Fern Hills

These are not power walks. On hikes through the Bonshaw Hills this month, my husband and I look up and stop often to take photos. However, the undergrowth deserves notice as well, particularly the ferns.

Sometimes, they are lush and green in spite of the date on the calendar.

In other areas, the yellow ferns are striking against the background of fallen leaves.

White ferns are rarer but they stand out on the forest floor.

Ferns which are finished teasing us with their colour, turn rusty in the end.

And if we are really lucky, we find a stand of ferns in various stages of autumn glory.

But once in a while, we have to just stop and catch our breath.

Just beautiful! We have so many ferns here, that I tend to take them for granted. Your pictures are stunning! I'll be taking a fresh look at ours on our next hike. Thanks for the great pictures. :-)

It looks like a delightful place to take walks Marie! These ferns are so beautiful, I bet they would look fantastic in a vase. Thank you for sharing the beauty of nature you have around your place. Have a great week!

I have a love/hate relationship with ferns. Don't get me wrong; I don't hate/hate them, but....I love to look at them. But because of my mold allergy, I can't be around them much; I can't even own an indoors Boston fern. But they are SO pretty!

A nice walk and nice photos. I like ferns and you're right they can look different at different times. I love when the light hits them just right. They are pretty and have nice patterns. Thanks for sharing your walk, I enjoyed it.

I love ferns when I'm walking on the forest trails. However..... I mistakenly planted just one fern in my small garden and it sent out numerous underground tendrils and started taking over the whole garden and choking the other plants. So it was bye bye fern. I'll just enjoy them in the wild.

That looks like such a beautiful place. I miss forests like that. I remember learning to identify certain ferns because there were so many in places I visited like this.

It is beautiful throughout the maritimes, Catarina.

I know some names of ferns but not many, Ratty. I would miss forests too.

Pretty! I have always liked ferns, they seems almost prehistoric for some reason.

We enjoy a variety of ferns in the woods around our home. You have captured the beauty so well.

I so agree, Jenn. They are sort of primitive somehow.
