For some people, the term 'a scoff and a scuff' will conjure up an image of ridicule or scorn followed by a physical altercation. Not if you are a Newfoundlander. Last night, New Year's Eve, was the perfect time for a scoff and a scuff.
A scoff often happens at night and involves an abundance of food, a big feed, shared with friends and family. A scuff is a dance; people have a few scuffs at a party.
There was a time when my husband and I ushered in the New Year with a scoff and a scuff. Those days are long gone now. We prefer a quiet night at home. Regardless of how you celebrated the arrival of 2016, we hope the year has some wonderful surprises in store for you. Who knows, maybe there's a scoff and a scuff in your future.

I was fast asleep when the new year began. I know when it was because my neighbors like to set off firecrackers. Once they stopped (finally), I drifted back to sleep. I also used to stay up and celebrate, but no longer. :-)
We had some scoff, well maybe not enough to call it scoff, but scuffing seems to be a thing of the past.
Good use of "some" as well. There's a bit of Newfoundlander in you I believe. Nothing like a few scuffs too.
A good night's rest would be a good reason to celebrate!
What a wonderful phrase! It's new to me. I wonder if "scoff" is related to the slang term "scarf" as in "to scarf down food." Anyway, HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Well, we had some nice scoff.... a sushi scoff!!! But not a lot of scuffing going on.

Hello Marie - thanks for popping in and commenting. The New Year sort of glided into our house very quietly while we were sleeping, we didn't hear a thing lol.
I have memories of being told 'not to scoff my food down' as a child. Scuffing is a new one but I suppose 'scuffing your shoes' is related in some way.
(BTW we visit Canada on a regular basis, especially N.S. Have travelled round Nfld by car on a couple of occassions (two weeks at a time) loved it also PEI)
