Dusk on the trail

We watched the sun sink into the ice-covered sea then drove to the upper part of the boardwalk. The lights along the trail lit the way as we walked the boardwalk for the first time at dusk.

Light lingered on the horizon while deeper shades of blue spread over the bay.

We were the only ones there. Even the animals had deserted the place, retreating to dens and nests for the evening.

A sliver of moon was shining, accompanied by Venus.

Silence added to the eerie feel of the place as darkness embraced the woods. Soon, the beauty of the setting made us forget all else.

Then it started, howling, but different from that of dogs. A lonely sound, it carried in the still, otherwise silent evening air. Foxes!  They howled as if to say, "We are here." By the time I was ready to record them, they had fallen silent.

Howling sounds on this short clip are similar to those we heard.

The white trunks of the birches looked to have been created for this place and time.

The lights of the city twinkled in the background. Other trees looked black against the blue sky. The intricate branchlets of one tree reached for the sky like tendrils grasping for the ether.

The pergola by the marsh was framed by the residual light. From that pergola,

the flash of the lighthouse was obvious as it beamed in rotation.

For a few moments in time, all was right with the world.

Lights along the trail, very forward thinking and planning. I'm more than a little envious. So lovely.

The colour and lights of the second and second to last photo are to die for.

I have heard what sounded like a pack of foxes at the cottage. We were in a tent, and they sounded like they were right outside it. Of course, they weren't.

One night it also seemed like a bunch were coming toward me when I was out the camera, so, being a chicken, I quickly doubled back to the cottage.

It is a great recreational area for residents, Celia, and is well maintained by the city.

The sky that night was spectacular, AC.

I don't think I'd stick around if a fox was nearby.

http://goldendaze-ginnie.blogspot.com/ I wish all the people who are suffering in this crazy world could spend just one hour in that setting ... it is balm for the soul for sure. Even your pictures have that effect on me.

I had trouble posting your comment, Ginnie. I had to copy and paste it.

Thank you for the lovely comment. I too wish the troubled world could get a few minutes of peace in a place like the boardwalk.

Great evening pix! Nice boardwalk with the lights. Foxes sound very much like the Coyotes we hear.

Marie Smith said...

I'm sure you would enjoy it, Shammickite.

Marie Smith said...

There are coyotes here too, though we don't see them near the city like the fixes, FG.

your narrative is beautiful...almost as pretty as your pictures. i love the "after the sunsets color", it is sometimes prettier than the sunset itself!!

Marie Smith said...

Thank you, Debbie. I love the post sunset colours too, especially the deepening blues.

Beautiful images Marie, the period that photographers call the 'blue hour' is quite magical. I was fascinated by the fox calls. Although I have never seen one they are about, mainly in the bush but apparently seen in the suburbs also.

Marie Smith said...

I've never heard the term the blue hour before. It is a great name! Foxes are everywhere here.
