This is the story of two people in their late sixties determined to ride bikes again like they did when they were kids. Well, not anything like that but you get the idea.
This pandemic has inspired us and many others to buy bicycles. We tried our daughter’s bike and enjoyed the freedom of the open air along the way. We’d like to take our bikes to various areas of Prince Edward Island to ride the trails.
One of the blogs I enjoy, Debbie @ It’s all about purple, link below, has an ebike which she uses in and around New Jersey. She inspired me. My husband was eager to try the ebike too when he learned of it. Debbie
We ordered two Rad Power bikes, one of which arrived this week. Mine will arrive in September. These bikes are peddle assist with a battery which can help if you need it. We have health issues which will make the assistance valuable when required. Our younger selves could never have imagined such a bike. We had to try it.
Off we went at 7 a.m. to one of the local trails. It was going to be a hot day but the early morning breeze made the heat bearable at this early hour. I had our daughter’s bike again and my husband was on his new Rad. We were doing well until I had to go through a gate to the trail. Down I went on my left knee, as if in slow motion, onto a mass of tiny pebbles below. It was hard to rise with the bike on top of me. I had pebbles stuck in the broken flesh of my knee but no other injuries. I was able to continue on and even tried the new bike with and without the pedal assist.
Along the way, a man in a wheel chair wheeled himself along the trail while a friend walked beside him. That man was an athlete in every sense of the word. While we were stopped to clean my knee, a man with a prosthetic arm sped by on his bike. These men also inspired us.
We hope to ride in different areas of the island on the Confederation Trail, the Heritage Roads and in the National Park on the bike trails. Cycling is another dimension of physical activity and experience we hope to enjoy for as long as our health allows.
I feel like a kid again waiting for her new bike and so excited to ride. I hope my knees can take it though. I’ll keep you posted.

Ouch to your knee, but I think you'll be fine with the Rad. What fun to have such an adventure to look forward to! :-)
Yes, loose gravel is a hazard to bikes. I wiped out in loose gravel when I was a kid. I still have the big scar on my knee as a reminder.
Ouch! I hope your knee will be all better soon. Good for you to be getting out and riding again. The Rad sounds awesome. Get out and enjoy and have some fun, but be careful too. Have a great week!

Such a good story, and an inspiration. I was a big biking enthusiast in my teens and would love to get started again in my 80s! The motor assist sounds appealing, but I understand you need to be careful with it. Did you hear about Simon Cowell and his broken back? Not a good outcome...
Hope the knee is healing. My wife feel on the same knee many times but she keeps on going. :) Your an inspiration, go get em tiger! :)
Hope the knee soon heals. I used to cycle a lot and I still have two bikes, but after a really bad fall in Spain a couple of years ago, a trip to the hospital and stitches in my face and mouth I have totally gone off the idea!!
Stay safe on bike and from COVID, have a good week Diane
oh how very sweet marie, to know that i have inspired you!!! i have fallen many times and i just keep getting up and i keep going, i hope you are able to continue to do the same. please don't get discouraged, and i hope you will be ok. gravel is a big problem, if i see it coming, i stop and walk the bike over it!!
i LOVE my bike, i can't walk any distance so it is a great way for me to get around without having to walk!! plus, it is cooler when you ride as you get the breeze!!
i hope you recover ok from the fall, you must have a great spirit to keep going after falling!! i have done the same!! keep us posted on your progress!!
and how nice to read that you enjoy my blog!!!
I'm glad to read about your new adventure. Great idea. Gravel and wet leaves are a pitfall for bikes, but you're alerted now.
Hooray for new adventures - and new trails opening up.
That would have been it for me!! You are courageous.
I still have my bicycle. Hanging from the ceiling in the garage. It has been there for quite a while...
Please keep us posted. : )
Oh, I hope you have fun and not more falls...I wonder if I could still ride? I wish there was a place near for walking or for riding bikes. I do not feel safe riding bikes on streets...and have to walk in the street because sidewalks are so rough in places. It is a small town and everyone does, but I feel like I stick out like a sore thumb.
Looking forward to photos from the Ebike rides.
Your fall sounds nasty, but the biking with a partner sounds like fun.
So sorry to read of your fall. Sincerely hope it is the last. These E-bikes seem the best way to go for the 'Young at Heart'. My husband who has had to limit hiking because of ankle issues is looking at purchasing them. I look forward to following your new adventures on my my favourite island.
It sounds exciting. We have one of those dealerships in town. Actually, the bikes are for rent!
I biked until I turned 80. Now I want to find a recumbent trike. I miss the cycling.
Cycling is so much fun. I can't really do it anymore but sure enjoyed it when I could.
Sorry you took a spill - and on gravel, no less! We love to ride bikes when we are in WA for the summer - but not this year unfortunately. Too hot to ride here in Jeddah. I'm sure you can hardly wait to get your new bike!
You two are wonderful.
I think it's been at least ten years since I've been on a bike.
Good for you. I have wanted to try one of those assist bikes. In fact, I have entered a contest or two to try and win one. There is a lot of biking in my neighborhood and I long for that past memory of biking but my children tell me I'm too clumsy. Little monsters. But they are right. My balance doesn't seem to be as good as it was but you too are still very active and I'll bet you do great on it.
