For the girls...
Some of them are hard to see,
You hear them pecking at the tree.
Others are tiny, black and tan,
They take the seeds right from your hand.
The mourning dove has a lonely coo,
The way a pidgeon does it too.
But best of all is the pretty jay
Tipping its head as it flies away.
Can anyone name the species of bird in the first photo?

I don't know but all the pictures are neat.
It's a thrill when they take the seeds right from your hand.
Hi! Is it a woodpecker? I love the bossy bluejays when they swoop down for food. But my favorite is the mourning doves...they are so shy and sluggish and I love the coos they make! Andrea
I LOVE the sound of mourning doves. :)
The only woodpecker I know is the red-headed woodpecker but that's not one of them. Delightful little poem, by the way.
I love taking pictures of the birds, always a challenge with them.
It really is. The chickadees are the only ones who do that now. The jays are getting braver though.
The doves are among my favourite as well. Each time a photograph a different bird though, it becomes my new favourite.
I love the cooing sound as well. They sound mellowed out somehow.
I love to write poems for the girls.
I suspect that bird is a northern three-toed woodpecker but I'm not sure.
Your bird has a woodpecker beak, but it's not one I'm familiar with. Great shot, by the way. I've had chickadees eat seed that fell around my feet, but I haven't tried enticing one to my hand.
Chickadees will often eat from one's hand apparently. Brave little creatures!
I love all your pretty birds, and the poem is fun, too. I also cannot recognize the woodpecker species. Those cheeky little chickadees will eat from your hand once they get to know you. :-)
Feathered enchantment.
I would guess at a woodpecker of some sort, but all of your birds are exotic to me.
Isn't it a privilege to hand feed a wild bird?
The birds along the boardwalk are a wonder!
It truly is a privilege! The chickadees are beautiful and so trusting.
I am not close to being an expert but it looks like it might be a yellow-shafted Northern flicker. Whatever it is it sure is a beauty.
It blended in with the tree. It might be that flicker. Thank you.
