Riding the Trail

The part of the Confederation Trail which we can see in the city is snow free. My husband and I were eager to ride our bikes for the first time this season, so we dressed for the cold and headed out. The wind wasn’t high so the overcast day was comfortable as we rode the trail, feeling exhilarated after the long winter. The bumpiness of the trial this time of year kept us at a slow pace.

The trail was 99% snow and ice free, except for a small section which had just enough shade. There were small patches of snow on the trail itself though the ditches were full of snow in that area.

We turned around in Miscouche, about 8 kilometres from home where horses and an old barn and fence always make a good subject for the camera.

I waited for the foal to stand but it was resting while its mother, standing nearby, had lost a sock, probably in the dryer like the rest of us.

All along the trail the Song Sparrows were busy in the trees, invisible, but making their presence known occasionally when they sang to the heavens for all they were worth. I always notice them.

We headed back and as we approached Summerside, a young man with a dog walked towards us. Whilst biking, I am wary of dogs on the trail since sometimes they will dart towards the bike if the walker doesn’t keep a short lead. I moved further away from them on the trail but ran over a small patch of snow which unfortunately sat on ice.  Consequently I fell to the ground with the bike on top of me. There was soil in my mouth and nose and despite the helmet, I hit my left forehead, scratched my nose and cheek. My husband, riding behind me, saw the man lower his head and walk on, without saying a word.

I was stunned and it took a while to recover. I sat for a few minutes while my husband had a look at the bike which was fine. Slowly we rode home, my left arm and shoulder painful but able to move. The constant pain only lasted a day but I have bruises on my left arm and legs. It only hurts now if I reach with the left arm but I am healing well. The bike will have to wait for a while but I hope to be back riding the trail before long, when all the snow is gone.

Sorry to learn of your spill. But also glad to hear that you weren't hurt too badly. Love the pictures, especially of the horses.

It should have been an exhilarating ride. So sorry it turned out the way that it did. Do recover well and fully and get back out there. I haven’t even contemplated getting our out. Our trials would be too wet for one thing.

Oh dear, another fall off your bike -- hope you feel better soon and there's no lasting effects. Damn snow and ice!

Oh no! Glad it was not more serious and that you fully recover soon. Our friend has a foal and I swear that thing sleeps all the time. I am told it is because they are growing so much, so fast that is saps all their energy.

Sorry to hear about your latest fall. Glad you're not seriously hurt and are recovering fine. Take care, be careful and look forward to more happy trail ridings.

Hi Marie, OMG! As I started reading this post I was thinking all was well with you getting back to bicycling after your earlier accident. Wow, I am so sorry to hear about this last crash on the bit of ice you would have missed if not for the careless dog and walker. Isn’t this the way it goes? Darn. I hope the pain and bruises are gone soon and you are back 100%. I did enjoy the photos in this post and got a kick out of the one sock missing on the horse. Yes, it must have been eaten by the dryer! 😊 Wishing you and yours a good week ahead. John PS That first pic of the old barn is just wonderful!

Yikes! I'm glad you were okay after your fall. It's too bad the man with the dog didn't stop to at least see that you were fine.
I laughed at the horse losing one sock in the dryer!
Here's hoping you feel better soon and will be out riding again.

Hello,
Sorry to hear about the fall. The man was not very nice, he should have asked how you were. You could have really hurt yourself, more than you did. The horses are great sight, love the cute foal. I hope you feel better soon. Take care, have a great week!

Hello :=)
That gate definitely needs repairing, and the sock comment and photo made me smile, what a sweet image. Your fall did not make me smile, I am sorry you were hurt, but hope you are feeling better now.
All the best.

Oh! I am so sorry! I hope you are back on the bike again soon!

Ouch! I hope you recover quickly and can ride again soon. The scenery is so lovely. What a shame that the stranger chose to ignore your fall. It's sad to think that we have become so absorbed in ourselves that we don't care about another human falling.

I was thrilled to read that you were out and about on your bikes again and saddened by the end to this first ride. I am also appalled at the behaviour of the stranger.
I hope you heal quickly and can be back on your bike again soon.
Thank you for the gorgeous photos.

Oh no. Hope you get back on your bike. I chuckled at the mum losing the sock in the dryer!

Sorry about your crash! Interesting barn that!

Yes, when all the snow is gone. I am unfamiliar with e-bikes. I probably would have stopped exactly where I was and waited for them to pass. Sorry you took a spill and shame on the man with the dog.

Oh my gosh. I'm so sorry to read that you fell and that he just kept going the other way. Here, we have a park and all dogs are to be leashed. I cannot count how many don't. They say things like their dog is friendly and oh, it's okay the dog won't bite.

Balls to that. Keep the dogs on a leash. They charge, they want to play and sometimes, they bite.

Idiot owners.

Sorry your arm still hurts a bit, I wish you a full recovery soon. Big huggs, Me.

I hope you're all healed up very soon.

Sorry that on your first outing you had a fall. It's hard to get back after a fall but keep on cycling as I like the photos.

How awful for you! Prayers for healing
Beautiful ride with an unhappy ending.

Oh my Marie...More than ouch. I am so sorry you were hurt on your first time out. That man not even concerned about you makes me furious. At least he could have acknowledged you.
People!!
Glad your Hubby was there and you enjoyed your sparrow choir.
Continued healing and getting back to enjoying your bike.

Falling as one age usually isn't a good thing. I like the barn photo.

Oh dear, it's good that you haven't hurt yourself, have a good rest and then look forward to bike tours in the warm sunshine.

Oh dear, I hope you're healed up soon. Very rude of the young man not to stop or least say something as he walked past.

Granny Sue said...

Oh no. I am glad you weren't badly hurt. I had considered getting us bikes, but decided I get enough bumps and bruises without adding another source. I hope you heal quickly!

This should have been a safe bike ride if it had not been for this uncaring person. At least you were not badly hurt; it’s hard for me to believe someone would be so unconcerned when you fell and keep walking on.

HAHA.....wished I knew moms real name. I love your comment though, cute. Love the barns also. I think it was before you started following me, I visited a barn daily to feed my horse, the local pigs and cats. With my Fibro it bacame a major challenge, feeding, mucking stalls and hauling hay. I gave my horse to the wife of the guy that had the barn. I go at times to visit Misfire and she seems excited to see me. She is 30 yrs old now. Love horses, just more than my body can handle these days.

Sad that the young man had no manners. Sad that the last patch of ice got you. Glad you are recovering.
Love the old barn photo.
Our ice is gone and the road grader has been by once. A good thing as the erosion on one of the hills on our concession road had it down to one lane. Still not bikable, if that is a word, but better.
Once the snow is gone, can all the excess water please move out as well.

So sad. You really enjoy biking and this is so unfortunate. I totally understand about he dogs and I feel that dog owners should be more cautious when near others. Hope you feel better soon.

i felt heart breaking when read about your fall dear Marie .
how happy i felt when you mentioned your bike ride on the trail after snow melting .
i hope and pray that you will be ready to ride soon my friend !

i think the man should have be more careful and you must have felt bit more relaxed after seeing the dog ,i know they can be irritating sometimes but i realize that these creature's response depend more on our fear or nervousness.
please rest well and take good care ,more then you probably i am waiting for your ride to the gorgeous trails .
hugs!

Great picture of the barn!
So the man with the dog ignored your fall, and didn't come to your help. That was very rude of him!

Sorry to hear that you had a fall, Marie, and a pox on the unchivalrous jerk who didn't even stop to check on you. What is wrong with some people?

Hi Marie, I have just been surfing the web and happened to come across a photo of Gatklettur rock arch in Iceland. The photo immediately reminded me of your excellent post, Artistry of the sea, Monday, 22 February 2021. I wanted to share the photo with you and perhaps the best way to do that is via a Google search “gatklettur rock arch” Hope you enjoy. John

Marie, like all above, I was excited as we set off with you, for a wonderful virtual ride. That wonderful old barn, the joy of seeing a new foal, the laughter of the missing sock, and then the disappointment of your fall and the action of the ignorant young man. Do hope that by now you are feeling 100% better.

I am glad you were not too seriously hurt...but I find at my age that things bother me worse.
