Update

At this point, eleven days post bicycle accident, I have made some progress. Now I can slither my way out of bed without assistance which is great considering all the help I have needed this past ten days.

For the first four days post accident, all I did was sleep, though not well. I did little other than doze round the clock, from erect positions with head supported as much as possible.

I also lost my appetite. The soreness and pain masked my appetite and I had no desire to eat anything my husband offered or suggested. A mouthful was all I could manage. It is not much better today though improving a bit.

Meanwhile, fifth day post accident, I had cataract surgery. That surgery went well. The young doctor looked like he needed a permission slip from his parents to be away from school for the day. However all medical professionals look young to me these days.

There is a surgical unit specific to eye surgery on Prince Edward Island in Charlottetown and the facility is well used and maintained. We are fortunate to have such a facility and staff to operate it. While there is a wait time to have such surgery here, every citizen is eligible for treatment and it is free. One does not require insurance to access the service or have to come up with the money for such a procedure. Waiting time is a small price to pay for this treatment, in my opinion.

The day I arrived at Emergency following the bike accident, I was seen quickly and efficiently. Had I needed further treatment, it would have been provided at no cost to me. Though it is not perfect, we are fortunate to have such a medical system in this country.

So the healing continues. Bruises are turning yellow, abdominal muscles are not quite as painful and eye drops are the order of the day. While I read blogs I am not commenting yet. However, keeping up to date with you my fellow bloggers. makes one aspect of life feel normal. I’ll be reading you soon.

I'm glad you're slowly healing, both from your fall and your cataracts surgery. I agree -- we are so fortunate in Canada to have our universal medicare system. The alternative makes me shudder.

So pleased all seems to be well with the surgery, the ribs as well I know will take time. I had a bad cycle fall in Spain and the hospital there was amazing, with my UK health card we paid nothing. Now that Brexit is in force not sure what the story is re medical outside of France where we have insurance.

Take it easy we will all be here when you are ready to get back to blogging. Diane

Good to hear that you have at least some improvement. Get the rest you and your body need to recover.

That must have been some pile up you had on your bike. I'm glad to hear that you're making steady, if painful, progress. Your comments about medical care make me appreciate what a wonderful system we have here too, even though it's under immense strain due to the pandemic. Wishing you a speedy return to normal health.

I'm so glad there is progress on your healing. You really did a number on yourself! I'm also glad you were able to have the cataract surgery too. That's a lot of healing you are putting your body through.
Good to have great health care too.
Continues healing and getting back to your old self again. Your Hubby is wonderful caring for you.

Thank you for the update.
I am very, very glad that you are progressing well - both from your fall and from the surgery.
And a big YES to universal healthcare. Ours is not perfect but leaves the alternative in the dust.

I am so glad you are improving. That was quite the accident you had! But congratulations on getting that first cataract surgery done. It made a huge difference in my life. :-)

You really, really hurt yourself, with this fall. -sigh-

But I'm glad you are seeing some improvement.

About continuing with this sport?

Even maybe, cutting back in some way?

I know. You will make up your own mind.

Keep getting better.

Gentle hugs,

Thanks for posting, so sorry you are laid up this way, especially those ribs. May your injuries keep healing and you start eating again. Need some nourishment to heal, but you know that. Hugs.

I didn't realize your injuries were that serious.

Your health system sounds very much like ours. We have mostly free medical care for all New Zealand residents. The system is not perfect but it works, and at least we don't have to worry about having insurance.
Sending you hugz, Marie, and hope it won't be long now before you are able to go biking once more. Mxx

I do hope you get as much joy from your cataract surgery as I have from mine this summer. On the other hand, I wasn't wracked up from a fall when I went in, so it got my full attention! Very glad they did not find anything in need of serious repair work after your fall, other than the serious pain of waiting to heal....Hope you can tell a difference each day!!

I confess I have fallen or stumbled quite a few times lately. I guess it is my balance. I need to start some kind of exercise routine especially for balance. I'm glad your better and hope the aches continue to ease up. You need your food for strength so try to get a little more down. I'm missing your pictures.

I'm glad to hear you are on the mend. Our universal medical care in Canada is such a blessing - I never worry about access to the care I need.

Take the time to heal well.

I do follow your blog and love your images. I also like the snippets you give us, half a world away, in the tropics.
But I have not chimed in on the comment thread. I guess that makes me sound like a creepy stalker! Not so.
I may drop a word or two from time to time.Thank you for an entertaining site.

Keep getting better, Marie. It is one of the hallmarks of a civilized, modern democracy, that medical care for all its citizens is provided as needed, without imposing further stress and financial burden, paid for by funds from the general tax base. Think of the countries you admire most and you will find that they all have universal health care. No system is ever perfect, democracy itself is not perfect, but health care for all is close to it.

precious friend Marie i am sorry fir being late to learn you have hand an accident .after reading this post makes me serene to know that you are getting better by the grace of good lord!

medical care in your country sounds great and helpful for people which is such a relief to have as citizen indeed.

work in progress here though treatment for people who can't afford expensive treatment here is free but not effective perfectly it makes me sad .

sending you heartfelt best wishes and prays my friend and lots of healing energy!!!

That was a really bad fall. I hope the next phase of recovery goes well. Too bad the cataract surgery had to get mixed in at the same time, but it seems to have gone well.

I'm very glad to read this update, Marie, after your last post, reading them one right after the other. The main thing is that you're improving and making progress. So glad to hear it. Take your time and listen to your body. That's more important than our blogs, of course. But thank you for caring.

Hello Marie,
I am glad you are seeing improvement and feeling better. It is great news your cataract surgery went well too. I think your healthcare system is great, I wish we had it here too. It is great everyone is treated equally. Sending healing prayers and well wishes. Take care, enjoy the rest of your week!

Your health care is so much better than ours as your citizens know. I have been working through the medical morass and my husband had to pay $250 this week for an appointment because the specialist did not take our insurance.

Wow, for a couple of weeks I've been into my own end of blogging and haven't been around to visit blogs of all of my favorites. I am so sorry to hear about your bike accident. It does sound serious and I hope your recovery goes as fast as possible. On the good side of the ledger you got the cataract surgery. That is great! I had cataract surgery about 2 years ago in both eyes and I still can't believe how much better my vision is. And you are so right about your health care system. Free, quality health care is hard to beat, and waiting time is a small price to pay. Take good care and get well soon. I'll be looking forward to your return and more Island Musings.

I hadn't realised your accident was so bad. It sounds dreadful. And to have surgery in the middle!

Anyway glad it all went well and that you're recovering.

Like yours, our NHS has its faults but it's there when we need it. I am terrified at the prospect of what our government may do to it.

I hope you are continuing to heal...and I hope your appetite returns soon.

When Roger had his stroke, and also when I broke my leg in 2018, I totally lost my appetite. With Roger I lived on very little for about 3 weeks, and then when I broke my leg, I had to eat when I took antibiotics and all I could manage was a saltine or two.

Dear Marie, your accident sounds terrible. I can imagine the pain when you move the upper body because of the rib injury. I am glad you are improving but I know it seems like forever getting over this fall. I have had a couple of falls this year and my balance is not as good as it should be. We have to be so careful that we don't break something that leaves us crippled for the rest of our lives. Sending you light and love and best wishes for a quick and complete recovery.
