Spring is in the air

Everywhere we go these days, the activities of the birds catch our attention. They are courting, building nests, and nesting. Some, like the Great Blue Herons wear their best attire in season.

Soon fledglings will add to the populations.

I heard a rustle at the base of some trees along the boardwalk one day and watched the area for a few minutes. A Song Sparrow was building a nest among the grasses at the base of some bushes. The tiny creature was well camouflaged.

We have noticed a pair of European Starlings around the boardwalk recently, two always together regardless of the location of the large flock. If one flies off the other follows.

Like the Starlings, a pair of Rock Pigeons follow each other around too.

This pair of Herring Gulls stays together

as do these Mallards.

The Mourning Doves are paired as well and provide an interesting chorus together.

These Downy Woodpeckers are never far from each other.

I couldn’t manage a clear shot of both. When compared to the Herons, these Downies are miniature.

At Cavendish Grove, despite the low water conditions, the Canada Geese which nest there every spring, are back in fine form. Small islands in the ponds are home to nesting Geese such as this one settled in on an island among the bulrushes.

Nearby the male stands over the scene, watching every move as an Osprey flies over and lands in a tree nearby. The gander keeps an eye on the Osprey.

Some of the birds, like this Northern Flicker, don’t appear to have found a partner yet.

It spends much of its time high in the trees calling out for a lady friend. Someone should tell him the ladies might be tired of his whining. I feel sorry for him.

We’ve seen though that all is not domestic bliss with all of the birds.

Meet the Osprey which have a nest on a platform near the boardwalk.

The birds are long term residents and like many Canadians, head south for the winter. Last fall, after they vacated the well-established nest, the Fiona weather system took down the pole and destroyed the nest. The city replaced the pole for the feathered visitors but the birds had to reconstruct the nest on their return a few weeks ago.

As you can see, they have made progress.

One day the two Osprey looked like they’d had a spat. One bird was on the nest while the other sat in a tree nearby, never once glancing at its partner.

Meanwhile, a crow sat in a nearby tree, watching the scene, waiting for an opportunity to have eggs for breakfast.

Through this season, the other animals are mating too. This chipmunk is gathering peanuts into its den when any are offered. It looks out expectantly as we walk by.

This time of year is wondrous!

Hello,

Spring is a wonderful time of the year. It is great to see all the birds returning and singing loudly. Love the Heron, woodpecker, flicker and the osprey images. Awesome sightings and photos. Take care, have a great week.

Even the osprey have a hard time working on home improvement projects as a couple! :-)

Your photos are incredible, but the chipmunk is my absolute favorite. I just love them so much.

Love all the critters and birds. Of those you showed, I think the osprey is my favorite. So fun to watch!

Life can be thrilling. It's nice for us when the birds don't readily find a mate because their calls sound so wonderful. I saw a single bee visit out pot of violas, and I was so pleased.

That last photo of the chipmunk is priceless! So cute.

The blue Heron is so beautiful. Those darn crows are rotten creatures but I guess that's just nature. I've had robins nest in the evergreen tree a few years and I don't think they've ever had fledglings that survived.

Enjoy spring!

If you use your eyes and ears, there's lots to see at this time of year. It doesn't matter how many times we've seen it , it's still interesting.

You have been extremely observant, Marie. Lovely images. Is the water level at Cavendish Grove lower than usual?

Your photos are wonderful. I love to see all the loving going on with the birds and all. You are such a good observer, too. :-)

It's not entirely a bad thing for the Ospreys to reconstruct their nests. It is an exercise in bonding and as you know even existing nests are routinely refurbished when the birds return from the south.

WOW, these are lovely. Can you tell the difference between a Downy and a Hairy. I have the most problems with that.

What a great photo of the chipmunk! And I love those woodpeckers. Our local rugby team is called the Ospreys. I'm not sure why except the team was formed when two teams combined. One wore black, the other white. So I suppose the team could have ended up being called the Penguins!

Hello :=) You are so right Spring is a great time of year and I enjoyed seeing the birds pairing up, all except for the Northern Flicker, poor bird! There is a lone male Chaffinch just outside my window, and it has been calling out endlessly for a mate for weeks. I too feel sorry for it. Lovely captures of the Eagle, Great Blue Heron, and the Downy Woodpecker in the foreground of your image. The last photo was unexpected but it's a very cute image of the Chipmunk.
All the best,

Hi Marie, Thank you for sharing yet another delightful post on Island Musings. I’ve got to comment on the last photo first … the chipmunk … OMG, if that isn’t a smile maker, I don’t know what is. 😊 And what a neat story about the Osprey returning and needing to rebuild their summer home. I did find the Song Sparrow and, yes, the camouflage is amazing. Lastly, (I seem to be going in reverse order) the Great Blue Heron. Beautiful, sharp photo of the bird and it brings a question to my mind. Do you notice on the forward part of the wing … are feathers missing there or is that just the design of the body? I am curious because I’ve seen the same thing on a Great Blue Heron, here, down by the waterfront. At that time I thought perhaps the wing had been damaged. Thanks again, Marie, for sharing your blog, and for your kind comments on mine! John

Hi John,

I think what you are noticing is the colouration along the leading edge of the wings at the joints. If you Google photos of the birds in flight, you get a better idea of what they are.

Glad you enjoyed the chipmunk photo. Even though the post was about birds, that little one deserved his spot there too.

Beautiful pictures of natures pairings. Some of our birds already have youngsters, some are nesting, while recently arrived migrants are singing every moment they can to attract a mate. That's one gorgeous chipmunk photo!
