Picnic in the grove

The October sun is warm and the gentle breeze feels like those of August which is strange for an October day. We had cycled on the Gulf Shore Parkway and worked up an appetite. We headed to Cavendish Grove in search of a picnic table to have a leisurely lunch.

We found two tables side by side at the edge of the grove so we could sit in the sun.

It is perfect. A few people are walking the trails but nobody is eating there. Our crusty bread, meat, cheese, olives and pickles are delicious with a mug of black tea. Lunch is memorable in the October sun.

Later we walked around the grove to take in the sights. The shade in the grove is one of the attractions of the area in the summer, but this amount of shade won’t be around too much longer.

The trail through the glade is particularly beautiful,

especially with the yellows of the Striped Maples in the area.

Further along the trail, the area used for weddings and photos isn’t busy.

However, a plough is working in the field behind the chapel.

Back in the grove, this tree trunk is impressive.

Above, the leaves range in colour from green, to red, yellow and orange. Nature overshadows much human-made beauty.

The apple trees in the grove have dropped most of their crop at this point. I wonder if it is safe to sit on that bench now?

Part of a tree came down in the last wind storm. It is sad to lose any part of the old guard in the grove. I hope they all make it through this winter.

we have had so many storms this year, neighbors have lost a lot of trees. "my farm", where i visit, lost a lot of trees and branches during storm isaias. a really bad storm for us, the aftermath of which, caused the fire.

i hate to see all of those apples on the ground, what a shame...and no sitting on that bench, i would find another.

really pretty images of this area!!

Such beauty where you are; those maples are wonderful. Great spot for a picnic. October is still sunny here in WA state for the moment but very frosty.

I love the look of this area, and the long shadows remind me that it is getting closer every day to winter. Your photos are wonderful and much appreciated. :-)

What a wonderful place to spend time on a lovely fall day! I couldn’t pick a favourite , but that massive tree trunk rates very near the top.

Too cold here for picnics now. We've got snow and it's below zero.

Beautiful views!

Today we've got an Indian summer sort of day, but it's going to go back down overnight and won't recover for tomorrow.

How very, very beautiful. I was surprised to see so many apples on the ground - and hope that something takes advantage of the bounty. And no, I would think twice about settling on that seat.

Beautiful photos of your walk. I wonder when the apple eaters will show up. There's plenty for lots of birds and other creatures.

WOW that is a lot of apples, I can see why you wouldn't want to sit on the bench. It looks like a lovely walk, and beautiful photos. Your picnic sounds perfect, traditional favourites :-)

I always love your photos...and always wish we could sit and visit. I LOVE that photo below the picnic tables...not that I don't like them all. But I just wish I could step into it.

A lovely, lovely outing. So many apples. My question is, are they edible? I didn't even think of them falling on my head.

Your lunch sounds terrific. A glass of red wine would have been a great substitute for the tea, methinks!

What a great trail you have. In fact, several, if I am remembering correctly.

It all looks so beautiful! I love to see all those apples laying around. It will provide food for the wild life. I don't see any snow in these photos. We are covered in a white blanket of snow with a temp of -2. It did warm up a bit. Thank you for all you share Marie.

We've had a lot of wind already and many trees and branches down. In our last windstorm, a local man was killed by a falling tree. I see many apples on the ground! It makes me want to make apple crisp, my favorite. Glad you had the chance to take your scenic ride.

What a beautiful day you had for a walk (such a contrast to our weather today, yesterday we got 7" of snow, and frigid temps down in the minuses with the wind chill). I enjoyed your pictures of the lovely chapel, the fallen apples, and the beautiful old tree... what a lovely place to wander!

Hello,

It is a beautiful place for a picnic! I love the trail and all the big trees. The fall colors are pretty. It is sad when the wind storms take down the trees. I would not want the apples falling on my head. The acorns hurt. Take care, enjoy your day! Have a great new week!

That's a sweet setting for a wedding. You are right though ...it looks pretty forlorn with no one around.

Wow, that's a huge amount of apples on the ground. Applesauce in your future??

What a nice outing you had, first the cycling and then the visit to the park. I would have been filling my backpack with some of those apples! Apple pie, apple crumble, apple cake, apple bread...💖

What a pretty place for a picnic. I, too, hope winter will not be too severe on those lovely trees.
And so many apples. Sitting underneath that lot would have definitely been hazardous!

What a perfect outing Marie, the autumn colours are gorgeous 🍁 I did smile at the possible consequences of sitting on the bench below the apple tree 🍏

Such a beautiful part of the planet you live in. I hope there are some critters that make good use of those fallen apples!
