Bubbling Springs

It doesn’t look like anything special when you first come upon it, a wetland area on a trail in the National Park at Brackley on Prince Edward Island. Yet a storyboard nearby refers to water bubbling up from sandstone bedrock.

My husband and I stood looking over the water for several minutes and spotted fish, not bubbles. I read the sign again and scanned the bottom. On second look, we saw them, bubble-like eruptions, spread over a number of locations!

There is groundwater among the sandstone bedrock on the island. If pressure is sufficient, the water will bubble to the surface through fractures in the sandstone. The result is a natural spring. This spring must have been a wonderful find for the people who originally farmed this land. It looks like the spring was walled at one time.

My husband took a short video of the bubbling. You can see it here. Did you see the fish too?

We sat for a time and enjoyed the rare 13 degree Celsius day.

The remnants of a tree standing on the edge of the spring became the focus, with its stubs of cut branches.

How old was it and how much longer could it last here on the edge?

Later we had a picnic lunch near the entrance to the Bubbling Springs Trail. This time, we’d brought our stove to cook lean bacon and heat homemade baked beans.

It was a delicious lunch on a lovely fall day. We will take the stove again and have hot food on colder days to extend our picnic season this year.

As for the Bubbling Springs, we will be back!

It is interesting seeing the stoned wall under water. The bench has a pretty view. Your hot lunch idea sounds great. Happy Friday, enjoy your weekend!

Now that's an impressive picnic setup you had there. Love the bubbling spring and fish. Almost forgot about the old stump, I love it. Have a great weekend.

Is the water warm? And too, I was wondering how you packed all that stuff in. Must have been quite a load.

Mage,

We didn’t touch the water. Spring water here is usually cold. It’s not good to assume anything I know. Next visit, I’ll touch it and remember you asked about it.

Our car was near the picnic table since we had lunch by the entrance of the trail not by the spring.

Hey, I had a Coleman stove like that. It was well used as I had it just a little over 40 years.

Great to see those bubbling springs. One of my local bird reserves is based around an area where water bubbles up from the chalk and forms the tiny rivers you may have seen on my blog.

MGH,

The fish is at the end of the video.

Boy, you people really know how to picnic, bringing a cook stove with you. That is genius! What a lovely spot. That water is so clear, and I have a fondness for aquatic life.

That video reminds me of a spot in Yellowstone called the mud pots. It would be interesting to know if there is any heat in there.

these little springs are intriguing dear Marie ,so true about the pressure .i just read in a book about astrophysics in which it was mentioned that all the spherical shape from bubble to planets and largest bodies floating in space were possible because of " sufficient" pressure :)

how nice to have stove along on picnic specially when it is cold and having warm coffee or food is luxury indeed :)
more blessings to you and family!

I could not spot the fish though I watched twice. I will go back again later. Your lunch sounds wonderful.
