It has been an extremely cold winter and the high winds haven’t helped. This coming week, temperatures will be near normal or above which will be a great respite from the bitter cold of the last few months. Despite the cold however, we are drawn to the stark beauty of the boardwalk.
There is an area along the boardwalk which the birds and squirrels love. They forage for seeds there, under the trees alongside the walkway. On days when the wind is calmer the place comes alive with the animals. The last day we were there, three squirrels chased each other around as numerous Bluejays made their presence known.
One had mastered the chattering sound of a squirrel which it repeated as it flew among the trees.
Sparrows are common there too. Tree Sparrows hop around
and Song Sparrows, which fill the boardwalk with song in the spring and summer, are quiet this time of year.
If you stop along the bridge, you can expect Black-capped Chickadees to come around. They have flown around me as I’ve attempted to photograph them. My husband likens them to mosquitos.
On our recent visit to Cape Egmont,
we passed an old house with something in an upper window on the side facing the road. I didn’t know what was in that window since we drove by so quickly but we decided to go back that way to see it.
The front of the house doesn’t give any indication of the resident visible on the side.
Someone added a bear to one of the upstairs window.
Despite the condition of the house, we smiled when we saw the bear and wondered about the old house. The old place has a new life.
The last few days of February are upon us. Spring is on its way.
Have a great week!

Marie, you do a great job capturing how amazing nature can be. Despite the cold, ice, snow, and wind, the wildlife looks so healthy and seems to have no concern about the conditions. Enjoy the week ahead with warmer temperatures. Thank you for sharing your blog! John
That bear has a pretty fancy hibernation spot!
Oh my, I think I would drive back by too and see what the heck was in the window!
Wonderful pictures, as always. Love the bear!
I like chickadees too much to accept your hubby’s comparison. 😀
That abandoned house is great.
Love the view of the lighthouse.
Love the Jay, the Sparrows and the Chickadee.
The bear made me smile, cute.
Take care, have a wonderful week!
Too funny! Obviously the interior stairs are in good enough condition for someone to climb up to put the bear in the window.
I'm happy to hear the weather is improving - it is in Saskatchewan as well, which makes me pleased too. Love the shot of the blue jay and the squirrel!
It makes me happy how you and your hubby keep exploring the beauty of winter dear Marie 😯😍♥️
Your do magic to put extra life in any scene 🥰
I loved the board image ! Snow is laced it out
The squirrel and birds playing together on the snow look really awesome 👌😘
Rusted house in the wilderness seems poetic ♥️

Interesting place to see a bear!
I love the abandoned house, it has character and now a bear. :)
Wow these photos are so beautiful! You perfectly captured the magic of winter. We haven't been outside much this winter but we just had a new gate latch put in on the fence in our backyard so we are looking forward to spending more time out there once it warms up. Thanks for sharing!!!
I would be too lazy to leave the warmth of my home. Thank you for braving the cold and taking these marvelous photos.
Beautiful images of PEI in February. Chickadees are such sweet birds; I would never think of them as mosquitoes! The old house has character on its own and now a new bit of interest with the stuffed bear.
So glad it's beginning to be warmer. It's been a cold winter. Chickadees are among my favorites. Cheeky little fellows.
Our winter, very much milder, almost benign in comparison, is coming to an end and I see your photos and realise that as much as I resent the cold it is not as intense or as deep as your winters.
Oh I just love that picture with the old house and the bear in the window :) Someone has humour!!
Great pictures, as always on your blog....
Lots of love from Titti
Someone with a great sense of humor must live nearby! Your header is absolutely stunning. I think it's my favorite one that I've ever seen. Have a great weekend.
beautiful images today, thanks for freezing so we could enjoy them. we have had the coldest february in many years, very high winds also. i adore the picture of the lighthouse and the bear gave me a good chuckle, thanks for going back to photograph it!! i really like the old house, i wish someone could give it some tlc and bring it back to it's glory days!!
Hello Marie. :)
Lovely captures of the birds and squirrels. The bear in the window made me smile.
What a lovely reflection on the beauty of winter and the small joys found in nature! Your description of the boardwalk, even in the cold, brings a sense of tranquility and appreciation for the wildlife around you. It sounds like a perfect spot to observe the interactions of the birds and squirrels, especially with the Bluejays making themselves known. The image of the chickadees buzzing around like little mosquitoes is delightful!
I love how you found a bit of whimsy in the old house with the bear in the window. It adds a layer of character to the place and invites curiosity about its history. It’s fascinating how something so simple can brighten your day and spark your imagination about the stories the house might hold.
As February comes to a close and spring approaches, there’s a sense of renewal in the air.
Marie you certainly are an artist with your gorgeous photos. What an amazing shot of the squirrel and the blue jay together. We have more gray squirrels here than we used to but of course our red ones remain. The bear in the house certainly made me smile. There is something about an old abandoned place that makes me wonder how it once was full of life and why it was not kept up. Bet there is a good story about this house. Well stay warm and yes spring is on its way!
Love the bear in the window. Sort of look like an house one of my great great uncle built.
Amazing photos, Marie. Winter has such stark beauty.
That house photo is like a Wyeth painting...although I doubt he would have had a bear in his painting!
It's been an unusual winter for us here, too. Love your pictures and commentary, and the picture of the bear in the window of the old home! Yes, spring is on the way!
Marie, you often say you can't imagine how I walk in our hot, humid temperatures, but I ask the same of you and Rick in that extreme, bitter cold. Very thankful that you do. These images fill me with amazement. I had seen the bear in the window on a PEI page and have shared it. To see your very first image and know that I stood with you there in October, is just amazing. The scene is so vastly different!
I am always taken away with your photos of nature, but today the old house inspires me. As a writer, I look for objects that create mystery, a question, or empathy. This old house is definitely a subject for writing.
Yes really funny with the bear in the window upstairs.I think all your images are very beautiful.Soon spring will come to you too💖
Well, that was not the kind of bear I was anticipating! But it's a good one!
Cheers - Stewart M - Melbourne
Wow! Your photos have caught the epitome of winter. The little birds and squirrels are so cute in the snow. The bear in the window does make one smile.
Love seeing your pics of the birdies. Nice....but that house, oh my gosh, I love it.
Someone has a delightful, whimsical sense of humour.
That old house is the coolest! I love coming across things like that. I think it’s such fun that they put something in the window. That will give you something to watch over the weeks to come.
That large bear toy in the window of the old house was funny, Marie, and it does make you wonder how it got there and who placed it. Looks like it's still very chilly and wintry like in your area, thankfully, we have had some melting here.
