Peony time

It’s our favourite blooming time of year! A few days in late June every year, peonies fill the front garden at our house. The blooms are particularly beautiful this year, though I say that every year.

Our love of peonies started with my husband’s grandmother who grew peonies and shared her bounty with us for our garden in Newfoundland. We both associate peonies with Classie, a name which describes her perfectly.

Of course there are names for these varieties of peonies which I don’t know. I do know the wow factor of the various varieties which leads my husband and me to take photos leading up to and during the bloom.

In our current garden, some of these blooms are the size of dinner plates. These white ones,

with the paint-dipped petals near the centres are that big. A bunch of them is so heavy that in spite of a large basket around the plant, the blooms fall over.

These red peonies are not as wide but are as thick as the whites. They are always the first blooms of the lot.

Some of our peonies have a hint of pink with a yellow centre.

Others are wide and thick with short white petals lining the outer pink ones. Beautiful pink petals make a thick centre.

We call the one on the right a single peony. It is a soft salmon colour without many petals and stands beside a bunch of huge fluffy pink ones.

While some buds are yet to burst forth,

the red ones have begun the inevitable fall of petals.

We enjoy them while we can!

 P. S.

I posted before I checked the peonies this morning.

A surprise bloom this morning.

The depth of this bloom is amazing.

Pink blooms waiting for their moment in the sun.

Rose peonies in their glory!

Your peonies are gorgeous! And, WOW, you have a lot of them! You're making me want to plant more. Ours are long past blooming so it was nice to see yours. Our white ones are always the later bloomers, too. I've always assumed it's because they're in a shadier spot than the red ones, but now I'm curious if they're just a different type that blooms a little later.

I love peonies. The scent is beautiful, and they vanish completely over winter then come back with a flourish! Thank you for your pictures.

Our peonies have come and gone, but they were spectacular this year. For several days we had a vase of them on the kitchen table, but sadly they have wilted away and are now part of the compost. Miriam has only me to look at now. Poor woman!

I just love peonies too and you've got some super beauties there! Peonies are a big "heritage" flower on the prairies too. EVERYONE had peonies when I was a kid.

Stunning...spectacular...
What more can I say?
I love the huge flowers, especially the pale pink single petal.
I really wish I had some of those in my yard.

Debbie,

I don’t cut them. I don’t know why. I enjoy them in the garden so much it never occurs to me to cut them.

Peonies are so beautiful with their papery delicate-looking petals. I have a friend further south (in Christchurch) who grows them, but it is sadly too warm for us to do so here. I love them, and your collection is so pretty :)

Your post reminded me of the peonies my mom had when we were growing up. The one thing I remembered out them is they always had a ton of ants all over them. Your's are beautiful!

The peonies are so beautiful! Like others have said, these flowers remind me of my mom. She would often cut one of the flowers and place it in a bowl on the kitchen table. The perfume from the flowers would permeate the entire house.

The wind did my peonies in this year so I will have to enjoy yours.

So beautiful and you have them, shown off, so beautifully.

We have some but with age, my husband is no longerable to keep after his flower garden, so they, and many things, are rather lost.

Yet another thing to be happy, you are still "young" enough, to take good care of. -smile-

Oh, they are gorgeous! I am enjoying my mother's peony plants at the moment, and my own. We each have some from my great-grandmother's garden. That one you've included that is light pink and has a frill partway into the bloom is just extraordinary! (7th photo)

Not far from our house is a historic peony garden (100 years old) with dozens of varieties of cultivars, including many that are rare. It was fabulous in bloom at the beginning of June, with large numbers of visitors. Your blossoms look beautiful.

Marie, I can sure see why you look forward to these flowers blooming every year. Wow, so much beauty and the blooms are so large! It seems the climate must be just perfect on PEI for peonies! 😊 Thank you for sharing all this beauty with us! John

Thank you for sharing these GORGEOUS photos! One thing I miss about our old house is the peonies. The fragrance is always so wonderful. You have caused me to wonder if, perhaps, I couldn't grown them in containers. I am growing English roses in containers, and they are doing well. I have to think about this. Thanks for the beautiful photos and inspiration.

Hi Marie, Thank you for your kind comment on my blog which included a question, “Love the various boats and ships. Do you ever get tired watching them? I don’t think I would.” I’m just like you. I never get tired of it. There is something about living by the water … like we do … I am fascinated by all I see out there … nature and human activity as well. Thanks for the question. John
