Boundless

A few weeks ago, a fellow blogger*

https://pattietierney.blogspot.com asked about the most unusual thing my husband and I have seen on our walks around the island. After giving it some thought, and talking with my husband about it, we decided the most unusual thing is a horizonless sky.

Such a sky occurs when, due to atmospheric conditions, sea/land and sky blend together and appear as one. Fog can cause such conditions, sometimes resulting in a white out or a scene like below:

I photographed this shot from Cabot Beach on setting day in 2018, as the fishing boats headed out to set their lobster pots for the season. A light on Fish Island hangs in the air as a bird flies above it all.

Snow can do the same as we see here on Prince Edward Island when drifts of snow cross the open fields.

So, we see horizonless skies periodically but the most unusual one was this shot of two fishing boats headed out Bedeque Bay in Summerside in April of 2017. The sea was calm and the cloudless sky reflected in the water. The wake of the boats disturbed the surface of the water behind them. But ahead…

To me, the scene is a symbol. The world ahead of the boaters is boundless, with endless possibilities and opportunities. Into the unknown they go, trusting in their experience, training and skill to handle what’s ahead. We are the boaters.

What do you see?

*Pattie’s blog features a wonderful combination of amazing table settings for every occasion, recipes, personal stories and beautiful photographs. The blog is an oasis in a troubled world. Check it out!

P.S.

I choose to see the world this way. The reality of the threats we face in the world today can be overwhelming. I am aware but choose to focus on a better future and work towards it.

Hello, Marie
Your photos and the scenes are beautiful.
I agree with your words about having a better future.
Take care, have a great day and happy week ahead.

That’s wonderful. I know a photographer who does seascapes something like this as fine art. He will take an ordinary photo and work with it until he creates what he wants.

Wonderful photos, and a great outlook on life. We've seen horizonless skies occasionally and I find them mysterious and a bit disconcerting. My eye constantly seeks that line.

Wonderful photos! It's a perspective few people who live in landlocked areas ever see. I'm trying to recall if I've seen anything like it on a cruise, and it would have to be when we were in the heavy fog off the California coast. We come close when we're in a white-out due to heavy snow too.

Yes ... I choose to look forward and focus on what's ahead. It is not always easy but that's my goal.
Your horizonless photos ate stunning. I think that the "Flat-Earth" people might think these photos prove their point. (:0)
Have a wonderful week and stay warm.

That is awesome, it would be hard not to take for granted, I am happy to read that you do not.

Love these images, Marie. I imagine you see the horizonless skies quite often, but in different forms. Each time equally uplifting. A couple of years ago we were with the Grandees at Fort Amherst midmorning, and witnessed a similar thing with the fog across the harbour and 2 sailing boats drifting through.

Focusing on limitless possibilities is a good attitude, Marie. I especially liked these shots especially the first one. The world is in turmoil, but that does mean I have to follow suit. Thanks too for the birthday wishes, much appreicated.

The horizonless sky is an interesting phenomenon. That light tower appears to be floating in mid-air!!

I never would have thought of a horizonless view as the most unusual thing you see. As someone who does not live on PEI I can think of several unusual thing you enjoy compared to the rest of us - like your boardwalk, your various sorts of fishing boats, your icebreaker. All pretty unusual to me!

What a beautiful and thoughtful reflection, Marie. Your “horizonless” skies are both haunting and hopeful—especially in the second picture, where sky and sea seem to merge into pure possibility. I love how you connect that image to life’s journey… quietly brave, trusting, and full of grace. Thank you for sharing such gentle wisdom and wonder. John

I loved your description of how such views are formed 🥰
