If it’s not one thing…

It has been a rough few weeks. Two weeks ago, we were living with news of the approaching Fiona, her exact landfall in Atlantic Canada unknown. As the week progressed, every weather update had us more anxious, but we prepared as east coasters do. When the storm hit, it was our worst weather experience ever.

Summerside has its own electric utility so we had power before much of the island including our family. Our grandchildren didn’t have school so we had them over for a cooked dinner. Little did we know they were brewing Covid and contagious which we found out two days later. The following day, we had symptoms. We had avoided Covid to this point.

While neither of us had life threatening symptoms with Covid, we had the equivalent of the flu with no energy. My symptoms were worse than my husband’s though we’d both had two vaccinations and two boosters. My main concern was that the symptoms would continue for weeks like they do when I have a cold or flu. While I always have allergies, I haven’t had a cold/flu for a few years thanks to masking. Now we are both taking Paxlovid.

So the stress level has been extreme for a few weeks and we will be thankful to return to normal. Meanwhile, there are islanders who are without power still and it will be into next week before some are connected to the grid, more than two weeks post Fiona.

When we compare what we experienced to the people of Pakistan with flooding and people of Florida with hurricane Ian, we know we were fortunate with Fiona. When will others return to normal? Flooding and drought have affected the world food supply, as has the war in Ukraine.

We can do our small part to help others during the catastrophes they face by contributing financial aid, but the larger problems must be addressed. What do we do about those? And though we want to return to our comfort zone, we shouldn’t be satisfied with a return to the status quo. That’s what brought us here. How will society at large harness the resources, knowledge and skills to tackle the problems? It is easy to despair but where does that lead us?

P.S.

On a brighter note, younger members of our family recovered quickly from Covid, although the adults took longer than the children.

I mentioned previously how the birds were missing the day after the storm. They returned to the area the next day however. It was good to see them again. We haven’t been to the boardwalk as it is still under repair and we have been sidelined anyway. We hope to feel better and able to walk there again soon.

And finally, I have been reading your blogs but unable to summon the energy to comment this week. I always enjoy your blog posts which are an interesting part of my day. Many times the events of your lives in various parts of the world become part of the conversation between my husband and me. Blogging means I am interested in anything that happens in your part of the world which could affect you. It makes the world smaller! We may be isolated at home but not really! Blogging helped me through the long isolation of the pandemic! Thank you, blogging friends and Blogger.

Sorry to hear about your continuing problems. Let's hope you'll be better soon. I agree with you on the blessing of blogging especially now.

Nearer home I'm doing my part to help the current situation by being frugal with water and power and gasoline. Everyone who makes fewer demands on the grid and the supplies of the earth helps, even if only fractionally.

So sorry to hear you got Covid, but are on the mend. And happy to hear that the birds returned once again to your beautiful area. :-)

Covid symptoms seem to vary from person to person. It's amazing you have been able to avoid it for so long. I hope it passes soon. I needed to take some electrolytes after recovering to get my energy back. All my best for a speedy recovery for you, your husband, and the grandkids.

Oh my, troubles compounded! I'm glad you had your power restored quickly. On the news last night they featured some people who are still without, in Cape Breton, I believe. And then Covid! The lack of energy is what our kids suffered with, too, for several weeks after the other symptoms disappeared. I wish you a steady and complete recovery.

It seems as though you have escaped the worst of both Fiona and COVID, thank goodness. I feel for those still without power. At least it isn’t winter, but I know that it is tough.

Glad you and your grandkids are feeling better!

Best wishes with getting free of covid. And things getting back to normal.

As to allllll "the news,".... i have so much to do now, that i can not worry about it. The world will have to carry on, while i carry on here.

Thank you for this thoughtful post - which echoes so many of my thoughts. I am so very grateful for the blogosphere which simultaneously shrinks the world and expands mine. And my heart goes out to so many people enduring calamatious times.

There are so many disasters and so much suffering happening in the world at the moment, that sometimes one wonders where it is all going to end.
I was sorry to hear that you and all the family have had covid but glad you are recovering. One by one we all seem to be experiencing it, which I suppose is to be expected.
Look after yourself and hubby and get well soon. Hugz, Mxx

It is good to hear from your. I enjoyed your allusion to my mother's favorite hymn, will the circle be unbroken. I think bloggers are fulfilling that job of closing the circle.

While this weather was overshadowed by our own, I am so sorry for your challenge. WE also had COVOD but they do not give out Paxovid unless you are very ill here or have illnesses that can make you weaker. We are now well and glad that Ian did not do ay damge.

Sending hugs and wishes for complete recovery. Congrats on weathering such a stinker of a storm.

COVID, is wicked. I had it last Dec. and it was the third variant but it was not the worst it could be. I know so many that had it really rough. Hoping you are all doing a lot better really soon.

precious Marie sorry for being late ,heartfelt sorry for all the troubles you went through recently ,seems like life is testing us all everywhere and equally .

your mentioning symptoms of covid makes me think if i am having this too and since more than a month probably .we cannot go for covid check up as they can restrain us and worry about house and my youngest son will keep us troubling .we could not find the device here which help us to check at home . we both are better quite better but flu has not disappeared completely until now which is worrying little .coughing is another issue which is not left totally .

this is peace to learn your grandchildren recovered instantly .hope and pray you both will be fine soon too .
unexpected long and heavy rains has caused damage more than ever here ,every house is under repair including ours.
wishing you health ,peace and joy in days ahead !

It seems like everything always happens at once. So sorry for what you've been going through. I hope you are feeling better soon. Sending hugs your way!

Oh drat, I'm sorry Covid found its way into your home. It seems that since the children have gone back to school the number of cases have increased significantly.
I try not to get into more sensitive on my blog, but like you I worry about the state of the world, and my small part of it. Sadly, it seems that we've divided along the lines of me and we. This was clearly demonstrated during the current pandemic. It's going to take a whole of "we" to work together to deal with serious issues. Will those who are all about "me" join in at some point or remain on the sidelines?
I hope you're able to get out for a walk on the boardwalk soon. Take care!

So sorry you caught the Covid but thankful you have recovered. The world has pretty much turned upside down it seems but I am grateful for Blogdom and the friends that I learn so much from.
Fiona was horrible as was Ian.
I feel the same way, that Blogging has gotten me through some very rough patches.

I'm so sorry to hear you've had Covid on top of everything else. I think all of us will get it sooner or later but that doesn't mean I take it lightly, and I'd say you felt the same. Take good care of yourself. And I agree about the blogosphere. I am so grateful for my blogging friends.

Hi Marie, I’ve been thinking about you and wondering how things turned out for you after Fiona showed up. When you said, “Blogging means I am interested in anything that happens in your part of the world which could affect you.” I thought … exactly! I feel the same way. I am so sorry to hear you came down with Covid after such a great fight to stay healthy for such a long time. Coincidentally, my wife came down with Covid a few weeks ago, catching it from someone at her work site. We got her on the Paxlovid quickly and she made it through without really bad symptoms. Somehow I’ve managed to stay away from Covid (knock on wood, as they say). I did get my 3rd booster a couple weeks ago. Getting back to Fiona … do you think there is anyone in PEI who still doesn’t believe climate change is happening? Thank you for updating us and do take good care. Best to you and yours from smoky Seattle. John

Good to hear the birds returned. I'd be curious to know where they rode the storm out. Glad the girls recovered quickly. I'm keeping my fingers crossed I don't catch it from the Grand Girls at Thanksgiving.

I hope you and your husband are all recovered by now.

You summed up exactly how I feel about blogging. I love seeing little snippets of my blogger friends' lives. I was actually just telling my husband about your before and after Fiona pictures while we were at the beach last week.
