Notes from the isle

The temperature warmed up for a week then we had snow again. Now we are into a week or more of rain. Maritime weather in spring is totally unpredictable but it marks our gradual emergence from what feels like our winter confinement.

My husband and I brought the barbecue out to the deck again, ahead of the warmer weather. The only encouragement we needed was the lack of snow on the patio. Clothes are on the line again too. As soon as it starts to warm up, the dryer has a rest for a few months. Probably most importantly though, we open the windows on occasion. The fresh air requires a duvet on the bed for another few weeks but that’s perfect. It will be too hot soon enough.

What a great feeling to be on the bikes again, more than three months since our last rides. I was shaky for 20 seconds when I started but adjusted easily. My husband had no problems either.

Whenever possible, we walk the boardwalk then ride our bikes. It is quiet in our area in the mornings, a perfect place to try out our bikes again while we wait for the snow to disappear from the trails. Our first long ride will be in Cavendish but around the neighbourhood is fine for now when weather permits.

Meanwhile, my husband and I both have our appointments for vaccinations later this month which will be a relief for sure. The province plans to vaccinate everyone before second shots are administered this summer.

Looking ahead, the hope in Atlantic Canada is to have another Atlantic bubble, like last summer, beginning April 19th. This will mean anyone who is a resident of the four Canadian Atlantic provinces can travel among those provinces without two weeks isolation on entering another or returning to one’s home province. Such is not the case at the present time. Maybe other Canadians will be able to visit later this summer. It is almost too much to imagine after the year we’ve had.

Slowly but surely, we are creeping back into the world after a pandemic winter.

Good note!

Good news about the vaccine. That will be a relief.
And opening windows us lovely. That great outdoor smell in the house is one I look forward to all winter. Here it's up and down, warm then cold, usual seasonal changes.

I love the feeling of fresh sheets from the clothesline. And I am so glad to hear you're already getting out on your bikes! :-)

Hello,

The walk and bike ride sounds nice, it is great to get outside on the good weather days.

I like being able to open the windows and air out the house, after being closed up all winter.
Hubby and I both have received the 1st dose of the vaccine, the second one comes at the end of the month. Take care and stay well. Have a great day and a happy new week!

Oh my yes. I got clothes out on the line two days ago and was just so pleased. Mind you, the clothesline stays up and it was incredibly dirty. Here we are out in the nice clean countryside. What is this stuff? Ah, birds using the line to perch.
I guess we are all greeting spring in our own way.

sound the weather is uncertain everywhere this year...

we were happy to walk outside with temperature above 10 Celsius last week, but last two days drops down to 5 Celsius ...unusual in the South.

Yes, and hope, pandemic will disappear soon.

Glad you have your appointments booked.

Lovely and sunny here but a bitterly cold wind apparently coming from the Arctic. It certainly feels like it.

I opened our bedroom window last week to air the room. But like you we get very variable - and frequently wet - weather.

It will be good to get out and about again, though Spring has a habit of making sudden abrupt changes of direction. We had lovely weather here last week but flurries of snow this morning.

I am thrilled for you that you are finally emerging from your winter confinement and hope that you can emerge from the Covid confinement as well. I am yet to get an appointment for the vaccine.

We had some nice weather until yesterday. It's back to being a little chilly and today we had some snow which is now gone. Crazy weather indeed! Good that you are getting vaccinated soon. We still don't know when here. Enjoy your bike rides, they will be fun and enjoyable.

I do hope that before long we can all relax some of our restrictions. The spring weather makes me want to be outside more as well.

This wishes you sunshine, warmth and happy cycling as your spring unfolds.I hope the Atlantic bubble is soon open.

I can't believe how many people have taken yup cycling here. It's probably as a result of covid. I hope they continue riding. I rode 47000km over a period of 35 years.

Good news about your vaccinations. Most of my family here has had their second shot. Because we have so many elders in our clan we are still being cautious for the time being. How wonderful to get out on your bikes. Anytime the temperatures here get over 50F I open the windows and sometimes the doors. Smells so fresh.

I'm looking forward to Rad riding weather here. I would probably do so now, but my boyfriend prefers warmer and sunnier weather.

So good to start opening up and getting out after a long cold winter Marie, enjoy those first bike rides. Yes there is talk about 'travel bubbles' over this way also, between Australia, New Zealand and Tasmania.. things are as you say, slowly resuming to the new normal ✨

Oh, bike rides sound scca wonderful. I hope all goes as planned for your area.

Your provinces seem to be a few sensible steps ahead of us here in Ontario. Sigh. I was just sent an ad for a beach vacation in PEI. Not yet. Double, heartfelt sigh.

Awesome that you can get out on your bikes again. New Zealand has just opened a travel bubble with our neighbour Australia - it will be interesting to see how it goes.
Stay safe :) xx

Enjoyed your words and one thing you said reminded me of my mother. You mentioned hanging clothes out to dry. Near the end of her life my mother complained that hardly anyone used a clothesline anymore. She said "you don't get the sweet outdoor smell from those new-fangled dryer things!"

Lorrie said...

Getting outside in the spring is so lovely. Your bike ride sounds like a lot of fun. Hanging clothes out to dry in the summer is something I like to do, too, but I don't have a clothesline, so I wait until we put up the summer gazebo (canvas) and use the side supports for hanging. That won't happen for a month or so as there is a lot of wind just now. I do love the smell of line dried clothes.

It sure is good to be able to move around again.
Must get out my bike and peddle away, love bike riding.
Hope you keep well Marie.
All the best from Australia.

this is so wonderful and positive!! we bbq all winter as we have an awning over our bbq. chuck pulls it up, right in front of the sliding door on the side of the house, and he does not even have to go outside!! it's so funny to watch and the food takes a little longer but we have always done it this way!!

we have not been on the bikes yet, i can't wait!!
