On the trails

We have had some miserable weather again this past week with rain and high winds. Prior to this latest weather misery, we enjoyed several of the trails around the island as autumn colour began.

West of home, my husband and I walked the two new trails in Tyne Valley one day and especially enjoyed the hilly terrain of one of those trails. That trail is well groomed, without roots to slow one’s progress or to trip over.

The trails cross a number of streams

and have new bridges traversing them.

The leaves were beginning to show some autumn colour though green was the dominant colour at that time.

We bought our Coleman stove with us that day and cooked bacon and heated homemade baked beans. It was a delicious lunch with a cup of tea.

A few days later, east of home, we walked the trail at Breadalbane where a furry sentinel greeted us as she hunted for mice among the ground cover.

Puss accompanied us for a time, leading the way on occasion.

This trail has older bridges which cross streams through areas of forest which were beginning to show some fall colour.

Part of this trail is root covered and requires one’s full attention. Another section is on the Confederation Trail where the going is easy. In this more open area, the leaves have already reached their peak colour.

Along the way, we happened upon a Hairy Woodpecker, as she searched for food.

Later, we had our homemade beef stew near the entrance of the trail.

As we ate, a silk thread wafted through the air between us and a spider appeared on the thread which must have reached from the trees across the road. We watched as the breeze took the thread and its maker onto the goldenrod nearby which had gone to seed. It looked like a safe landing for the arachnid.

On the way home, we passed some Puddle Ducks in a watering hole for the cows grazing nearby. The scene depicts the peace and tranquility we enjoyed both days!

All I can say is AHhhhh, what a delightful place to walk and have a picnic. Those well tended trails really make your walk so enjoyable. Love the cozy feel of the little creeks and tree canopy.
Nice trail blazer from the Puss.

Based on what I see, Marie, I am pretty sure your Downy Woodpecker is a Hairy Woodpecker, in fact.

Relieved that the weather permitted these two delightful walks. Autumn colour, babbling brook, woodpecker, and Puddle Ducks.
'Puddle Duck' just the cutest name.

You have to get out when you can.

It's good to walk when the weather is sunny and take advantage of it. Wind and rain are in the forecast here for the next few days, along with below zero temperatures at night. You saw some pretty sights - the woodpecker and the autumn trees.

I so admire the wonderful trails you have on PEI. I appreciate the way the powers that be encourage the use of the trails with improvements like the new bridge. Really tough to pick a favorite, but I’m going to go with image #8, the section of Confederation Trail with the beautiful fall colors in the trees. Another excellent post Marie! John

It's always nice to be on a trail that allows you to gaze about a bit without having to concentrate on every step - especially when the countryside is as pleasant as your photos show. We're also just beginning to see some yellows and reds in the trees.

Everything looks so peaceful and lovely. I'm intrigued that you were able to cook the bacon and enjoy. some meals. I love the touches of fall leaves that were popping up occasionally.

What beautiful trails to walk, and a cute kitty. I was never a cat person until four years ago when my son and his wife and their two cats came to stay with me for six weeks waiting for the completion of their new home. I can’t say I was sorry to see my son and daughter-in-law leave (There were no issues, I’m just a one-man band here.), but I really missed those cats. The following year I adopted one, and tomorrow he will be with me for three years.

I enjoyed this walk with you, Marie.
I can't walk in the woods now and I miss it. I settle for watching the birds at my suet feeder and the deer crossing my yard. The Canadian Geese explode with their noise often and then I hear the flap, flap of their big wings as they change location. I love nature and will find ways to be in it.
Lovely post. Thank you so much.
