Notes from the island

Community spread of Covid in Atlantic Canada is controlled again and Prince Edward Island has opened to other Atlantic Canadians. On July 18th, we open to all Canadians. Everyone must apply for a Prince Edward Island pass prior to coming here or returning home from a visit off-island. Proof of vaccination means one doesn’t have to self-isolate on arrival.

The most controversial move recently by the province has been the removal of the mask mandate indoors for fully vaccinated people. This move has caused mixed reaction from islanders. I am one week post second vaccination but I’m not sure if this time next week I will be ready to ditch the mask at stores and other indoor locations.

Islanders have been compliant with the masking directive throughout the pandemic but there have been reports of people harassing those who continue to wear masks indoors. I don’t understand such behaviour. If I wear a mask it doesn’t affect your freedom to do as you wish. The pandemic continues with an end within grasp…maybe.

I fell into a ditch on my bike this past week. We were cycling a remote section of trail with few users as evidenced by the overgrowth on the trail. That section had not been groomed yet this year. Over the thirty plus kilometres we only met one person. The thought that I would cycle off the narrow strip was in my head up to the time I did just that.

The bike is 27 kilograms or 60 pounds and isn’t easy to lift off oneself from among the bushes when hurt. However, riding wasn’t a problem after my husband helped me up although I did injure my ankle. It is sore and bruised still but not painful like it was the first day. It could have been much worse.

The garden grows despite the cold temperatures we’ve had recently. I planted seeds and plants June 7th and over a month in, tomatoes are forming as is cauliflower. The beans are staked and growing well as are the cucumber plants. Again this year the peppers don’t like my vegetable patch. Those plants aren’t thriving as are the others.

The potato fields around the island, supplying 25% of Canada’s need, are growing well too. The early potatoes look ready to blossom. Corn, mainly grown for silage, has grown well with the rain this past few weeks.

Tourists are returning to the island this summer. It is good to see businesses open again but some have succumbed to the pandemic leaving empty store fronts and closed motels and cottages. It will take a long time to recover from this pandemic.

The remnants of hurricane Elsa passed over the island this past weekend without much damage. High winds with the trees full of leaves can be devastating. We are happy not to have lost any old friends!

Ooops sorry about the fall, I know what it is like though as I have had a couple of falls that took me to the hospital!! I will certainly continue to mask even if they lift restricions here, having had pneumonia3 times I cannot afford to take chances.

Re winter in South Africa, they also do get snow, particularly in the mountain areas. I have made snowmen while living in Johannesburg though not a regular happening.

Stay safe, Diane

The behaviour of some anti-maskers never ceases to amaze me. Why they think it is appropriate for them to attack others for wearing a mask is beyond my level of comprehension. I visited Hong Kong a few years ago, long before the pandemic, and I would estimate that at least twenty percent of the population wore masks routinely. It didn't bother those of us who didn't!

Glad your tumble into the ditch didn't result in any worse injuries!

It sounds like you'll be over your ankle injury before I will. As you said, it could have been much worse. But we'll both be back in shipshape soon, I hope! :-)

Ach I know how it is to fall off your bicycle. Then disentangling yourself and getting upright again and checking how you are. I'm glad it wasn't worse though.

I'm still masking indoors long after vax. I haven't had any comments yet. I really appreciate the freedom from catching all kinds of colds and other viruses, aside from the original reason for masking.

Prayers for good healing
Wearing a mask indoors...folks might think the person isn't vaccinated because folks not vaccinated are told to wear a mask. I have felt a negative stare or two when I wore a mask indoors after the masks off announcement.

It's nice to hear things are opening up. Hardly anyone wears masks here anymore, but we still continue to wear ours when indoors in public. I've heard stories here too about people being harassed for wearing masks, it makes no sense at all!

I'm so sorry to hear about your fall. I'm sure glad it was no worse! I hope you heal up quickly. Be careful out there!

Glad Elsa didn't you with any damage. Have a great week Marie. :)

That's good that people have been compliant. Even though vaccinated since March, I intend to wear my mask in public for the near (or even far?) future. Those ebikes are heavy! I'm not sure how much the Rad mini weighs. I've fallen too, although not seriously. I mostly got scratches. Hope your ankle improves rapidly!

So sorry for your bike accident Marie and so glad your husband was there to take care of you. I hope it doesn't keep you from taking those wonderful pictures !!

Glad your tumble didn't result in any broken bones. Anti-maskers should worry about themselves and not bother those who wish to still wear them. My wife and I wear them when we go in to stores and no one has hassled us. People just expect others to do what they want. Crazy!

I like the removal of mask indoors mandate.

But!

All should be free, to do as they see fit!!!!

All coercion is against freedom. About mask wearing, and about young people getting the "Jab," when they are not at risk of dying from China Covid.

Same here, we are not past full "Jabs," and are still being careful. The way we have been careful.

Hope you do not have any more trouble from your fall. -sigh-

I am sorry about your fall - but very glad to read your Covid news. The State nearest to me is battling an outbreak. We watch and wait.
I am also glad that Elsa was gentle.

So sorry to read of your fall off the bike. Thankfully it sounds as if you are healing well. I find it interesting that once vaccinated fully, you don't have to wear a mask. Sadly this wouldn't work here. Too many unvaccinated woud have them off in a flash.
Wonderful that Canada is opening state borders. Alas, Oz who did so well initially, has messed up badly and the spread is on again and so many have become antivaccers. The visit to the Grandchidren seems to get further away!
After last year's dry summer glad to hear the farmer's and your garden looking good now.

Sorry about your fall. Hope you heal quickly. It seems that this pandemic is very devious . i know of people around here who have walked away from long standing friendships because of the difference of opinion . That is sad.

Our government has said it's no longer mandatory to wear a mask but it would be sensible if people did! You couldn't make it up. In reality I suspect that shops and public transport facilities will still insist on customers wearing masks to protect their own staff. That sounds like a nasty fall you had, last time I fell off I discovered that I'm much less bouncy than I was thirty years ago.

I had a spectacular crash with my bike in 2008. I did a summersault. I was okay but was pretty sore for a while.

Sorry about the fall but the pandemic news is much brighter than it has been. I hope it remains under control.

So sorry you fell. May you heal well and soon. I'm still wearing my mask to the grocery and medical offices. Our little county is the "hotspot" of Washington State, still very high risk and two of the Covid variants have just appeard here. On the upside with all the masking almost no one here came down with the flu this year.

Hello,
I am sorry to hear about your fall. I hope you are feeling better!
I wish people were just nice, why do they worry so much what others are doing.
My hubby is back to wearing his mask in public areas, even after being fully vaccinated.
Take care, enjoy your day and week ahead!

So sorry to hear about your fall Marie, thankfully not too badly hurt but it would have given you bit of a shock. We too are a few weeks away from second shot. My son and family live in Sydney and they are in a bit of a mess at the moment. Australia has dealt with the virus really well with less than one thousand deaths total, but we are behind on the vaccination side, hopefully think things will speed up now.

Ouch! Hopefully the healing process goes smoothly.

I intend to be masked for some time to come.

Hope you are healing well. Better stay on well maintained trails from now on.
I sometimes struggle to understand others. The pettiness displayed by some during the pandemic is hard to grasp...

such a relief to loose any old friend dear Marie ,old friends are few and always occupy deeper corner of the heart .

masks are necessary indoors here either and never heard of such thing that other object about people who wear mask ,sounds weird.

i am happy your plantation is doing great :)
so true that it will take quite time to recover from the damage pandemic has caused to the world .
thank goodness your area has opened for visitors .
stay well and be healthy my friend!

I hoe your ankle is doing better, and I'm glad you weren't seriously hurt when you fell.

They've ended the mask mandate for fully vaccinated adults here, too, but there are exceptions, like doctor's offices. Unvaccinated people are still encouraged to wear masks. The mask thing has been ugly here the whole time and continues to be. we're both fully vaccinated, but are still wearing a mask in places like grocery stores, where people may not have a choice about going.
