The trails through the green

The trail welcomes you in and the golden grand-dog was eager to go. The leafy bloom of summer is well established and various shades of green urge us onward. We accept the invitation and head into the Rotary Trail.

It is easy to walk here with groomed trails through forest beside farmland. Trails off the main path are designed for mountain bikes. There is plenty of room for anyone who wants to bathe in the green.

Bird song fills the air. We stop periodically to listen and look for the singer but to no avail. The trees hide them well now, creating anonymity for those whose song we don’t recognize.

An unfamiliar song draws the eye upward and there it is in a dead tree, singing its heart out, visible. On this grey day, the sky provides little contrast but this Red-eyed Vireo allows a photo.

Each section of the trail draws us onward. Around every turn, the path through another green vista invites passage. My husband and I keep going, through a cave-like opening, where the canopy darkens the path except where a spotlight focuses the eye.

We pass a stand of pine which is showing off its new growth.

Within a huge stand of deciduous trees the canopy shades the forest floor which is covered green now too. Sarsaparilla and fern love this location.

The canopy and the green floor create a huge room which mosquitoes love as well. We walk through quickly having forgotten the bug spray.

In more open areas, false baby’s breath

has replaced the lupins of a few weeks ago.

We walked for an hour then left for home, refreshed in body and spirit.

To the beach

During our recent visit to Cavendish Grove, after a picnic, my husband and I walked to the beach. A trail from the Grove to the beach runs through the trees and takes you near the Lake of Shining Waters. From there it’s a short walk to the shore.

The trail passes through an area where the trees provide a canopy and shadows dance on the path.

In an open area of trail,

trees are in bloom as apple and chokecherry

display their spring beauty. Along this path, forget-me-nots appear through the woods,

providing a gentle hint of blue through the undergrowth. Where they line the path, their tiny blue and white flowers are easy to remember.

Bees are plentiful on the apple blossoms and on the last of the dandelions before they go to seed.

Before long the sand dunes and the floating walkway on the Lake of Shining Waters lie ahead.

From there it’s a short walk to the beach. Since we had the golden grand dog with us, we didn’t go on the beach because dogs aren’t permitted this time of year. We had a look though.

In this stage of the Covid opening, public bathrooms in the park are not open. I hope the next stage of opening rectifies this problem, otherwise park personnel will have a different concern.

We walked back to the car at the Grove and watched a Mallard and her ducklings for a few minutes before we left for home.

It was another great visit to one of our favourite places.

Two weeks

The third of our three visits to the Millman Road, a Heritage Road on Prince Edward Island happened this past Friday. The series of photos, taken May 22, May 29 and June 5, show how dramatically the setting changed in just two short weeks. This time of year sees incredible change on this island.

In those two weeks, trees went from a dormant-like stage,

 to unfolding leaves,

and are now open for business.

On our first visit, my husband and I were in awe of the walls of grey.

The grey had begun to disappear a week later.

At the end of two weeks, walls of green had replaced the grey. Tree trunks looked black more than grey, shaded by the canopy.

It is interesting that the sun was shining on the last day as well, a great welcome to the leafy reality of summer.

Walking down that road now, one walks in a green glow through a tunnel in many places.

The birds are singing or calling to one another but are invisible among the leaves. It is busy under the green canopy.

Watching nature express herself the last few weeks has been good for the spirit in these trying times.
