The new green of spring

The leaves are on the trees now, having opened here in the Maritimes this past week. We had two days with temperatures of 30 degrees C and high winds which were disastrous for wildfires in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. We didn’t have much rain this spring and the forests were full of downed trees from Fiona last fall, tinder ready. Much of Canada has wildfires raging however. It is easy to get lost in the tragedies. In the east, a forecasted week of wet, cold weather will help with the fires.

Meanwhile, this past week, my husband and I enjoyed the burgeoning spring which has long been posted about by fellow bloggers throughout the Northern Hemisphere. We are slow of leaf here is Eastern Canada. However, enjoying every minute possible is a way to lift one’s thoughts beyond the tragedies, environmental and otherwise which abound today.

We continue to walk every day, if not on the boardwalk

or the Rotary Friendship Park, we head further afield for a walk and a picnic such as recent excursions to Cavendish, Bonshaw, Cape Egmont and Tignish Shores.

Plants of the forest floor are thriving now, as green takes over on multiple levels in the forest.

Tiny beauties such as starflower abound

as do wild strawberry blooms.

A painted trillium was a wonderful surprise this week, one of two varieties which grow on the island.

The blossoms on trees are brief but glorious. They cause us pause, to take in the delicate buds and blooms,

the subtle colours, the pistils and stamens,

ensuring fruit for another harvest.

Meanwhile, the animals go about their lives, the migratory birds having returned already. Some stop briefly while others, like the Great Blue Heron,

grace the landscape for the warmer months.

Spring is brief here, but welcome, enjoyed and appreciated. Nature has adapted to the short bounty of suitable conditions and so have we.

As I write this on Sunday to post Monday, it is windy, raining and feels like 3 degrees Celsius. We will don our winter clothes and walk between the drops amid the new green of spring.

I'm enjoying your beautiful floral photos this morning. I think it's dry right across Canada these days.

It is so, so beautiful there, Marie. I love your painted trillium and all the other flowers you showed me. And I am glad you are getting rain to help with the terrible wildfires. Enjoy your walk among the raindrops. :-)

Hello,
I do love seeing all the trees with their pretty green leaves.
The painted trillium is new to me, it is lovely.
Great Heron photo. I hope the rain helps to put out the wildfires.
Take care, have a great day and happy week ahead.

Spring does arrive eventually, but it takes its sweet time over there. I love that trillium.

Those wee star flowers are so pretty! Goodness, 3C; it's only 8:30 a.m. here and we are already at 22C, with an expected high of 31C. Wouldn't it be nice if we could somehow meld the temperatures together?

Thanks for sharing the beauty of your walk with us.

I have trillium envy! I've spotted many wildflowers but never seen a trillium. Around here they're rare and people don't mention their location, to protect them.

Marie, Neat pictures, every single one. You said, “…enjoying every minute possible is a way to lift one’s thoughts beyond the tragedies, environmental and otherwise which abound today.” If you don’t object, I would like to use that as a Closing Thought on one of my future posts. I will credit you, of course. I just find it to be a perfect reflection on today’s world. John

As fine as any spring pictures I've seen. Our spring is enormously dragged out this year, starting early and even now, in June, we've had no days of summer temperatures - nothing approaching 30C anyway. I expect we'll have a heatwave at some stage during the summer; that seems to happen most years lately.

It's nice to see the green return to the trees. Enjoy your walks among nature, it sure is pretty there.

John’s Island: John,

Feel free to use the sentence however you’d like. I’d be honoured!

I am so sorry to read about all the wildfires across Canada. Its so devastating. We have gone through several years of that here too in California.
On a happier note, I love your spring time photos, especially the delicate wild flowers.
I'm glad you can still get out and walk even if the weather isn't cooperating.

There is so much light and beauty in these images, Marie, that they are definitely spirit-lifting. I was thrilled to recognise the boardwalk view and then filled with joy by the blossoms and heron.

Fresh green leaves are lovely! Also here the weather changes unexpectedly, at the moment it is rainy and unusually cold.

Spring is a great season for weather and colors but .... I suffer a lot for seasonal allergies.
You live in a very beautiful place, it's a pleasure to walk through those woods.
On the Bolsena Lake the Herons have returned too.

As you say, spring is brief, Marie, so enjoy it to the fullest. I hope the smoke from the wildfires (is the whole country burning?) doesn't impact the Island too greatly. The last thing you need is poor air quality.

How lovely all of your photos are! Keeping you and everyone else in prayer during these wildfires!

Just catching up and enjoying the blossom photos and our blossoms at a fairly similar stage, if you could see them for the smoke. We have a local fire, as well as the plume from the Quebec fire. Last night we had a wind shift and it gave us an hour of clear skies and sun before the plume returned. Luckily our local fire is right beside a river and is under control, but ...
And do we need rain!
Green leaves, please stay green!
What a fine capture of the heron. Love the reflections behind the bird and the wonderful little circle of ripples by the leg.

our spring is often brief, but this year, it seems to be lasting a bit longer. the green looks really good on you and the heron is gorgeous, what a great capture, it is one of my favorites as you know!!

The delicate greens and whites of early spring are so beautiful. I enjoy seeing yours even as ours are deepening into summer hues.
The fires are dreadful. I was glad that Nova Scotia received rain. Now we need rain in Quebec and BC to dampen the flames.
You walk along some lovely trails.

Great photos!
Two favorites: the path in the woods and the Great Blue Heron.

We are reading the news about fires raging around Canada and watching the pictures of the sky turning to yellow because of the fires. It's difficult to imagine such a disaster. It must be horrible. I just hope it will rain soon...

I'd love to be in this beautiful green forest. I may have to become your new neighbor if this heatwave doesn't ease up.
