Cow at Large

There is so much turmoil in the world today, it is easy to get overwhelmed when you watch the news. Millions of displaced people from war-torn countries take dangerous and uncertain journeys, searching for new homes for themselves and their children. Religious extremists shoot innocent people and then explode themselves. Bombings and drone strikes kill suspected terrorists and innocent victims.

Then there is Prince Edward Island. We have an hour of island/national/international news on a national broadcast station in the evenings. Filling that hour with enough local news can be a chore. With less than one hundred fifty thousand people, it is a quiet place. Sometimes there is little to report. On occasion there are reports about animals, such as cows which escape from the fields and may be roaming the roads. Such was the case when a headline read "Cow at Large in Cardigan."

We have traffic jams when farm equipment is on the move and cars cannot pass it on the highway. 

One may have to stay behind those vehicles for a few minutes before it is safe to pass.

High winds sometimes cause closure of the Confederation Bridge, which links our small island to mainland Canada. 

As well, in open areas of the province, drifting snow causes white-outs which can close schools and businesses for a number of days every year.

The top news story on the radio news one day was the name which two celebrities in the United States gave their baby. 

In this province, we have our share of problems, such as addictions and all the social problems which go along with them. There are serious crimes on occasion but those are rare. In fact, the crime rate has decreased in recent years.

Yes, I am happy to report, there is a cow at large on Prince Edward Island.
