Two short trails

On our last hike, my husband and I left the main trail at Strathgartney and trekked two short trails, Hemlock and Rock and Roll. The terrain was similar to the main trail but these areas were memorable for a number of reasons.

A bird’s nest in a fir tree was clearly visible from the trail. It was in a small tree less than two meters off the ground. We had never seen a nest in such an obvious place.

Two pieces of flat sandstone in two different locations, were perched against some trees. One had the name Ruben 1921-.

The remainder was illegible. The second had marks but nothing legible.

Two broken tree trunks were covered in mushrooms,

though of different types.

A burr on a trunk looked like a bear wrapped around the tree from one side

and an alien blob from another angle.

One tree had an interesting root structure above ground but the moss covering some roots

would soon encompass all.

And all around, the glory of autumn filled the spirit with wonder.

We have a trail with the same name, Hemlock, which I was on yesterday. I love your pictures of aliens growing on trees. :-)

I love that you observe so much on your hikes Marie, you see things that most would miss. I like it even more that we are lucky enough to see nature's treasures through your lens, merci beaucoup ✨

I've just returned from a stroll in the local wood and saw similar sights - even the aliens! It looks as though your autumn is a little more advanced than ours and at present we seem to have a shortage of fungi in this area as the woods seem too dry. The weather has plans to right the shortage of water in the next few days.

Weird how those burrs form on a tree trunk like that.

that little nest is so close to the ground, making it so vulnerable. amazing what you see, when you take the time to look!! the last image of the tree, looked like a growling tiger to me ;)

Some wonderful observations you had. The moss covering the roots is impressive and how it just grows over time covering it. Thanks for sharing your hike and thoughts with us.

I would be hesitant to attempt any trail named "Rock and Roll." Just sounds ominous!

Those burrs are very interesting. It like playing the what does the cloud look like game. I'd love for my Grand Girls to see all these sites.

Echoing everyone else. I am so very grateful for your eye and camera.
I could see a sad face in the second piece of sandstone. A very sad face.

Just a perfect walk. Yes, a very well built nest in the wrong spot. Yes, too, seeing nature at work and it's wonderful.

I have never seen a tree trunk covered with so many mushrooms and moss. Nature still surprises me ... in a good way. :)

I wonder who placed the sandstone pieces, and what the story behind them is . . .

Beautiful nature shots.

The knot does look like a little koala bear, at least from the one side. I wonder if the sandstone pieces were tombstones? Or some kind of memorial markers?
