Along the way 6

As we go along our way around Prince Edward Island, my husband and I always see interesting or unusual things as we have the last few months.

In August one day along the boardwalk, we looked out to sea at a fishing boat off-shore. Fishing boats and other vessels are a common sight here. However, that day, the top of a cargo vessel appeared in the distance behind the fishing boat but the hull of the ship was never visible. The vessel was a long distance away and I took numerous photos, but the hull never materialized. It was a curious sight.

When we visited the lighthouse at Panmure Head, we saw this mailbox down the road from the lighthouse. The box has a mermaid and a number of symbols of the island such as potatoes, part of a lobster, red sandstone and a lighthouse. Destiny rests on the side of the mailbox and several items we couldn’t identify were on top as well. Does the owner feel that destiny brought her to this island?

There was an Canadian Air Force base at Summerside until 1994. The Royal Canadian Air Force Base was established during the Second World War as a flight training school. Later, during the Cold War, the base was a NATO training site. The airfield is maintained today and the RCAF out of Greenwood, Nova Scotia has Hercules aircraft exercises regularly at the airfield including paratrooper training. It is normal to have Hercules aircraft flying over our neighbourhoods as on this day I was out for a walk.

On the Bonshaw Trails, this flower was high on a tree trunk. My husband and I looked for others wondering if it was a way of marking the trail for some reason. We didn’t see any others so the mystery remains.

On our bicycle ride yesterday, out in the country parked by a house, this old truck has an interesting advertisement. We smiled when we saw it. I wonder if the smiles translate into business?

Sometimes after we have been on a hike, my husband and I will stop at a dairy bar for an ice cream. One of the unusual sights we’ve seen at a dairy bar is a pet rat on a leash which a young couple brought to the service window at the dairy bar. The rat spent time in the man’s hood and went down his neck and came out the bottom of his hoodie. It was an unusual sight for sure.

What is next I wonder?

hello,

Love the view of the fishing boat. The mermaid on the mailbox is really cute. I am not a fan of rats, even if they are pets. The flower stuck on the tree is pretty, it must mean something to someone. Take care, enjoy your day! Have a happy weekend!

That Hercules is really big!And that flower on the mail box reminds me of a book I have read called Where the Crawdals sing by Delia Owens

That's quite a production that mailbox Marie 😉 I have to say the thought of a rat running up and down my back does not sound appealing 😁

Rats are so smart, and friendly. They like to be close. I imagine this adventure was rat heaven!

I like the odd sights you've observed. The flower in the tree is a puzzle.

I like the photos of the odd and unusual...we are at my daughters and on the way here, someone has stacked old tires and painted them and made Minions out of them. I want a photo so bad, but no way to get one. It is like all of sudden they are there and I am past them. they are on a curve...so no way to get a drive by and for sure no way to stop.

My best pet rat story is from 30 years ago when I went to Toronto to see some big production or another (either "Lion King" or "Mama Mia," I forget). Outside the theatre there was a goth girl, all ripped black clothes and metal plus a big mohawk. She had a pet white rat with her and this little old lady on the way to theatre, dripping with furs and flashy jewelry, was oohing and aahing over the rat and petting it with delight. Talk about opposites bonding over an unlikely pet!

Love that mermaid! And such an eclectic grouping of fun things make one unable to forget that mailbox. Pretty purple flower, and it is curious to wonder how it got there. That rat? Yikes! :-)

I like rats, I've heard they make good pets, I wouldn't want one inside my clothes though!

That's a creative mailbox, I like it. Can't imagine a rat running all around my back, it gives me the shivers. :) I wonder what's up with the flower on the tree. A nice mystery no doubt. Have a great weekend, Marie!

I would love to know the story behind the mailbox - and the flower on the tree.

One doesn't usually see rats out for a walk.

this was a fun one marie, loaded with questions. the biggest one being...do people really have pet rats?? and i guess the answer is yes!!

that mailbox certainly is unusual, a gaggle-taggle of thoughts!! perhaps i nailed that purple flower to the tree!!

we live sorta/kinda close to fort dix naval base. i see air crafts like this often, but i can never capture them like this. what a very nice image!!

Loved seeing all your Odd Things, but that ship was really amazing. As I looked at your rat picture, I could also see Son wandering around the kitchen with his two rats sitting on his shoulders waiting for their dinner!

To each his own - the mailbox and the rat! I am quite happy not to have Hercules aircraft disturbing the peace in our neighbourhood, thank you very much!

My goodness - what a variety of photos. I really love the mailbox - it's adorable. The pet rat is a little creepy to me - and bringing it to an ice cream shop? Not for me!

Such a different post Marie with a diverse range of unusual sights.
In 2016 my son and wife were living in Banff. On our spring visit, Stuart took us on a lovely trail at Barrier Lake. We had just left its shores when we came across a grove of young fir trees. It was such a surprise to see numerous fresh red, white and yellow gerbras placed in their branches.

Although I’m on a sort of a “blog-break” I find that I can’t resist checking out what a few of my favorite bloggers are posting about. Island Musings never fails to delight. Just looked back over your posts through September 20. You really do a great job of sharing sights on Prince Edward Island. In this post lots of cool pictures of the unusual. I got a kick out of the little white rat and then reading all the reactions from the commentors. It confirms to me how we react to something is all based on our perceptions. Not surprising that most don’t see the pleasure in a pet rat. :-) I really enjoyed all your photos of the foliage. Your fall colors are wonderful. Lastly, in this post … that first photo … the ships at sea on a warm day and the one ship with the hull never showing. I’ve seen similar views at sea when ships are so far away. I’m curious if it has to do with the curvature of the earth? Hope you have a fine week ahead.

I think George would approve if I put him in a sling and carried him around. We used to see a woman walking a ferret on a lead in the woods but never a rat in a hoodie.
We've seen things on trees that suggest a trail but never lead anywhere too.
