pennsylvania). Yet, I had never seen one for many many years. All of a sudden this past week - I saw three all at different times. Ours are red fox and look healthy. Your photos are wonderful as usual. Thanks Marie.

Loved your first photo. We don't have foxes here, so it was interesting to see how they can behave around humans.

I have only seen scraggly looking foxes, so I am super impressed by your boardwalk fox. Looking good!

I think we all need to accept these urban creatures as a natural feature of our landscape. They probably render a great service to humans by keeping down the rodent population, but that should not be our criterion. They have every right to exist as we do. All the best to you and Rick - David

We always enjoy seeing a fox out back, but have never seen one that close, especially one that sat and posed!

I think some foxes watch us very discreetly and we don't see them.

There have been foxes living within the city limits, and one nested in the drainage ditch behind a friend's home. She and her husband enjoyed watching the babies play. One was killed in traffic, but we think the mother took the rest away.
They truly are beautiful animals and very intelligent. I hope your furry friend survived and you'll see him on the boardwalk again some day.

Hi Marie, I love this post with the story and photos of your encounter with the Fox on the boardwalk. That fox is a cute critter! I would have stopped and snapped pictures, exactly as you did. Congrats on a very neat post! John

Great pics of this unusual fox. He was not afraid of you, but scurried back with others came down the walk. He seemed to trust you. Animals have senses we just don't understand. Thanks for sharing this experience.

I am having trouble commenting, Marie, but will try again. Love the fox pictures. Thanks for sharing.

Foxy is beautiful and what a special surprise as you rounded the corner to see it! Mange is horrible, hopefully it is at bay and does not infect the fox population again soon.

The first time I saw a fox in the wild was on PEI in 2016. We don't have them here. They are pretty animals, and I hope they survive.

Beautiful fox appears to like you two. Maybe his den is nearby or he knows people that picnic when he sees them. :)

Lovely photos and I love foxes. I hope people are not feeding them as there are so many dangers that can come forom that for both the fox and human.
