At first light every morning, the Song Sparrow sits on the rail outside our window and sings to the rising sun. The tiny birds have been back on Prince Edward Island since the end of March. A pair of the these tiny singers make a nest in our hedge every spring. The morning serenade through the open window is a great way to start the day, though a tad early. Often I can sleep again after the sun salutation by my feathered friend.
The only snow left along the boardwalk now is under the trees and in their shade. Already nature is awakening as Coltsfoot blooms are the first bit of colour this spring.
We were in North Rustico on the north shore of the island last week and fishers have begun to put their boats in the water again in readiness for the lobster fishery.
After my last post, several readers commented about the cost of a lobster licence, going for as much as $7,000,000. These days, many licence holders pass the license down to a family member when s/he is ready to retire from the industry.
Geese were in the harbour at North Rustico too
and not far away, a pair had staked out a small wetland area for themselves. It is near a road and parking lot but the two appeared not to care.
A lone Ring-billed gull enjoyed a walk on the beach
while nearby, snow was slow to melt along the headland at water level.
News from our house:
The weather is above zero most nights now and we have had a few days with temperatures in the low double digits. We were able to put out the clothesline again and the clothes dried in a few hours one sunny day.
We put the barbecue back on the patio last week and had our first barbecue as well. It will be a few weeks before we can eat outdoors though.
I had Covid last month for the second time. It affected my blood pressure this time and it still isn’t back to where it had been prior to this second bout. I am monitoring my BP and have another doctor’s appointment soon. I don’t want Covid again. I am taking all the precautions. However I was doing that before this last bout too.

Sorry to hear you had Covid again and I hope your BP regulates itself back to normal soon.
Prayers y'all never get covid again
I am sorry that happened to you.
Beautiful pictures of spring
I agree, sparrows chirping before sunrise is lovely way to start the day.
It still surprises me how quickly life begins anew in Spring. It happens so fast.A week ago there was a mound of snow over the tulip bed. Now they are 6” high. The birds are so busy. Their songs do the heart good. I don’t have to worry about them waking me, however, because I can’t hear them well, and I may be up before them anyway.
Clothesline out, grill out, birds singing, spring is there! Sorry to hear about you getting sick. Hope you are back to 100% soon!
I do hope your BP gets back on track. I am still wearing masks when inside most places and hope I can keep from getting the latest iteration of the virus. I have seen my first dandelions pop up around here. :-)
Wonderful shots!
I'm under the weather too, but have tested negative for Covid.
it is pleasure to hear from you dear Marie ,you were in thoughts all the time with wishes and prays that all is well !
hope that your blood pressure will be normal asap my friend !
i think covid is accompanying us too after the 2019 and appear strongly once in while that is what i feel because symptoms of flu are hardly gone .
thanks for images that show gorgeous start of the spring on your beautiful island
water and birds are lovely .wishing you health peace and happiness !
The photos are lovely. I chuckled at the bouncing landing of the goose. I've been on a few aircraft that skipped like that. :)
I do hope your blood pressure issues can be resolved quickly.
Hello Marie,
So sorry to hear you had Covid a second time, I hope your BP returns to normal soon and you feel better soon. Love the cute Song Sparrow, I have a Mockingbird outside my window making all kinds of sounds. Beautiful views of the water and birds. Take care, have a happy new week!
Love the snow with the red soil of the headland. And so sorry to hear about your bout with Covid. I hope you are now back to normal blood pressure unless elevated by silly people doing silly things without masks and putting the rest of us at risk. Although the riskiest place to catch it seems to be airplanes. Both my daughter's went positive with cold symptoms after a business plane trip.
Oh so sorry that you had covid again. I hope you can heal and get your BP back to normal.
Lovely walk you took us on. I love the clump of snow at water level.
Morning salutations from that sweet song sparrow. Perhaps a bit too early but so wonderful in its own way.
Sue
A truly delightful (and beautiful) post until I got to your health news. I do hope your recovery is complete. And quick.
Sorry to hear about COVID again, several people I know have suddenly had it for the second time. We have both had 5 vaccines but I am not convinced it stops it though it might help make symptoms easier.
I love that first photo, beautiful. Cheers Diane
I am sorry that you had Covid, you never know what will come of it, but with the vaccinations there have also been many negative side effects.
I enjoy your wonderful photos, of birds and fishermen... great that a sparrow sings near your window every morning... spring... enjoy.
Many greetings to you and all good wishes from Viola
Thanks.
Sounds like the spring has sprung for you. Birds singing sounds enchanting. Sorry to hear that you got covid again, hopefully you'll get better and back to being normal again. Take care, Marie.
Very sorry about the return of covid. I hope you and your bp get back in track to enjoy the arrival of spring. This is no time to be sick!
That is a stunning photo of the Sparrow trilling, along with the Coltsfoot blooming, the geese landing and the snow still not melted. I love the contrast of red soil, white snow and sunny blue sky in the last image. Spring advances.
So sorry that Covid has returned. Best wishes that you will soon be 100% again.
i will start at the beginning as that is "a very good place to start"!! (do you remember)!!
the song sparrow is a beauty, they may be mainly brown but their markings are so striking!! i am not sure i would sleep with the window open during those temperatures although it seems you have become accustom to the cold!!
the homes and shoreline always look so pretty in your images, and i like the reflection of the bulkhead in the water...
our geese love puddles and can always been seen swimming in them!!
sorry to read about your bouts with covid, it can be very difficult to recover from. and as you know, it can take a long time. i think i have been very lucky, i have had 2 very bad bouts but i believe i recovered fully!!
so nice to see you today...good luck with your taxes, i am on a 1/2 hour break and then i will be back on it!!
Love all the signs of Spring!! We had a BBQ on the weekend and it was perfect deck weather since that side faces west!
Hope you're on the mend from COVID.
Such interesting photos. I do enjoy hearing about life on your island. And hate that Covid has visited you again. Just isn't fair is it.
Song Sparrows back here too.
Covid is still with us. Alberta still has about 25 deaths a week. I hoe that you make a good and rapid recovery.
I like the s/he. It's distinctive. Have you given any thot to a symbol or signifier for non-binary?
Sending healthful vibes.
Waking to the sound of bird song is one of those little pleasures that life throws us sometimes. I hope you soon recover from your recent bout with covid. Take care, and big hugz, Mxx
A Blackbird performs the role of early-morning alarm call here. Our sparrows don't sing, just chirp tunelessly. I hope you're soon feeling better and your blood pressure gets back to normal.
Terribly sorry about the COVID, that mess is wicked. I met a lady at the wedding venue the other day that lost her hubs to that mess two yrs ago. It just hits some so hard and others not so much. I had it over a 1.5 yrs ago but I did not have it bad, just enough to have me feeling like crap for a week. I stayed away from others while I had it and stayed home cause I did not want to be that one that spread it to someone else. Looks like you are finally getting out from under the snow! YAY....I am on the deck right now and it is so nice out here. Trying to enjoy it before the terrible heat and humidity of the summer moves in. Stay warm cause even above zero, is cold.
I did the covid thing as well. I'm so glad I got my shots for it.
Coffee is on and stay safe
Those Warmer Days Are Creeping In - Enjoy The BBQ Time And Keep Looking Up
Cheers
Hello Marie :=)
How lovely to wake up to the Sparrow singing, its also a lovely photo. Great waterbird images
too. I hope you recover fully from covid, it's really not fair to get it for a second time.
Keep on wearing the mask, Marie! I do that.
Enjoy Spring with its birds' chirping, grill and clothesline out, snow melt!
Beautiful song sparrow, Marie. It's always exciting to see winter give way to spring. So sorry you have had Covid again. I've never tested positive, but have twice had colds and lost my sense of taste and smell for a couple of months, so it's assumed I had the virus. I think we will all have to deal with it on a regular basis, which isn't a fun thought.
I hope you feel well again soon.
It is wonderful to get ready for warmer days...
Covid for the second time?!! Oh, dear, when will we get rid of it for good.
You still had the patience to take these gorgeous pictures. Thank you!!
So sorry about the Covid affecting your BP! We love hearing the birds sing in the morning. I'm surprised how cold it is in your parts- Way too cold for me. We are in Florida for the winter .
So poetic! You have such a lovely turn of phrase.
Hope Covid leaves you alone and your blood pressure returns to normal.
Beautiful photos!
Sorry to hear you have been sick. Hope your blood pressure is back under control soon.
Have a great weekend!
Oh, not that covid again! I hope you are feeling better now! Keep safe & take care of yourself...
Love, Titti
Not good news on the COVID front, Marie. I hope it all turns out well.
Hi Marie, Thanks for taking us along to North Rustico. Your 3rd image just fascinates me … what a wonderful place to live. I hope the folks who live around there know how lucky they are to live in a beautiful place. Yes, I was fascinated with the $7M license fee … left you a comment about it in the previous post. I am so sorry to hear you had a 2nd bout with Covid! I hope you will have a 100% recovery, if not already. Thank you for sharing your blog. Take care and best regards to you and your family. John
I love the Coltsfoot. I don't ever recall hearing that name. They're so pretty.
Love that they pass the license down. That makes sense. Yikes on the price, otherwise.
Covid here twice for me as well. And last week I got a BP machine actually for both of us to monitor. It's so fun - I never had one before. This is all new to me.
Wishing you a wonderful week ahead!!!!
Sorry to hear you had Covid again and it affected your BP.
Love seeing the signs of spring all around us.
Ugh! Sorry to hear that you had Covid for a SECOND time. I’m sure once was enough. I hope that you’re taking good care of yourself.
is that really 7 million for the lobster licence? Eek! Hope you're feeling better. Luckily neither hubby nor myself have had the dreaded lurgy - yet!:)
MPH,
I am open to using a signifier for non-binary. Any suggestions?
Sorry you've had COVID twice now. I didn't realize it could cause blood pressure problems. I hope yours is back to normal soon.
It's nice to hear that spring is on your island. Wishing you health and happiness!
I am sorry to hear you have had Covid for the second time...I really hope it is the last time.
Your photos make me wonder how you get those birds to pose for you. lol
Sorry you had COVID again. I had it twice in spite of all my precautions and have been left with no smell and no taste. Also extreme fatigue. Hope you recovered nicely. I am late reading your blog. Too much on my plate lately.
