Joy of a boy

We have a daughter and two granddaughters. Girls are familiar and such a joy. With our daughter’s third pregnancy, I was convinced she’d have another girl. Then she delivered a boy. Surprise!

My husband’s aunt has a son and two grandsons and always speaks of the joy of little boys. I didn’t say much and kept an open mind as our little one grew. And you know, she’s right!

Our grandson is three now and he is such a delight. From his earliest days he gravitated to trains, trucks, and tractors. He is the child you drive to a construction site and stop to observe the activity. Meanwhile his pink doll, called Baby, inherited from his sisters, is a treasured bed time comfort.

He loves to play dress-up with his sisters, donning a tutu or a princess costume and playing along. He enjoys whatever the girls are doing and joins in the play. His favourite colour is pink.

When he directs the play at our house, we build a train track or a bridge, a tunnel out of furniture and blankets or go camping using the same materials. He can concentrate for an extended time and if I have to stop, he continues to play on his own.

Recently, I walked into a room at his house where he was playing with legos and trucks. The girls were at school.

“What are you doing?” I asked.

“Making a mess,” was the reply. The couch was covered in lego.

“What will we play?” I asked.

He took out the cement truck which we filled with legos using the “excabator,” then emptied them into the dump trucks, which he emptied at the construction site. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat.

Pure joy!

Hello Marie,

Your grandchildren are a blessing, I am sure they are fun to have visiting. My great-nephew loves his legos. Cute photo of your grandson fishing. Take care, enjoy your day! Have a great new week!

Lovely story about your little grandson! I have 2 sons... so my house was full of Lego and dinosaurs and planes and boy stuff of some sort. Then along came three grandsons.... and one granddaughter, and how wonderful to have a little girl, so different from the boys. So I know how amazed you are about having one of the "other kind".... enjoy them all!

I have two and two. It was definitely different raising the boys but it was a joy. I'm not picky about grandchildren. I'll take whatever is given and be joyous.

Such a wonderful tale about a cute little guy. I wish I had grandchildren, but I don't. I make do with the little ones of my friends, who are growing up without me being able to see them, as this pandemic continues on.

Boys are definitely a joy! Of course all children and grandchildren are, just in different ways. I'm glad you are able to experience all the joy! Have a great week :)

Grandkids are the sunshine in our life...well, we have only one...but it would be the same if we had a dozen.

You are lucky, I have no children so no grandchildren. Also, I am a single child, as were my parents, so I am really the end of the line. Enjoy Diane

And am smiling at the 'making a mess' comment.

Fun times indeed.

It is fun to read you had fun. Making a mess has a truth clarity that children have more than, I believe, adults.
A favorite memory is when I heard my older son teaching his baby brother how to make truck noises.

We have three grand-daughters, and one grandson. Our youngest daughter is expecting another and we're all eager to see if she is having a boy. Of course another girl will be dearly loved, too. Boys are definitely delightful! Love the photo of him fishing.

Oh, it sounds like he is pure joy to have around!! We have a daughter and a son. The son has always been so different from his sister. They are grown up now but I enjoy remembering those early days. Enjoy your grandson, sounds like he is a lovely boy!

What a charming post and such fun to read! I have two daughters also, and got my first grandchild in May--a grandson. I always imagined myself having a son, so I was overjoyed. However, I adore girls, so no matter what, it was going to be a win. Unfortunately, that daughter, son-in-law and my little guy live 2,800 miles away from me. I have a lot to look forward to, I hope.

GrandSon4 is just the same. He was never taught to love tractors but does, but not as much as he adores fire engines. He is a very boyish little boy - with very long hair!

What an all around little charmer you have there! I think having older sisters has taught him to be one of the gang but left on his own he is his own man! So cute.💖

Loved hearing about your grandson, what a treasure to have around. Grandchildren are so very special, quite different to having children of your own :)

your precious grandson seems like one with multiple talents dear Marie :)

according to my observations girl born with many brothers or boy born with sisters only are influenced by behavior of majority

the picture you painted of his play was just like my younger son would play with his lego ,he would join them to make ship and then part and then join repeatedly :)
i am glad you had both grand daughters and grandson ,both are different by gender and similar and different in ways ,spending time with them make us learn more then them about life
more blessings!

Absolutely agree Marie, you just exactly described my grandson also 😉 I have a son and daughter, and even though my son and family live in Sydney they are still very close.

I grew up with two sisters and a brother who was 11 years younger than me. So I felt like I had been raised in a female environment. Then my first child was a girl and we got into all the girly stuff. My second child was a boy and he was so much fun. I had never shopped for cars, trucks etc. I really think little boys are so special.
