Garden salad

Every year I change some of the vegetables I grow in the back yard. This year, the crop includes more salad greens

and kale than past years.

I have begun to harvest some of the greens. With a dressing of olive oil and flavoured vinegar, we have tasty salad five minutes after harvest.

I enjoy vegetable gardening. While flower beds are lovely, they don't have the same appeal for me as growing some of my own food. Knowing what's in and on the food is important. Saving money on groceries this time of year is important too. However, one of the best things about the backyard garden, is the benefit to the environment which comes when food is grown ten feet from the door and chemical free. I feel good about this food, it is tasty and healthy, too.

Pennies provide enough salad mix for family and friends for the summer. Salad anyone?

Good Morning, Your salad greens and kale look lovely. We are eating a lot of salads during these hot/muggy days. I wish you a very nice day.

Wow, You have many fresh salad greens! Nothing is more delicious than fresh vegetables you grow on your yard! I really like vegetables with olive oil. Long time ago I tried to do garden vegetables, but I had to give up with worms eating young leaves. I thank to my friend who grow vegetables. Occasionally, she gives me her vegetables and I am so happy with her fresh tomatoes, gumbos and onions! Hope you have a good day.

I have already harvested some of that Russian kale myself. I love growing my own veggies, too. I've planted three tomato plants and look forward to the best of the best when it comes to tomatoes. :-)

Salad tastes better when you grow it yourself, doesn't it!

Looks amazing Marie. I would love to grow veggies but we seem to have so many bugs here to fight. Do you have problems with snails etc? How do you sort it without using chemicals? I am going to try to grow tomatoes after winter, it's really hard to find flavoursome tomatoes here.

Lovely, so fresh and tasty looking. Never will see anything like this in a store. :-)

Salad greens fresh from the dirt are the best. I miss them.

Yum.
I like both flowers and vegetables (and those flowers which can double as both). And isn't the taste of home-grown produce just WONDERFUL. Tomatoes particularly.

Salad greens are so tasty and healthy. We have a little area up at our community garden. I do love fresh tomatoes, their taste is so good.
Enjoy your salads and have a wonderful weekend, Marie.

Salads are a great option this time of year! Have a great weekend Mildred.

The greens are wonderful, Tomoko. The raised bed helps prevent slugs from eating the tender leaves.

Marie Smith said...

I hope your garden will recover soon, Debbie. There is still time to grow great food.

Marie Smith said...

I have just planted eight tomato plants, Jan. But that's another story.

Marie Smith said...

It sure does, Debra.

Marie Smith said...

It is great, SW.

I have a raised bed, PDP. It eliminateslugs. I also use tea leaves and coffee grounds at the base of the plants. These discourage slugsas do broken egg shells.

I fortify the soil every year with composted sheep manure and seaweed. No other fertilizer is necessary. Egg shells at the bottom of the hole when you plant tomato plants, prevent some of the common tomato problems.

Good luck!

How true, Celia. There have been so many recalls on the bags of greens in the last few years, I don't like to buy those in the stores.

Marie Smith said...

Wish I could share some with you, Joanne.

Chive flowers are great in salads. Mine are just budding now, EC. Tomatoes will be a while yet though.

Community gardens are great, Bill. Lots of residents use the ones here.

Really?? Good!!

This looks like a beautiful garden. I can't get mine to look good at all because of weeds and rabbits.

Marie Smith said...

Rabbits would be a huge problem but they haven't found me yet. I work at the weeds all the time.

What glorious stuff. One year at the beach house, I surrounded each rosebush bed with a row of lettuces. Never has a salad tasted better....just like yours.

Marie Smith said...

I know, Mage. We just had salad for lunch. The stuff at the grocery stores bares no resemblance to these greens.

Angela said...

Ohh it looks so beautiful and green!! I usually don't plant lettuce but I should. It's very healthy to eat lots of greens so you are doing the correct thing.

Ginnie said...

You are so right Marie. Nothing much better than fresh greens direct from your own back yard ! Yum ...

So true, Amalia. Thanks for visiting.

Good for you. I'm just a flower guy, however.

I would love to be able to grow my own food, but sadly not able to now that I have sold my big house.

our vegetable garden looks very similar although I don't often feature it in any of my posts. We had our first 2 raspberries today the taste was so much better than anything you can buy. Sarah x

Marie Smith said...

it is satisfying to grow some of your own food, isn't itl, Shammickite?

Marie Smith said...

Home grown is delicious, Sarah, that's for sure.

I didn't realize you had a garden. It's very nice and organized. Picture perfect. I keep threatening to get one of those garden tables on legs so I wouldn't have to bend over but there is just so little sun in my backyard.

Marie Smith said...

The shade is a problem for sure, Barbara.

The garden plot I have is at a perfect height which helps my poor back.

Your lettuce patch is looking very good. We're planning a tiny veggie bed for our new house.

Marie Smith said...

The raised bed is ideal, FG.
