Eagles’ wings

We haven’t seen the resident Bald Eagles around the boardwalk for a number of weeks since Bedeque Bay froze solid. I look forward to seeing the birds when spring thaw opens the bay again. However, I have some Eagle photos to share today, photos I took in June of 2018.

Our daughter picked up the girls from school that day and headed to her favourite fishing spot with the three children. We went along to enjoy some outdoor time with the children. As always, I had my camera, though I planned on human photos only.

We were just setting up our chairs and snacks when a Bald Eagle flew over with a huge fish carried in its claws…Sea Bass from the nearby bay.

I missed that photo but was pleasantly surprised when the bird landed on a tree stump on the opposite side of the pond. My small Nikon camera was not meant for such a distance, but I clicked away regardless.

The photos aren’t great but you can see what transpired when the Eagle called its mate and then refused to share its meal.

The bird was thoroughly enjoying the meal and held it with its claws against the stump on which it was standing.

The Eagle stopped briefly to call to its mate who arrived within minutes. The new arrival watched for some time as the other bird consumed the fish without an offer to share the food.

Then, the fish fell out of the Eagle’s grip

and the bird promptly picked it up and turned away slightly from its mate.

I stopped the camera for a few minutes. When I took photos again, the birds were ‘arguing’ over the fish.

I wasn’t prepared for this final shot.

The one that got away!

Meanwhile, this was the scene here last week.

Have a good one!

What an awesome series of eagle activity to watch & photograph!! For me, it is more about capturing the moment than taking the "perfect" photo. Well done!

I am a wee bit envious even if you are missing them right now.

Beautiful series. ❤️ Thank you so much for sharing, I don't see sights like this here in Montreal.

I've read that Bald Eagles mainly live on fish they catch, so if the bay is frozen, no eagles!

Hello Marie,
Awesome series on the Eagles and the fish! What a meal, he could have shared the meal with the mate. The last scene is beautiful.
Take care, enjoy your day and the new week ahead.

Oh wow.. you got some great shots. We encountered a few pelicans in Florida that fought over a fish.. they both had a tug of war.

Nature is raw and wild, isn't it! And so incredibly beautiful and amazing. Loved the shots of the eagle that you captured! And the beauty of the bay frozen in. Before long, spring will arrive, hard to believe how fast the year has flown by!

Loving that golden sand, I miss it. Looks like you did really well with your camera, normally I'm not as quick with mine in getting close ups of birds.

Loved the story pics of the eagle. You did well to get all of that. And it is a fine thing to know that the snow will go and the birds will come back. We have the winter birds here, madly feeding as it is really cold today.

Marie, even with your small camera, this was an amazing series of shots of the eagles and the refusal to share the catch was amazing to see.

Marie, How wonderful for the children to see nature and the beautiful birds so close. What a beautiful part of the world you live in. I still haven't worked out how to have your emails delivered to my email. I'll try and visit whenever I can. Best wishes, Pauline

Dear Marie,
Thank you for your kind comments.A great sighting and photos of the Bald Eagle and counterpart. It must be very difficult for sea birds to find food now that the water is covered, Your last photo is beautiful-
All the best

not very nice, not to share!! the images are wonderful and certainly tell the story well!! our lakes, streams and rivers have been frozen for some time here...and there is not one duck, bird, swan or heron to be found. i wonder where they have all gone. the birds here at the house stay all winter , they know they will be fed well!! the last picture is so beautiful...the total sum of winter!!

Marie these were amazing shots of the Eagles. They are such huge birds. Fortunately we are beginning again to see them in our area. There are several nests in the county and such a delight to see one of them fly overhead. I see your snow friend...lets do our best to melt it quickly and get to spring. Hugs!

You got some amazing shots of that eagle! I imagine you’re looking forward to warmer weather not only because of the different plants and flowers that you’ll see, but also the birds. I’m looking forward to your bird photos.

These bald eagle shots are absolutely amazing. I've never seen an eagle in the wild but we are going to Alaska and I suspect I'll be seeing them.
