A new trail at Bonshaw

On a recent visit to Bonshaw Park, my husband and I walked the new trail called Howel’s Hallow. This trail is well constructed and a great addition to the trail system at Bonshaw where 20 kilometres of such trails await visitors.

It was a hot humid day but the breeze made it bearable. The new trail is great for mountain biking as well so in areas, it has waves and berms which make the walking interesting too.

The trail crosses one stream, then  meanders down to the West River and loops back.

The new boardwalk made the going easy in some areas.

Ferns were luscious, catching the light occasionally through windows in the trees.

We noticed several types of mushrooms, the most obvious among them, the Orange-gilled Waxcap.

Lungwort, a lichen, was well established on this tree

while bunchberries were available for picking. These bland berries are a good addition to other berries for jam.

We sat on a bench by the West River and listened as the sound of the water-filled hollow created by nature.

A few deep breaths later and we continued on the loop.

Nature takes back what she gives as moss covers the fallen trees in one area.

Though we didn’t see or hear them, Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers had been busy along the way.

Headed back through a meadow to the car, we passed these beauties,

smiling through the grasses into the glorious sun. Perfect.

Per usual I enjoyed all of your photos but I thought the one with the boardwalk was especially well done. You took it so that it showed the contrast of what had been there for years and the new addition ... both picturesque.

My goodness, those Sapsuckers were really busy...they must have found a really choice tree.
Love the daisy photo too.
What a beautiful new trail for you and great photos ...I can almost hear the gurgling creek.

Miss the sound of water running, we are in a drought right now and our creeks are dry. What a lovely place you are in.

That looks like a great trail to walk, except perhaps for going around those bends!

It's good that they develop new trails. I hope they are kept up so that they are used for many years.

Your new trail is set in a landscape that looks so much like ours, especially with those ferns. For a moment there, I wondered if you had swapped countries!

It's great that you have trails like these to explore - one thing I've learned from blogging is that not everyone has a network of paths like I'm able to enjoy in the UK.

Howel can be a Welsh name. I wonder if that's where the name comes from.

I don't think we have bunchberries but I love the waxcap.

Bonshaw is always perfect, except when mosquitoes decide to join the walk.
You describe it beautifully.

Hi Marie, Although I’ve been a resident of the US Pacific Northwest most of my life, I’ve had a long time interest in the Eastern Seaboard of North America, and especially Canada’s Atlantic provinces. My first and only visit to PEI was in 2019 and I was so impressed with the beauty of the Island. I feel lucky to have found your excellent blog. You just do a great job taking us along and showing us parts of the Island I would want to visit myself if I lived there. This post is an excellent example. I have to say it would be hard to find a trail here around Seattle as nicely constructed as the one through Bonshaw Park. Now, in recent days I’ve thought about you when seeing the media coverage of a storm headed for the Eastern Seaboard. It appears to land on the coast of Connecticut on Sunday and some of the future tracks take a much-weakened storm over PEI and Newfoundland, possibly next Wednesday. If the storm does make it to your area I hope you will not experience any negative effects.

What a lovely place to walk, Marie. Anywhere near the sound of water is so peaceful in the forest. I hope you are not too badly affected by the tropical storm.
