One of the environmental highlights for us this past week on Prince Edward Island was a calm day, without any wind, when the sea and sky became one. On such a day, the horizon disappears and different elements are indistinguishable.
I wonder what the cormorant sees when it looks around?
Our family went camping this past weekend, so my husband and I had the golden grand-dog for a few days. Those days included a visit to the beach at Mont Carmel. Daisy can be off-lead there as few people frequent the beach. She loves to fetch a ball out of the water.
It was a calm day and local cottagers were enjoying water sports . Paddle boards, Sea-doos,
and a hydrofoil provided hours of entertainment for the cottagers and those watching.
Other days we walked on trails where other walkers were obvious in the distance and Daisy could run free before they approached. Unfettered, she runs ahead and stops periodically waiting for the seniors to catch up.
We know it was a successful outing with Daisy if she is tired afterwards. A tired dog is a good dog.
Nature provided hours of entertainment this past week as the parade of wildflowers continues along the trails. Along the Confederation Trail, fireweed is resplendent in some areas.
Queen Anne’s lace dominates in places though the two are usually not together.
In the fields, some potato plants are in blossom already while others have some growing yet to do.
A wheat field that borders the Confederation Trail looks to have benefitted from the rain we’ve had recently.
Along the boardwalk, the wildflowers are doing well. Yarrow
and St. John’s wort grow beside the trail and brighten the days with their colour.
At more than a metre high, wild roses and vetch attract bees. We stopped to watch the bees among the roses as we could hear their collective buzz.
Another interesting sight this past week was a swarm of flies we suspect were midges. They are visible in the photo below
and a close-up is better than I thought it would be. We were lucky they weren’t biting.
I was fortunate to see a Great Blue Heron fishing in the salt marsh one day.
Another fortunate photo was the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker with a beak full of pin cherries before it entered the nest to feed its young.
Finally this week, one evening, just after dark, we passed a young fox out hunting. It was near a wheat field where the hunting is good. The fox wasn’t afraid of us when we rolled down the window to photograph it.
Our encounters and experiences in nature continue to brighten our days and keep us moving.

It looks like grand puppy had a grand time with you and Rick this week.
Absolutely wonderful pictures, every last one. Thank you for the eye candy feast. Love seeing Daily looking happy like that.
Love all your wildflower shots!
Love the endless serenity! Your wildflowers are beautiful. Colorful thick patches really stand out. That is a crazy swarm! I wonder what causes/ed them.
Your grand pup is such a joy!!
The fireweed is such a wonderful colour. We saw a lot of Queens Anne this morning on our walk, some of it past her best. We also spotted a heron, but is was not in good surroundings like yours.
Pretty pictures! Thank you for sharing them with us.
the grand doggy looks very happy, it is always a joy to watch a dog frolic in water. speaking of water, how do those kids stay up on those boards. the wild flowers are lovely, the fireweed is so pretty, i love the color!! it is amazing how wild flower thrive, with no love from us. nice to see you toay....have a great week!!
Delightful times in your part of the world. I love all the critters you photographed... but, oh my on those flies...yikes... great picture though.
I miss our "granddogger" a lot. its been 3 years since she's been gone. She used to be playful like your Golden. Ours was a labradoodle.

Blessed are you my dear Marie to experience such enchanting transformation in the nature 😍👍
Splendour of your iconic island is like I am in the fantasy land wow🤗
Everything so beautiful so vibrant and bursting with freshly breathing life 🥹
Magical indeed 🥰😍♥️
Continuous joy and happiness to you and yours ♥️♥️♥️🙏
Fun with the granddog is always a wonderful pleasure.
Exceptionally captured and presented 'July beauty'!
Happy hours wih the exuberant, Daisy on perfect summer days, surrounded by lush meadows and wildflowers.
I loved the fireweed. I'm partial to the purple/lavender colors but usually end up going with white. I think because they show up so well in the moonlight.
You have a nice variety if critters, plants and scenery.
I would love to visit your area.
Wonderful photos! The lack of horizon would be disconcerting for me.
Lovely views of the water! Daisy is a beautiful dog. You are so right, a tired dog is a good dog. The wildflowers are gorgeous. I love the shots of the Heron and Sapsucker and the fox.
There have been complaints in parts of Maryland about the midges, why are there so many? Take care, have a great day and happy week!
Right now has to be the best time on the island. Daisy looks like she is having the time of her life. Glad to see that she can be off leash and having fun!
So many gorgeous photos! Daisy looks so happy. We will be taking care of our grand cat at the end of the month but of course we will not be taking her outdoors. Great shot of the fox.
What a lovely post full of so many wonderful PEI blessings!! How i wish I could join in on the walks and views there, but wonderful to do it virtually! You captured the midgets oh my!! And all the wildlife - what a blessing!
Marie as always I so enjoy my visits to your part of the world...your photos are breathtaking...amazing picture of the fox. Ours here are generally red or gray...this one looks like it has black markings. Yes nature does brighten our days...I think your grand-dog would too. Hugs!
I never cease to be amazed at the number of people who walk and profess not to see anything. Do they walk with eyes closed?
The sea and sky dissolved as one,
No breeze, no line—just light and sun.
Mont Carmel’s beach, a quiet delight,
With Daisy dashing left and right.
The golden grand-dog raced the shore,
Fetching waves and begging more.
She watched, no doubt, with canine pride
As humans skimmed the glassy tide—
Sea-doos, paddlers in graceful toil,
And one bold soul on a hydrofoil!
Wildflowers thrived where feet had passed—
Queen Anne’s lace and fireweed massed.
St. John’s wort brightened trailside bends,
While buzzing bees made floral friends.
A heron fished with patient grace,
A fox slipped by with stealthy pace.
From sapsucker high with cherry loot
To wheat fields ripe with rain-fed fruit—
Each scene a gift, each walk a song,
Where days feel calm and never long.
And Daisy, home with tail a-wag,
Sleeps the sleep of a dog well-tagged.
So thank you, friend, for scenes you share—
For hydrofoils and island air.
These simple joys, so rich and true,
Bring July's beauty close to view.
John
PS Sorry for the delete and repost. I left the hydrofoil out of the first version when creating. 😊
Isn't nature a delight?! Pretty flowers, but ixnay on the midges...they seem to be prominent here lately and I'm guessing it is all the rain we have had.
Hello Marie :) Thank you for your welcoming visit and nice comment, and thank you for sharing what you see on your outings which are always delightful images. Your grand dog looks so happy off leach, and the wild flowers are beautiful but I would be uneasy walking past those huge clouds of midges, good shots however. Good views of the yellow Bellied Sap sucker, heron and fox. The fox looks like it has at one time had a band around its hind quarters!
All the best
Sonjia.
John, do you think in verse? You make it look so easy and as one who writes similar poems, though not as good, for family occasions, I know it is not easy at all.
He’s one whose thoughts appear in verse.
In words appropriate and terse.
They appear to flow with ease
Like an island day with a summer breeze.
Thank you, John! I loved the last one but this one even more.
Marie
Marie,
I love the question and thank you for your kind words. Let me share my process: 1. On your computer, open two windows. In one of them, open the post to be commented upon. In the other window, open a word app. Reading through the post make some notes in the word app about specific items in the post. Next, settle into “verse” mode. 😊 This is where things slow down as you try to consider all the rhyming possibilities. When you run into roadblocks and can’t think of a good rhyme, ask Google for all possible rhyming words. This will frequently lead to a complete change of several verses, given words you hadn’t considered. When happy with the result, copy and paste into the comment box on blogger. Or, let me say it this way …
Two windows open side by side,
One for notes, where thoughts abide.
The other waits for verse to flow—
A rhyming dance, both swift and slow.
When rhymes resist or lines misfire,
A search for words may soon inspire.
Then once the poem feels just right,
It's pasted in—your comment light.
John 😊
I always enjoy my visits here to see what's happening on the other side of the country. How lovely the ocean is for water play when it's flat and calm. The heron is so elegant looking, and the flowers beautiful. We are so blessed to live in such a beautiful country.
Looks wonderfully serene.
Those first pictures are remarkable - there really is no horizon. I really like them.
Cheers - Stewart M - Melbourne
He's a bold and rather curious fox. There is a Great Blue Heron who regularly fishes for dinner at the pond where I live. It's amazing watching him (or her?) stand for ages then suddenly pick a little fish out of the water and swallow it fast.
All those horrid midges! Beautiful Daisy.
We have fireweed but I don't think we call it that. I'll have to check.
Absolutely stunning photos! Wow!
Beautiful photographs and I loved them all, but my favourite was the Rose Bay Willow Herb's pink spires..who'd think a weed could be so beautiful.
Hi Chris,
The plant is commonly known here as fireweed. Willow Herb sounds so much prettier. Thank you for sharing this lovely name.
Lots of flowers we recognize, but we're not far enough north for Fireweed.
Being around dogs always makes things better. I really miss having a dog because I am a dog person, but it’s just not the right time in my life.
Aww.. such a pleasant outing, gorgeous views...
When I walk in the park and I see midges, I have to wear a mask.
Daisy is a beautiful dog and probably lots of fun to have on the trail. Love the wildflower photos!!
Wonderful photos! Your summer looks perfect.
