These are not power walks. On hikes through the Bonshaw Hills this month, my husband and I look up and stop often to take photos. However, the undergrowth deserves notice as well, particularly the ferns.
Sometimes, they are lush and green in spite of the date on the calendar.
In other areas, the yellow ferns are striking against the background of fallen leaves.
White ferns are rarer but they stand out on the forest floor.
Ferns which are finished teasing us with their colour, turn rusty in the end.
And if we are really lucky, we find a stand of ferns in various stages of autumn glory.
But once in a while, we have to just stop and catch our breath.

I have a love/hate relationship with ferns. Don't get me wrong; I don't hate/hate them, but....I love to look at them. But because of my mold allergy, I can't be around them much; I can't even own an indoors Boston fern. But they are SO pretty!

I love ferns when I'm walking on the forest trails. However..... I mistakenly planted just one fern in my small garden and it sent out numerous underground tendrils and started taking over the whole garden and choking the other plants. So it was bye bye fern. I'll just enjoy them in the wild.
Those autumn colours are so eye catching especially the fern coloured yellow. Sarah x

That looks like such a beautiful place. I miss forests like that. I remember learning to identify certain ferns because there were so many in places I visited like this.

Pretty! I have always liked ferns, they seems almost prehistoric for some reason.
