It has been bitterly cold with temperatures in the minus teens and windchills of minus thirties Celsius. It is a damp cold that feels as if it cuts to your bone, going through jackets, hats, mitts and pants as if you were naked. However, I couldn't resist a visit to see if the harbour was frozen. In the few minutes I was there, my hands felt close to frostbitten.
Last Friday, January 6th, I posted this picture of the harbour channel, taken the previous day.
As of Wednesday, January 11th, this is the harbour channel.
Meanwhile, the temperature has risen and will be near 5 degrees Celsius for several days. There may be open water again.
There is often a January thaw but this year, another freeze and thaw cycle is forecast. We live in curious weather times!

I have memories like this from long, long ago, Marie, because of growing up in Michigan. However, after 25 years in Atlanta and now 7+ years in the Netherlands (with temps nowadays similar to Atlanta, believe it or not), I just stare at images like this. We hover around 40F these past winters. However, today we awakened to a thin layer of snow and supposedly will have more in the days to come with night AND day temps below freezing. That's the way it's supposed to be the entire winter, right? Gotta kill all those bad bugs.
We're just coming out of the deep freeze ourselves for a few days of nice weather -- yay!
I wonder how the air can be so wet and cold, even in the house. I could not shake the chill yesterday, went to bed early and slept eight hours straight.
Your pictures knock me out with their coldness. I'm just grateful that today I feel warm...in layers, but not chilled.

I have found my salvation in Hot Hands. I open a package of them, two, and slip them into my pockets before I head out for exercise. They are wonderful and last for ten hours of heat. You can also slip them inside your mittens. Love your frozen picture, Marie. :-)
Again it is so surprising!!! Looks sooo cold. I admire you are brave the freezing.
However I think I would like to have an experience to see your frozen ocean someday. I promise I bundle up, wearing a warm hat and gloves to be with you! Thank you for sharing lovely and interesting photos!
Curious weather indeed. it was near 70 degrees f yesterday, but wee expect an ice storm later this weekend.
Beautiful but so terribly cold! There is one hope to cling to and that is Spring is around the corner.

My problem was I had to take my mitts off to take the photo. I have double fleece mitts that are usually fine. I'll have a look for the Hot Hands though.

Loved the pictures of the frozen ice! It has been bitterly cold here too, but thankfully we have no wind, so that makes it a bit more bearable. Hope your weather warming up a bit will not create any other issues like ice. Hugs to you today :)
