Notes from the isle

We’d prepped the garden for planting and this past week, on the hottest day in Summerside in 100 years, I planted the vegetables. Two days later we had a frost warning. Such is spring on the east coast of Canada. Further east, in Newfoundland, it snowed.

Our grandchildren have another year of school almost completed. This year they lost three days due to the pandemic after losing three months of in-school instruction last year. The girls were excited to be back in class for this year and fortunately they could finish there. Two weeks left.

Both girls completed another year of dance as well, masks and all. Both continue to enjoy the classes and probably will take an extra class each next year. I help out by collecting them after class, allowing their mother to maintain the home front. The girls and I enjoy the alone time we get on the drive home.

Our eldest granddaughter won an award for her passion, grace and love of dance which included a $500.00 bursary. She really lives to dance and her interest continues to grow.

We continue cycling at every opportunity, squeezing in a ride among gardening, spring cleaning and regular life activities. We ride to the boardwalk and neighbouring communities on days we don’t walk the boardwalk, beach or other trails. We are at the eastern leg of our Confederation Trail trek for this year and each section of the trail we complete now requires we drive at least an hour to the trail. We will do a section every week to complete the trek over this summer. One recent ride of 56 kilometres tested our physical limits and was a good test of our bikes as well.

Finally, my husband and I have our appointments for second vaccinations within the next month. With 67% of the island with one shot, the hope is to have 80% coverage by the end of June. The plan is by late June, travel in Atlantic Canada will be open again and to the rest of Canada by September, though that may change to earlier like the other Maritime provinces plan to do. This will not be a normal summer which will devastate tourism for a second year.

There is an end in sight, right?

A good factual update. We will get closer to normal as summer progresses. Hopefully, we'll all be there by September. The Delta variant is very worrisome, however.

Hello,

Congrats to your grandchildren, the dancing award is very nice. It will be nice to see an end to this pandemic, I wish more people would get the vaccine. Hubby and I both have our two shots. Enjoy your bike rides, it sounds like will complete your goal on the trail. Have a happy day and week ahead.

I had my second shot 10 days ago. My first shot was AstraZeneca and my second was Pfizer. A few minor side effects from Pfizer but nothing too severe. I'll be so glad with this is finally over! Or even over-ish. My Rare One and I have a reservation to go eat inside a restaurant with friends for the first time since March 2020. We're going for our favourite fish 'n chips in a little place run by Maritimers!

Garden work on a hot day!! Ohhhh mercy! -smile-

Did you have much reaction, to your first shot?

We are due, today and tomorrow. Then we will stay extra careful, for 3 weeks, till second shot. We are old. I have read that the first shot depresses our natural immunity, which in old people, is already depressed from age. So.... We be even more careful, than we have been.

Which would have to mean, we zip ourselves in a plastic bubble and do not come out for 3 weeks. LOLLLLL Because we live a home centered life, at all times.

Gentle hugs...

It really is astounding that the weather can change so dramatically almost from day to day, I think it's happening everywhere Marie. Sounds like your granddaughters are loving and doing so well in their dancing, all my nieces and now great niece are very much into dancing also. Yes first injection done here also, second at end of July and then hopefully over to Sydney to see the grandchildren. Looking very much forward to enjoying those rides with you 💜

It's great that the girls have such enthusiasm for their dancing; there seems to be so many activities available to young people these days. Whether or not the end is in sight depends very much on any new variants which may appear. Latest figures in the UK show that 79% have had their first jab and 57% have had both doses.

Hopefully your garden will be a success. Shari got her second jab and I'm still waiting, hopefully it will be very soon. Snowing in Newfoundland, that's incredible.

You have been busy. Gardening on the hottest day? I would have piked. And couldn't ride those distances. I applaud you on both counts and hope that a tiny semblance of normality IS returning. For the world.

After having worked so hard to find the vaccine in the beginning of our state's efforts, now we have an abundance. We are both fully vaccinated and I hardly remember any side effects (although I do remember I had a few). Glad to hear you're heading towards being fully vaccinated! Your bike rides always make me smile.

Yes there is an end in sight... at a distance but we will get there! I've had both jabs, and my family have all had one, with appointments for the second. But still no school here until September. My garden is thriving.... runner beans are 6' high already!

Congrats to your grandchildren and especially to the eldest! I'm so glad to hear you now have appointments for your second vaccines. It's such a relief afterward to feel safer and more protected.

my youngest son, he is a pharmacist, and i talk about this often. he says it is not over and he worries about the variants!! he is so smart, and i really value his opinion.

i'm glad you got your garden planted, too bad it was so hot. i don't really spring clean, i more winter clean, when i am forced to be inside!!

my great nieces cheer and they love it. it's nice to see them active and not always in front of a computer!!

I feel so much better with my two shots under my belt. I know I could probably still get it and there are variants but I feel like I've done all I could for now.

So was the garden seeded in June? Here we seed about may 21. I think the kids have had a tough time this year. I'm not worried about them. They will catch up. The kids who will lose are those who were at home without adult supervision.

It does feel like there's an end in sight. I hope so. I hope there's not another lockdown. I can't take much more of it.

Congratulations to your granddaughter! How wonderful that you get to spend such nice quality time with them. We have plans to travel in about a month. I haven't seen my granddaughter in just under two years now because of the pandemic. Thanks goodness for modern technology - being able to video chat frequently is almost as good as being there in person.

The augury for travel does seem favourable and I have my fingers and toes crossed, but having been in and out of lockdown in Ontario three times it's hard not to be at least a little skeptical!

Here there is a slight uptick as open to all today.

Planting sounds tricky! Here the general rule of thumb is not before the middle of May (Mother's Day). Sometimes I cheat, and sometimes I pay for it! I think there is a definite light at the end of the tunnel for those of us vaccinated.
