A day at the park

We’ve spent time in the National Park here on Prince Edward Island recently and have thoroughly enjoyed every minute. Besides time at Cavendish Grove, we walked some trails and had our grandson with us one day. We will return again soon.

It was great fun to have the three year old with us, to share his joy in life and to see life from his perspective. He observed the three pairs of geese who live in the Grove this time of year, watched a squirrel feeding nearby and listened intently to the peepers and other frogs as they continued their serenade. Strangely, the frogs were quiet for a few minutes as we ate lunch before they started up again. A pair of the geese were unconcerned about us dining nearby.

We watched as crows flew to the bank to gobble up some frogs to which our grandson said, “That’s not very nice.”

It takes some thought to explain the food chain to a three year old. He listened and moved on to the next experience.

He rode in his wagon and his grandfather and I took turns pulling him over the trails or joined him as he hopped with enthusiasm over fallen trees in the glade. We had Georgie, the eleven year old golden retriever with us too and she sniffed every blade of grass along the way. It was a leisurely walk on a cold but sunny day.

It was especially fun for our boy to ride on the bridge over the Lake of Shining Waters, otherwise know as MacNeills Pond,

located just behind the dunes at Cavendish Beach.

We watched mallards on the pond as I took some photos. I love this area.

Recreational fishing season started mid month so except for one other visitor, we were alone in the park that day. Meanwhile, every pond, stream and bog hole on our way to the park had anglers busy casting for that big one. I don’t understand that quest but the quiet time in nature is appealing of course.

from the last photos, I noticed that kid growing well, I believed he is getting taller now, and he will reach his grandfather size soon....

Oh, I miss the days of Lorelei loving to go to even the playground. She still would go to the creek but in the past two years it has not cooperated.

I do love fishing...and I don't know why. I think it is one thing either you do or you don't. But I have never gone fishing and stayed as long as I wanted to stay. If they are not biting/hitting the lure, it is fun just to be out.

I just finished watching "Anne With an E" and know where the name of the "Lake of Shining Waters" comes from. Love the pictures and am glad to see Georgie again! :-)

It’s happening. I looked out the back window moments ago and saw that some trees have really leafed-out.

I'm so glad the frogs were still serenading when you took your little grandson and I can only imagine his excitement riding over that bridge. There's nothing like experiencing life through the eyes of a child - enjoy!

What a delightful outing for a 3 year old. -smile-

And yes, they Ways of Nature are difficult to explain. But. Really... 'Tis the same, on every level. We at the top of the chain, eat. And what we eat, was once alive.

Even if we cut back to eating only dried leaves, they were once alive too. I have Joseph Campbell to thank, for that interesting observation. And how true it is, when you think of it.....

I loved that walk. Did it with Anne Reader aged girls, too. That was an awfully long time ago. One of the girls is now the mother of yet another Anne reader.
She lives beside the Rideau River and I recall taking her there for an outing and watching some birds mate. Grandma had to explain that no, the bird was not being mean to another bird. Get your explanations ready and polished - you never know when the 'Why Grandma?' is going to come.

Your last photo is my favorite..I really love rustic fences and all the textures.
How wonderful to explore all of this area with your 3 year old grandson.
Looking at life through their eyes is the best.

Children are not the only ones who don't recognize mating in birds! I had an adult friend say, well, the whole tree to perch in and that bird's trying to shove the other off the branch..

Lovely trip out, and cool to have a little boy along helping you look.

It is the finest of times for grandparents and their grandchildren to spend time together and teaching them about nature is about the best that you can do. Their developing brains are capable of absorbing so much. And that doesn't even take into account the sheer pleasure of being together.

I absolutely love where you live, Maria, and would gladly exchange a month there if you'd enjoy a month here. HA! Now that's an idea, isn't it!

Oh you lucky duck Marie, how wonderful to have such quality time with your grandson, not to mention Georgie also. Sounds like there was plenty to see and hear 💜

Your grandson learning important lessons from you two is precious. Lovely walk. Fishing is a mystery. I use to, and understand the food side, but causing a beautiful creature to feel terror and pain is a no for me.
