Respite

This past week was a busy one. With appointments over several days and helping a friend another day, we weren’t able to manage a walk on two days and picnics were out. Maybe next week for a picnic. It was a good week though, with many animal friends keeping us entertained in spite of some miserable weather.

The week started out with the return of two Osprey to the second nesting area near the boardwalk. We saw the two migrants sat in a tree near their nest which obviously needed repairs. One wasn’t facing our direction but the second, a male, we could easily see on a lower branch.

No wonder these amazing birds can snatch a fish right out of the water with those claws.

Chipmunks are out of torpor now and are a welcome addition to the rodents living along the boardwalk.

In Bedeque Bay, it isn’t surprising to see some Red-breasted Mergansers diving for food. The ducks always look like they need their head feathers trimmed but they are easy to identify this way.

My husband and I heard Northern Flickers over several days along the boardwalk but hadn’t seen them. Finally, after lots of time looking, I spotted this beauty high above the boardwalk.

That same day, in the salt marsh, I watched a pair of Mourning Doves, one chasing the other all around the seaweed. It is mating season after all.

Another day, we decided to walk in the rain which meant I left my camera at home. The iPhone would have to suffice if we saw anything interesting. Wouldn’t you know it, a Bald Eagle was perched in a tree above the boardwalk, in full view of all the walkers.

It was a mature eagle, scanning for movement out on the water and the area around the boardwalk. Of course, the sun tried to break through as we watched the majestic creature. And me without my camera!

The next day it was raining again, and again I left the camera home. Unbelievably, two mature Bald Eagles were in the same tree this time.

We saw them for more than an hour in the same place and they were still there when we left. People were thrilled!

My husband and I each had an encounter this week which has given us pause.

There is a new homeless shelter is Summerside which is doing great work. However, there are some people who do not use the shelter though it is well attended. Some of the homeless live deep in the woods at the end of the boardwalk. We see them sometimes walking or riding bikes  when we are there.

My husband met a man with a bike, carrying a bag. He looked to be in distress so husband asked if he was okay, did he need help. My husband suggested an ambulance, which the man refused, saying he had broken a rib and couldn’t ride his bike. He would walk instead. My husband and another man who happened along, both felt helpless, not knowing how to do better for the man. The poor man was obviously drugged and two men from his community wanted to do something but felt helpless.

My encounter was with an elderly Asian woman, an immigrant whose English was poor. Her card wouldn’t work in the bank machine at the check-out. The cashier and I, behind her in line, offered help.

I expect this woman is a more recent immigrant to this island. I wonder what circumstances led this senior to leave her previous home and some family behind to come to a foreign land and start anew in another language. All I could think is how I would feel in the same circumstances? How would I want to be treated? I offered help.

The world can be a hard place and we often feel helpless to do much about it. However, we can offer a kind word and give of ourselves to those we meet in our daily lives. Nature will be our respite.

That's a terrific close-up of the osprey. You and your husband are kind souls to those needing help.

It's good of you to offer kindness to incomers and to imagine yourself in their place. And I wonder if the eagles are thinking of nesting there? That could be exciting.

great pictures of the bald eagles. They look pretty good considering they were taken with your iPhone. Sometimes all you can do is offer to help, which I think is a pretty big deal.

You got some lovely close ups.
It was kind of you and your husband to help these individuals.

It is good of you to be human and humane and desire to help.

As for walks, you do have great choices, and you see much. We are pretty well confined to the usual town routes. We have also found that walking in spring is more difficult in spring in some respects. In winter we usually don our warm garments and go, but spring can very well be rainy or very windy or both.

I like the previous comment about continuing to lead with your heart. Sometimes just offering to help is all one can do.
Love the photos of the Bald Eagles. What treasures. I hope there is a nest and new offsprings in the future.

There is a pair of ospreys nesting on the pole nest at the baseball diamond where my son plays in the "oldtimers" league. They used to nest on the floodlights until a proper nest platform was built for them. I hope the homeless man was OK and got the help he needed, and the Asian lady too. You never know when you may need help yourself.

Marie what gorgeous pictures of the Eagle and Osprey and Flicker. We do not have Osprey near us but we are beginning to see Eagles more often in our area. In fact one flew over our hill last fall while we were out sitting with friends. Glorious sight. Yes, sometimes the kindest thing we can do for others is to smile and at least offer our help. I like you cannot imagine what it must be like to live in a place that doesn't speak our language or for that matter to be homeless. God bless you for caring. Have a delightful week. Hugs!

Beautiful photos of the birds, Marie. Offering help to those who need it is a great gesture of love and kindness. That's all you can do. Have a wonderful new week.

Marie, I enjoyed all your photos, especially the Eagles. You did great with your iPhone. Regarding your encounters … You and your husband showed true compassion. Even when we can't solve someone's situation, offering kindness and a helping hand can make a real difference. It's a good reminder that small acts of care matter, especially in a world that often feels overwhelming. John

Thank you and your husband for reaching out to help. We need more people like you.
I love your eagle shots - and of course you didn't have your camera. You did well anyway.

Many of these people wish more than anything to be independent. Our family emigrated to Canada about 1900. Since there were many of them they were not isolated by language. One or two of them could speak English so helped all the others.

What a beautifully reflective post! You’ve captured both the small joys and the profound moments in such a thoughtful way. The encounters with the animals, like the Northern Flickers and Bald Eagles, really bring a sense of awe to the everyday. I can almost feel the majesty of the eagles and the wonder of nature despite the rainy days. And your reflections on the homeless man and the elderly woman were so heartwarming—sometimes, kindness in simple forms can make such a difference. Thank you for sharing these intimate moments; it's a wonderful reminder to appreciate the small things and the people around us.

Hello Marie :)
What a delightful assortment of nature protos. Lovely capture of the sweet Chipmunk, Osprey, Red-breasted Mergansers, Northern Flicker, and Bald Eagles, which seem to have chosen a place to build a nest. Bravo for your kindness and your husbands concern for the needy.
All the best
Sonjia.

Kindness should never be taken for granted as you have well shown, Marie. The encounter with the injured man and with the woman in the supermarket were reminders that we can all be kind even if the individual doesn't acknowledge the gesture. One should always strive to be kind.

As for as those eagle sightings, you did well with the phone images. I also hesitate on taking any photo equipment out on a dismal weather day. Even though I own an all weather camera, the zoom range would not have been good enough for an eagle capture high up in tree.

what a beautiful entry for today...in so many ways. what a great day to be out and about with the birds and elements. what a reward of lovely birds you have photographed!! i have found myself and my husband has also with situations of people in need of help, we always acknowledge it. one time the woman in line ahead of us at the food store had forgotten her checkbook and was not able to pay for a basket load of groceries that had already been scanned and bagged. we paid for her order, she took our address and mailed us the money, she insisted. other times, we have just helped people with their shortfall. it kinda' feels good to be put in those situations, not everyone is in a position to help, we are!!

If it weren’t for Mother Nature, how would we heal ourselves from this chaotic world! I’m glad the rain doesn’t keep you from going out-n-about, even without your camera. We’ve gotten so used to our iPhone cameras by now that we don’t even carry or big-girl cameras anymore. So glad you had YOUR iPhone! And so glad that your acts of kindness are important to you!!!

That is a fantastic picture of the chipmunk. He almost looks like he’s posing for a passport photo. Great sighting the eagles. Compassion when folks are in need of help is wonderful to see.

With those eagles the chipmunks don't stand much of a chance. Nice walk. I do think about living in a foreign country you don't speak or read the language and are unfamiliar with the food. I am sure your kindness helped to make her day.
Homeless I just read an article that Canada is having the same housing crisis as the US. But of course addiction does not help anything.

Wonderful photos of the creatures you have encountered! Hopefully the sun starts making more of an appearance.
I try to remember that I can't know what is happening in another person's life. I'm glad you were able to help the woman at the bank machine, and do hope the distressed man is willing to accept help when needed.

Hello Marie,
Wonderful captures of the Osprey, Eagles, the Mergansers and the Flicker. The Doves are sweet. I love the pretty views of the beach and water. Kudos for your acts of kindness! Take care, have a great day!

Your observation of your animal friends makes poor weather brighter. Wonderful captures of the business of spring for these creatures. I do hope this week's weather has been brighter. I recently read this - "The smallest act of kindness is worth more than the greatest intention."

Beautiful photos, Marie. I love the Mergansers with their wild hair. We see them here, too
Kindness never comes amiss and it seems that these days there are more and more bewildered people (for various reasons). I'm glad you and your husband offered help to those you met.

Enchanting photos of osprey and bald eagles dear Marie 👍🥰♥️

I really enjoyed every step of this walk 🤗
Despite weather is being stubborn you guys managed to take your regular walk which is impressive indeed 👌😊

Appearance of seasonal birds and how they decorate your surroundings with their voices is pure pleasure 🥰♥️
Your ending para is heartwarming my friend 🥹🙏
Yes in nature we see how everything is well connected and helps each other to grow in harmony. Even physical laws point out that harmony awesomely,in a wall each brick supports the other one .without supporting each other we can not survive. You spent your days offering help those who need it because you felt yourself in their shoes immediately.this is true success of an existence my friend.
This is best gift ever 🥹♥️🥰🙏

I completely agree with you: everyone should, above all, pay attention to the people they meet, show understanding and respect, and help in times of need.
Your hikes are beautiful, as is the birdlife you captured. Sweet chipmunk, a particularly beautiful photo.
Thank you and all the best.

Marie your photos are stunning, the chipmunk is so cute. I feel helpless when I see people living on the streets. But it's the genuine immigrants I wish I could do more for. To leave your homeland behind in the hope of finding a better life takes a lot of courage.

Thank you both for trying to help. Like you I incline to the view that, given different life circumstances, it could easily be me in need of help.
Our local rugby team is named the Ospreys although the bird is not a resident in these parts. Apparently there are four breeding pairs in the whole of Wales.
Love chipmunks.

I like your fox photo. I used to see a young fox in my backyard often, but not for about a year now.... I suppose he has moved on to a more successful hunting area. Picnic season has started, I haven't done one yet but soon. It's supposed to be 25C tomorrow, that's definitely picnic weather.
