Bits and bobs 4

Three weeks after Dorian, the clean up around the island is ongoing. An enormous number of trees fell and familiar scenes now look strangely bare. Flooded basements, damaged roofs, fences, and siding are all in need of repair as well. Consequently, many people are working at the clean-up and repair and lots of firewood is available for this winter. You know what they say about an ill wind...

In some areas of the island, two meters, or over six feet, of coastline washed away during the storm. The rising seas and increasing storm strength will accelerate coastal erosion. Much more of our tiny sandstone island will disappear into the sea as erosion accelerates. It is a scary thought!

Oyster harvest has begun but the catch is less than half of last year. This follows a spring when ice damaged the oyster beds. One has to wonder about the future of all types of fishing because of the changing climate.

There is a graffiti artist at work around the city. This one marks light posts along the boardwalk and buildings around the city. One such artist was arrested in the last year but another has taken up the challenge. The city does a good job of cleaning up and provided a skate park for such artistry but pristine light posts, signs and walls provide a tempting canvas for this latest vandal. In time this person too will be caught.  Each new mark along the boardwalk makes me want that to be soon.

The grandkids are back at dance again this fall. My husband and I help our daughter with the pick up from school and delivery to class and home afterwards. When classes start in September, it feels like the next ten months will be endless but one month is gone already. With classes starting an hour after school, the playground, the ice cream or donut shops are the kids’ favourite places to pass the time. Their grandfather likes the food locations best!

Samaritan’s Purse has been active in Summerside since Dorian visited three weeks ago. It is an evangelical Christian aid group which provides physical assistance to people as part of their missionary work. This past weekend, they repaired our neighbour’s fence. Her brain injured daughter loves to run in the yard and the fence keeps her safe. My husband and I repaired the fence previously but the storm caused more damage than we could fix. Two people from Samaritan’s Purse, one of whom travelled from Nova Scotia, repaired the fence, cost free. Now the young woman is safe again and her mother doesn’t have to worry every time she goes outside.

There are good people in this world!

Hello,

It is sad to hear about the damage that Dorian did, the cleanup does take a long time. I hope they catch the graffiti artist, the vandals should be made to clean it up! I like hearing about people helping people. There are good people in the world. Enjoy your day, wishing you a happy new week!

I love to hear what's going on in your life, on your beautiful island. You do wonder about the future of the fishing industry as our seas are more and more depleted of fish and stuffed instead with plastic. That's so nice to learn about your neighbor's fence being repaired for free. :-)

Gosh Dorian did more damage than I realised Marie, thank heavens for the members of Samaritan's Purse, sounds like they are doing a marvelous job helping the community to recover. Such a pain about the tagger though, hope they catch whoever it is soon ✨

Sorry for all the damages. I hope that your community will recover from this event very soon.
My grandkids are back to school too and in these first days we are all busy for that.

There are lots of good people in the world but they don't get as much publicity as the bad 'uns.

That is a lot of coastline to have washed away!
Also nice to see Samaritan's Purse there to help!

I am so sorry about the storm damage, the depleted oyster catch and the tagger. A big hooray for Samaritan's Purse.

Good people and good dogs.

Good people outnumber the jerks so those responsible for the tagging will get caught eventually. Dorian created a big mess hopefully the cleanup will be done soon.

An interesting post, Marie. Dorian seemed to have taken a strange path. Our state of North Carolina was hit but it could have been so much worse. I'm sorry that it visited your area but heartened to hear of the goodness of people in your area. I'm so glad your little neighbor is safe. I seem to recall another of your posts when she gave everyone a scare.

It is so good to hear good words spoken about Samaritan's Purse. One wonders just how long it will take to get the clean up done...I hope sooner than later.

I do hope your graffiti artist gets a higher penalty than the last. Maybe if it kept escalating, the vandalism would deescalate.

It is refreshing to hear of works of love being done for others. I did not know that this organization also did work like this. I am aware of Mennonite Disaster Service which go into devastated areas and rebuild, as needed.

it is sad to know that storm effected the area quite badly dear Marie

increasing storms and weird changes in weather indicate the environmental crisis indeed and only goodness within men can restore it

wishing your grandchildren for their dance practice :)

i hope the mischievous artist will be caught soon and your area walls will be out of disturbing display of thoughts

best thing i found the group that help others and fix stuff cost freely

such gesture play very important role in this world and in people's life
this faith that there is humanity still exist bring hope and peace to all
glad you shared Marie
blessings!

Yes, there are good people, but I have no use for Trump-loving, Franklin Graham who runs the project.

hehehehehe, "grandfather likes the food locations best" - i am so with grandpa. i always tag along with the hubs if there is a good spot to eat!!

i know all about clean up after super store sandy. it took years here and i do believe some people are still not home. it has been 7 years and i often cry when i think about it. the ocean breached the bay, homes were floating in the water, homes burnt to the ground, it was horrific!! i hope it does not take that long for you!!

we were spared from dorian!!!

I don't blame your husband or the kids for preferring the food places. :-)

I've heard good things about Samaratin's Purse before. That's wonderful that they fixed your neighbor's fence. It's always nice to have things like that to help balance out things like the graffiti.

With all the ugliness in the world it is so wonderful to hear of good people helping others.
