A few apples

There’s been a flurry of baking and preserving here in recent days. One  fine day last week, my husband and I visited an orchard and picked 150 apples and I’ve been busy since then. Apple crisp, galette, baked apples and apple sauce have all passed our lips and onto our hips.

Applesauce is a favourite of the grandkids and I make some for them every year with a squeeze of lemon juice, a pinch of cinnamon and a tablespoon of sugar. I was late making it this year and needed a reminder from the kids. They reminded our daughter via Alexa to stop by Nanny’s house and get more applesauce a day after I delivered two bottles to their home. The girls left a timed message for her before they left for school.

The orchard we visit lost about 200 trees when Dorian blew through last month and the effect will be felt for many years. The owner had reported prior to the storm the crop was the best ever. Despite the loss of trees though, apples stayed on the trees that remained. The trees we picked from were loaded with luscious ripe fruit. We picked Cortland apples that day.

Walking through the rows of trees among the delicious fruit is one of my favourite autumn experiences.

I know how Eve felt.

Autumn Apples, how yummy, and it sounds like they have been keeping you occupied. Apple picking sounds so romantic (orchards here don't allow the public to pick their own).

Neat! I am glad they still had some good apples on the trees after the storm. Now I am craving some applesauce!!

Aren't those orchards just gorgeous. I have never made applesauce and since it is a little high on the natural sugar content I'd have to find a diabetic recipe if such is possible. I do love applesauce though. I tend to buy those little individual tubs for the girls and me so that I don't go hogwild. There are some sweet things in life that are really hard to resist. Marie, I started a new blog and hope you'll jump over and join me. Welcometosimple.blogspot.com B

Oh, those look yummy. I love Apple Crisp from Cortland. Is that what these trees are... theyremind me of Rome Apples. Also, of Arkansas Black but I would think too early for Arkansas Black.

there are so many varieties...so many I would love to try. Or even just see. Varieties I have heard mentioned in old books: Northern Spy, Limbertwigs, Lodi, and Gravenstein come to mind.

Look at those wonderful red balls against the sky. No nutmeg in the applesauce?

My mother used to have several friends who brought her bags of apples at this time of year. Guess who used to get to deal with them all? Nowadays I just buy a few Granny Smiths now and then to cook up with the blackberries I pick when out on walks.

150 apples???? OMG. That's a lot! But, yes, I totally know the thrill of this adventure at this time of the year. We took g'son Nicholas apple picking several years during his childhood (he's now 19). How can anyone forget those memories! However, we never picked that many apples...nor did we make all the goodies you did. We just ate the apples. HA!

Beautiful, there is nothing better than your own fruit, we also got a lot of apples this year from our parents garden ☺

I just read a book about a family in the 1920's who came to North Carolina to try their luck growing apples … a failure. They should have headed your way instead. What lovely pictures.

Ohh it's so yummy with a cup of decaf coffee! I am going to look back on your previous posts! I have been away and lost some of them! Wishing you a lovely Autumn!
