Sea sculpture

Thunder Cove on the north shore of Prince Edward Island is a place of wonder. A sandy beach stretches out before you

and at low tide, beach goers are washed in the gentle waves as they venture onto the sand bars.

Of course, the waves are not always gentle.

Part of the shoreline is lined with Marram grass-covered sand dunes.

However, the shoreline is elevated along a major portion of this coastline and cliffs consist of layers of sand and sandstone.

The sea has eroded this shoreline by its tidal action plus high seas and created curious sea sculptures.

There are numerous caves

and holes at sea level,

sea arches

and sea stacks.

The sea stack above from a different angle.

There is something beautiful but unusual about the area,

as if you were transported to a red planet. The sand in the formations is obvious in areas close to the shoreline,

while in the cliff face, the sand has turned to stone.

The rock falls,

cliffs and formations make a sea sculpted world which leaves one awestruck!

What a beautiful long sand beach! Those sculptures are stunning! It must have been a long time to form those figures.

What you call sea stacks on the coast, we call hoodoos here in the west. Spectacular either way!

That last photo is best of all. :)

Unfortunately that middle photo of the single bit of rock with water on all sides reminded me of the destruction at the National Park in the West.

Definitely beautiful. And magical.

The beach is long and isn't crowded. It is a wonderful place to relax. Sandstone erodes so easily, it wouldn't take long to form the stacks.

It is an incredible place, Jan.

Hoodoos are beautiful as well. Erosion creates such beauty sometimes.

I really didn't know that this kind of shoreline existed in PEI.

It isn't well known. We need better advertising!

Amazing isn't it. I would have been brave enough when I was young to visit those caves but not anymore. I also love the stacks... I love them all.

We have a friend from our Shutterchance photoblog, Marie, who lives on PEI and often shows the shoreline like this. I am awestruck by its beauty! You have shown some spectacular images here...especially the last one. WOW.

Those natural sea sculptures are amazing we don't have anything quite like that! Sarah x

I am not brave enough to go inside those caves either, Barbara. I think those things are braved by the young. I love the stacks too.

The last one is spectacular. It is a breath taker for sure!

I guess the rock in your shoreline is harder than the sandstone here, Sarah. The sea sculpture is beautiful.
